2023.03.26 01:22 Issun_TWA 25 [M4F] [Relationship] Ohio / Us - Oh look you dropped something... It's just your standards

Hi there! I have been told I am the poster child for the INTP personality. I'm a huge nerd and I'm filled with social awkwardness. I'm looking for another person with similar interests to hopefully get to know and spend time with! Bear with me because I am awful at intros like these.
Overall I'm very carefree and you can usually find me playing games on pc after work. I play a lot of different games, and I'm always looking for new things too! I have been wanting to play an MMO but have someone to play with!
I like watching shows curled up on the couch too. Bojack Horseman, Arrested Development, Community are some of my favorite shows. I also watch anime too! Some of my favorites are Jujutsu Kaisen, Hunter x Hunter, and Stein's;Gate.
I'm working a 9 - 5 Monday to Friday in a software / IT related job currently. I'm also a big foodie and love to cook and try new restaurants. I'm currently living with family while I am saving up to buy a house at some point. I would love to have 2 dogs one day. I love animals in general but I love the companionship of a dog.
Physically I am white with brown hair, eyes, and a beard. Also I am short (5"4') so sorry if that is a dealbreaker! I didn't really stand a chance with my genetics on that one. Currently working on losing weight as well!
Hopefully that wasn't too bad of a read. If any part of this post catches your eye send a message with an intro about yourself! I also ask that you put at least a little bit of effort into engaging in the conversation. I'm way too awkward to keep it going one sided! I'd love to talk and get to know someone before working up to talking on a call and playing or watching something together!

2023.03.26 01:13 ChardNo6398 The Abandoned House in the Woods

I remember the day vividly. It was a beautiful summer evening, the kind that makes you want to sit outside and watch the sunset. I was staying with my friend, Kate, at her family's cabin in the woods. It was a remote location, surrounded by tall trees and thick bushes. As we sat on the porch, sipping iced tea and chatting, I had no idea what horrors were about to unfold.
We decided to take a walk through the woods, as we often did in the evenings. It was quiet, except for the sound of the leaves rustling beneath our feet. The sun had almost set, and the shadows were growing longer. We walked for what felt like hours until we stumbled upon an old abandoned house. It was hidden behind a thick patch of bushes, and I could barely make out its silhouette through the leaves.
The house was old, and it looked like it hadn't been lived in for years. Its roof was caved in, and the windows were boarded up. Kate, being the adventurous type, was eager to explore it. I, on the other hand, was hesitant, but I followed her anyway.
As we entered the house, we were met with a musty smell that made me cough. The walls were covered in a thick layer of dust, and cobwebs hung from the ceiling. It was dark, except for the beams of sunlight that streamed in through the holes in the roof. We walked through the old living room, and Kate noticed a staircase that led to the upper floor. She insisted we go up there, but I didn't want to. Something felt off about the house, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
Reluctantly, I followed her up the stairs. As we climbed the creaky old steps, the feeling of unease intensified. We finally reached the top floor, and I noticed that there was only one room. The door was partially open, and I could see a faint light coming from inside. Kate pushed the door open, and we stepped inside.
It was then that I saw her. A woman, sitting in a rocking chair by the window, looking out at the woods. She didn't acknowledge us, and I couldn't see her face clearly, but I could tell she was old. Kate walked towards her, but I grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
"Something's not right here," I whispered, feeling my heart racing in my chest.
Just then, the woman turned around, and I gasped. Her face was twisted in anger, her eyes cold and unfeeling. I could feel the fear rising in me as she stood up, staring directly at us. Kate didn't seem to notice anything was wrong, and she walked towards her, her hand outstretched. But as soon as she got close, the woman lunged at her, revealing a long sharp knife hidden behind her back.
Kate screamed as the woman plunged the knife into her chest, and I was frozen in fear. I watched in horror as Kate fell to the ground, bleeding profusely. I tried to run, but the woman blocked the door, trapping me inside. She advanced towards me, the knife glinting in the dim light.
I was sure I was going to die, but then I woke up. It was all just a nightmare, or so I thought. I looked around, and I saw the same abandoned house outside my window. The same woman sitting in the rocking chair by the window. And Kate, lying next to me, her chest covered in blood.
I don't know what happened that night, whether it was real or just a dream. But one thing is for sure, I'll never forget the terror that I felt that day. And I'll never forget the feeling of waking up to the same scene that had haunted me in my nightmares. It was like my mind had been projecting my fears into reality, or maybe I had stumbled upon something in those woods that I was not supposed to see.
I quickly called for help, but it was too late for Kate. The authorities came and investigated the area, but they never found any evidence of the woman or the abandoned house. It was as if they had vanished into thin air. The incident haunted me for a long time, and I struggled to come to terms with what had happened.
Years went by, and I tried to forget about the incident, but it always lingered in the back of my mind. It wasn't until one day, when I was browsing through old photos, that I found a picture of Kate and me in front of the abandoned house. I couldn't believe my eyes as I looked at the picture. The same woman was sitting in the rocking chair, looking out at the woods. It wasn't just a nightmare. It had really happened.
That realization left me with a sense of unease that I couldn't shake off. How had we missed seeing her in the picture? Was it a coincidence or something more sinister? It was a mystery that would never be solved.
Since that day, I've never gone back to those woods, and I've warned anyone who would listen to stay away from that area. The incident changed me in ways I couldn't even explain. I don't know what the future holds, but I know one thing for sure. Some mysteries are better left unsolved, and some places are better left unexplored.

2023.03.26 00:46 Weller3920 Maggie's second husband

When rewatching "Haunted Houses" I finally picked up on the detective addressing Maggie as Mrs. Sawyer. I was hoping the doctor who came to her assistance when Marty went to the hospital would turn out to be Dr. Sawyer, but IMDb lists him just as "doctor." Did the show provide some other clues to the 2nd husband's identity?

2023.03.26 00:17 Nik-Yura Lord Byron, "New Bushido" and Sacred Blessing

Lord Byron,
...we are in a fiery hell,
Our way from hell to hell,
And halos don't bloom
Above the helmets of soldiers…
On the best of the planets
We pray to the moon,
There is no sun in the sky,
We are brothers in war… [1]

"When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then a gentleman?"
"...the whole people should be freed from the yoke of the present serfdom, and no man should serve another, except by good will and mutual consent; ...everyone is given the right to freely buy, sell and trade in any part of England; ...all participants in the uprising are granted a full Amnesty for any actions they may have committed in the course of the uprising... and they should not be subjected to any kind of persecution."
Wat Tyler's Rebellion

"Rustics you were and rustics you are still. You will remain in bondage, not as before, but incomparably harsher."
"Insignificant people, rejected both by sea and land, you, who think yourself equal to the masters, are not worthy to live... From now on, your servile dependence will be incomparably more severe. For as long as we live and by God's grace rule this land, we will spare no mind, strength, or health to make the horror of your servile condition an example for posterity."
The mercies of Richard II

"You call these men a mob... Are we aware of our obligations to a mob! It is the mob that labour in your fields, and serve in your houses — that man your navy, and recruit your army — that have enabled you to defy all the world, — and can also defy you, when neglect and calamity have driven them to despair. You may call the people a mob, but do not forget that a mob too often speaks the sentiments of the people."
Lord Gordon Byron, speech in Parliament in defense of the "rabble"

Colonel Vasin has come to the frontline
And brought his young wife along
Colonel Vasin has rallied his corps
And told them: "Let's go home"
We fought this war for seventy years
We were taught that life is a fight
But the intelligence has just reported
We fought ourselves all this time.
https://reddit.com/link/1222x31/video/pgpp6m7uoypa1/player
And I have seen generals
They drink and eat our death
Their children are going crazy
Cause there's nothing left that they don't have
And our land lies in rust
Our churches are burnt.
If we want to have a home to return to
Now is the time to return
Our train is on fire, there are no buttons to push
Our train is on fire, there is no place to run to
Long ago this land was ours before we got trapped in this war
And it will die if it is nobody's, it's time for it to be returned
And the torches are burning around us
It's the rallying of all perished troops
And people who shot our fathers
Are now making plans for our youths.
We were born by the sound of marches
We were threatened by jail
I say it's about time we stopped crawling.
We have returned to our land. [2]

"The day of the armored man-at-arms, the knight, the embodiment of chivalry, was over—hammered into history’s coffin by a few thousand ragtag peasant archers carrying longbows. The ultimate insult to the noble-born French dead—if the dead indeed could be further insulted—lay in the fact that the English archers were not only common men, common in the lowest, most flea-infested sense of the word, but that they were draftees. Doughboys. GIs. Grunts. AIPs. Spezzes. K-techs. Jump Rats.
All that was in the lesson Kassad was supposed to have learned during that OCS:HTN exercise."
Dan Simmons, "Hyperion Cantos"

"Watching metal monsters make their way through helpless fields and sow death from the astonished skies, we decided that without such armor, human courage is an unreliable weapon in the battle of machines. However, as the confrontation drags on, it becomes obvious that people can endure and suffer more than armored vehicles and airplanes. From the clash of steel eagles and giants, a figure of a man appears — still more robust and adapted than the instruments of destruction created by him. It's amazing to see him toughen up under fire."
"The New York Times", Anne O'hare McCormick: "The Battle on the Hills Before Stalingrad", September 7, 1942

Great video:

Do you think they remember? THEY REMEMBER!

Use English subtitles.
But the most interesting thing about this is hidden at the crypto level - that is, "between the lines". And this is done not verbally, but visually. The words that they REMEMBER, the hope and faith contained in them are confirmed by the most obvious fact: a prosperous peaceful city.
And this is the main point of this short video: we live well only because we REMEMBER.

"Review, friends - troops long past review,
All to fate a weight of pains and dollars.
Their spirits wear our silver collars.
Review, friends - troops long past review:
Each a dot of time without pretense or guile.
With them passes the lure of fortune.
Review, friends - troops long past review.
When our time ends on its rictus smile,
We'll pass the lure of fortune.

We cannot move forward without the past. We carry it with us, not as baggage but as a sacred blessing."
Frank Herbert, "Dune"

2023.03.26 00:00 lavbook Brooke was a better friend than Peyton

Someone debate me on this (potential spoilers ahead)
I’m currently doing a rewatch of the show and stalking this sub to relive everything. And while a lot of people love Brooke, I must say, I’ve been surprised by the amount of posts talking about what a terrible friend Brooke is.
From what I’ve seen, Brooke puts the most amount of effort into her friendships when compared with Peyton and Haley. Yes, she’s done some terrible things as well (like making fun of Peyton’s mom’s death), but Brooke is a very extreme person - her high’s are HIGH and her lows are LOW. And in my opinion, Peyton has gone pretty low as well like punching Brooke in the face and giving her a black eye, tackling her to the floor, telling her “you’re dead to me”, etc. However, Peyton has never done anything as thoughtful for Brooke as Brooke has done for her, which makes me see Brooke as the overall better friend. Some examples:
These were just off the top of my head, I’m sure there’s more. And I really can’t think of any of Brooke’s friends doing anything as major to show their love for her. It was always her doing all these grand gestures for other people without anything in return.
So Brooke slept with Nathan when he and Peyton were broken up. This isn’t a huge deal to me since Nathan and Peyton’s relationship was extremely toxic and it was obvious that it wouldn’t last. They clearly didn’t love each other. What Brooke did was still very fucked up, but Peyton had an ongoing affair with Lucas while KNOWING that Brooke was in LOVE with him. That’s far worse in my opinion.
People on this sub also love to say that Brooke stole Lucas from Peyton in season 1 because she went after him, even knowing that Peyton had feeling for him. I call BS on this. Brooke was the very first person who showed interest in Lucas by calling him hot, telling Peyton MULTIPLE times that she wanted him. Sure, Brooke may have been aware that Peyton liked him too because of all the longing looks between her and Lucas, but that was IT. There was no other indication that Peyton liked him. Brooke practically came out and said “I really like Lucas, so if you like him too, please tell me and I’ll back off.” But Peyton didn’t say a word so that’s when Brooke tried pushing her towards Nathan again.
People still say, “well Brooke was aware that Peyton and Lucas had something so she should have backed off”. But you could say the same for Peyton! They both really liked him so why should Brooke be the only one to back off if Peyton wasn’t going to do anything about it? Why shouldn’t Peyton have been the one to back off and let Brooke have him? It’s a murky situation for sure, but I can’t really say Brooke was in the wrong here because she really liked Lucas too. Why should she sacrifice her happiness if Peyton kept saying that she didn’t like him?
And after Peyton was assaulted the second time by fake Derrick, Brooke spent every night with her and did what she could to make her feel comfortable at home. But after Brooke was assaulted in S6, Peyton moved out the very next day because she wanted to go be happy with Lucas.
The only time Peyton has ever really done nice grand gestures for Brooke is when she’s trying to get into her good graces again right after she cheated with Lucas (like helping her win the cheerleading contest and signing over her artwork for Clothes over Bros). So these don’t really count for much.
And don’t even get me started by saying that Peyton was just trying to be honest by telling Brooke that she had feelings for Luke the second time. Peyton had already kissed Luke and told him she loved him by this point, yet Peyton neglected to mention it. Where was the honesty then??
In conclusion, the one and only really terrible thing Brooke did to Peyton is making fun of her mom’s death. I am not by any means making light of this or trying to excuse it. However, Brooke also went above and beyond in the other facets of their friendship, and she put more effort in than Peyton. Additionally, Peyton went almost as low as Brooke in other ways.
I’m not saying Peyton was a terrible friend by any means. I actually like Peyton too. But if we’re comparing who was the better friend, I think it’s Brooke hands down. Thoughts?

2023.03.25 23:56 DistrictCrafty4990 Court etiquette and parks

Wanted to get opinions on something. I was playing at a different court today than usual and I was told by this group I had to give up my court because they do this king of the hill thing where the winner stays on the court.
But the rules outside the court clearly say that it’s first come, first serve and that it’s open to anyone, and if there’s a line you have to give up the court after 60 minutes (which hadn’t elapsed yet). I’ve been to events where they have similar rules but for those events they’ve reserved these courts in advance. This is a public court with no reservation system. They even told me it wasn’t an open court / play but the rules state otherwise and explicitly mention no tournaments unless sponsored by the city. The other annoying thing is that the courts on the other side opened pretty soon after so I ended up taking that one after I gave mine up but they seemed to have wanted all the back courts.
Any opinions on “house rules” vs stated rules? What kind of etiquette do you generally follow in cities which might have more competition for courts but no reservations?

2023.03.25 23:25 hanksan123 Generalized Dystonia

Today it's been about 42 yrs I've been battling a movement Disorder called Dystonia I'm 51 now and I was properly Diagnosed at the age of 11yrs old. I've underwent DBS surgery Deep Brain Stimulation around 22 yrs ago and now there are no visible signs of the disorder it Sure was nice to Walk out of the hospital two days later leaving my wheelchair behind.its also an Honor to be the official poster child for DBS it's been 22 yrs since the surgery and adapting to the new life hasn't really been all that easy also the 30 yrs of hell I've been put through. there's definitely a reason for all this, it's definitely a test of some sort and Now at 51 I feel I've past The test kinda like I'm retired now and if I feel I want to have a few drinks here and there I don't see a problem with It I think I deserve it I've put in my time although im Still haunted from the past yrs of countless med cocktail's, false diagnosis's one after another that was pretty much between the age of 9 to 11 yrs old I was told I have Wilson's disease, Huntington's disease, a rare form of MS, a rare form of muscular dystrophy, possibly a rare form of brain cancer and these tests where repeated over and over each Doctor wanted there own so it seemed like it never ended. One important thing I've learned from all this is sometimes it's better not to fight so hard because with Dystonia the more you fight against the contractions the more it's just going to beat you into the ground! So I learned how to just work with it "if you can't beat em join em" so over time I learned different sensory tricks example modifying foot and leg braces or shoe's so they slightly touch or rub a sertan part of the leg or foot allowing the knees to bend or allowing me to take a better step also certain ways to stand or lean would also trigger a sensory trick and I was learning all this in the 5th grade I had a home teacher due to all the doctors appointments I had.. The craziest thing was I could ride BMX or ride motorcross because of The position I was sitting on the bike all the muscles would just relax and I had complet control over them, another one was running I couldn't walk without looking like I'm having a seizure but I could run extremely fast and ride extremely good.. sometimes I Get in the mood to write so sorry for going on and on. So sometimes if your in a Situation and your fighting tooth and nail just try not fighting things so hard, not to sound negative or anything like that but sometimes working with It is your better option.

2023.03.25 23:21 socialcontractlawyer Risen (2016) exceeded my expectation

(Forgive the roughness of these reviews/thoughts I write; I have two little kids, including a new baby, so I don't get a lot of time to edit what I write.)
First time I heard about this movie was last year when I was seeing Youtube ads for it, so I assumed it came out more recently, but it's a few years old; I never heard anything about it when it first came out. The premise was interesting to me but the trailer made it look cringe--namely the shot where the main Roman character slides down the wall staring at something offscreen in disbelief as the voiceover says "I don't know what to BELIEVE anymore!" (This wasn't how the shot played out in the actual movie luckily.)
I decided to give it a go this Lent just because the reviews were average-to-positive and figured it would have been received worse if it were really as cringe as my first impression based on the trailer.
Risen is basically a Bible fanfic where the main character is an OC, the Tribune Clavius, who reports directly to Pontius Pilate, and is sent to finish off the crucifixions of Jesus and the other two fellas, and then is forced to lead the investigation into the disappearance of Jesus's body.
The first half plays out like a mild horror movie. That sounds stupid and it probably wasn't intentional, but it fuckin does, just look at it! If you disregard the religious baggage associated with the story, it's literally about a guy who rises from the dead and a death cult forming around him. Obviously Jesus, neither in the traditional story nor in this movie, is depicted as a zombie, but the assumption the Romans are operating under is that this is a grave robbery and they need to race to find a rotting corpse somewhere before Jesus's followers proclaim his resurrection. Clavius is initially freaked out by the omens that accompanied Jesus's death, as well as the look on Jesus's face in death--his face after death is shown sparingly, just a couple of times in the crucifixion scene, and it isn't anything like how the crucified Jesus is usually depicted in other films, his face is frozen in a grimace with his eyes WIDE open and oozing blood. (It's a dummy, but it's convincing enough to suspend disbelief.) It has a creepy vibe unbecoming of the hopeful Christian story of overcoming death. And I liked it! I've never seen anything like it in a gospel adaptation.
Clavius never saw Jesus in life (nor does the viewer see him in life until later), so this is the only image of him he has in mind when Pilate orders him to investigate the disappearance of the body from the tomb a couple days later. Pilate wants the body to be produced to quell any rumors of resurrection, so Clavius orders the soldiers under him to excavate all fresh Jewish graves, including picking through a mass open grave near the site of the crucifixion. It gets kind of grisly and the Romans end up using some random rotting body that isn't recognizable enough to positively identify. (Christian cinema, everyone!)
The guards who had been at Jesus's tomb tell Clavius they fell asleep on duty, but eventually Clavius gets one to confess that they had witnessed something supernatural and had run away. Testimony from people who claim to have seen him alive haunt him further.
Finally he gets a lead to the house where Jesus's closest followers are hiding, and I thought the big reveal was actually done well. The camera pans over everyone in the room, and it takes a moment to recognize Jesus; the viewer is caught off-guard, since we previously have only seen one grisly shot of him in death, so we and Clavius both are surprised. Jesus disappears from among them like an apparition (as he tends to do in many of the gospel stories), but Clavius finally allows himself to believe that the man he saw dead was definitely alive in some way. The horror elements (that I may or may not have imagined) end here, and the plot goes on to adapt the other post-resurrection appearance stories with Clavius sort of observing in the background, until Jesus's ascension.
The film Tries Really Hard to be "historically accurate" and while it's not perfect it makes the setting more immersive. The Romans' costumes for example looked good enough for viewers with a passing knowledge of what a Roman soldier would have worn. Also this is the only gospel adaptation I've seen so far (and anyone could correct me if they've seen otherwise) that depicts the crucifixion victims being nailed by both their feet to the sides of the upright, which is probably how it would have been done, as opposed to the traditional depiction of both feet being nailed together to the front of it. Jesus is called "Yeshua" (Jesus's actual name in Aramaic) to separate the plot from the traditional religious story and give it a more historical flavor. Off the top of my head with my limited knowledge I did notice some things that aren't accurate, like there wouldn't be an open pit where bodies were left to rot in the open indefinitely in Jerusalem, and Jewish characters would not just be casually saying the Name of God so often. (The Name is said A LOT in this movie, it's actually kind of offensive if you're religious. It would have been fine if it was just Clavius saying it in ignorance a couple of times. A lot of evangelicals just say it casually IRL, so it's not a surprise to me, but still.)
As for special effects, they were a bit cheap-looking, like the earthquake looked sort of bad for example. And practical effects for that matter--I mentioned the Jesus dummy before, it looked pretty good but I could still tell it was a dummy! The only special effect I was impressed by was the ascension, basically Jesus just...launches himself into the sun? And it looked good and was cool but it was kind of funny. Not sure what a not-funny ascension would look like.
Everyone's performances were fine, can't say Joseph Fiennes as Clavius made for the most interesting main character but whatever. (Also Draco Malfoy was in this movie!! Tom Felton played a soldier reporting to Clavius. I was excited to see him.)
My overall assessment was that this movie exceeded my low expectation and was even kind of good? The premise is neat and it was well executed for the most part.

2023.03.25 22:41 jyrkibelle Was my childhood home haunted or was it just my imagination?

I’m not sure if this belongs here, because I’m not sure if this experience is real or just wild imagination, but when I was a little child, around 4-6 years old maybe, i used to hear voices from our house’s kitchen. These voices would come around at maybe 5am, when the sun was already out so as a child it wasn’t that scary anymore. I would hear a family of 3 talking in our kitchen (i couldn’t see there from my room). The family had mom and dad and a son. They splashed water and kept laughing as if they wanted to make fun of us by wasting our water. Every time i’d wake up to these noises, but it never made me want to go and see what was going on because I was scared. I’d just take my pillow and blanket and run to my parents room to sleep in between them. I’d still hear these voices there but I felt safe because I was with my parents. The craziest thing in all of this is that my big sister heard them too! We just never talked about it back then, but after we moved out we got to talking about this and she said she had the exact same experience😳 this has always freaked me out because i guess we’ll never know if it was just a coincidence or was our childhood home haunted!

2023.03.25 22:18 A_Vespertine A Strange Planet

The two strange beings staring out at one another from across the temperate grassland were evolutionary cousins, both descendants of the long-extinct progenitor race of Homo sapiens primaevus. Ironically, only the least human of the pair was aware of that.
His name was Telandros, though he normally neither spoke nor thought in a phonetic language. The only parts of him that were ‘biological’ was a brain more than thrice the size of an ordinary human’s and some auxiliary tissues, and these cells were comprised of synthetic XNA helixes that were vastly more complex and information-dense than DNA or RNA. Perpetually self-correcting and self-optimizing, both his psyche and flesh had persevered for thousands of millennia, and could easily survive for thousands more. The rest of his body was a polymorphic biomechanoid made of nigh-indestructible exotic matter, currently configured into the relatively traditional form of a four-limbed theropod.
His exterior was covered in a coat of iridescent, silvery filaments, each one fully prehensile and fractally branching off into smaller prehensile filaments, going all the way down to the molecular level. His large brain and other essential components were soundly secured within his ellipsoid torso, allowing his 'head' - which was actually just the end of his forwards facing tentacle - to be dedicated solely to an array of sensory apparatuses. His ‘face’ was composed of a rotatable, dilatable ring of six elliptical eyes, with multiple sets of air intake valves that were able to analyze the local atmosphere. His forelimbs, which moments ago he had used as wings to soar across the sky, were now a sprawling mangle of branching tentacles, whereas his hindlimbs were held together much more tightly to serve as legs. His tail, though currently only being used for counterbalance, could be repurposed into a third leg or extra arm in a jiffy if he needed it.
Mighty posthuman though he was, much like an ordinary human, Telandros couldn’t actually recall the early years of his life. Superfluous information was routinely condensed and pruned, and at some point over the aeons, his creation and nascent existence had been reduced to mere declarative memory as impersonal as anything else in his mental encyclopedia. While he had never been to Earth before, he knew that his ship, the Forenaustica, had originated in Sol. His crewmates had been star-hopping from one solar system to the next, spending decades to centuries studying each one before moving on at near-light speed. Eventually, they had circumnavigated the entire galaxy and returned to Sol.
They were first greeted by the Star Sirens, a very ancient race of microgravity-adapted transhumans that were said to date back nearly to the beginning of humanity’s expansion into outer space. Conservative even by immortal standards, they had changed little in all the time that the Forenaustica had been gone. Like sharks and crocodilians, the Star Sirens viewed themselves as already perfect and beyond any need to evolve further.
While a race of early transhumans that was still counted among the genus Homo may have seemed primitive to Telandros, they were still the most numerous race in Sol or any other star system with a permanent human presence, and all must yield to their authority as mistresses of the skies. Their success was a testament to the importance of initial conditions in the history of spacefaring civilizations. Had Telandros’s race come first, they would have easily outcompeted the Star Sirens before they could have gained a foothold in the cosmos. But the Star Sirens had capitalized on their first-mover advantage, and now the mermaids the ancient bioengineers had turned loose would rule the stars forevermore.
It had been the Star Sirens who had given Telandros – along with his ship and crew – their phonetic names. They were also incidentally the reason he was now called a ‘he’ at all. Telandros, of course, had no sex chromosomes, no reproductive organs, and no psychological or social gender. But to the Star Sirens, all men were foreigners, and at some point in their culture’s history, all foreigners had become men by default, so that’s what they put on his visa.
While the Star Sirens may have treated the crew of the Forenaustica as coldly as they would any outsiders, they escorted them to Mars without a fuss, where they were treated to a much warmer welcome.
Telandros had been delighted to find that Mars was now a sprawling ecumenopolis. In the low gravity and thin atmosphere, pressurized skyscrapers made of imperishable materials that averaged over a thousand stories high had gradually accumulated to the point that they now blanketed the once-red planet and housed trillions of sapient beings. It was so vast, that the planet’s average temperature was kept above freezing simply by the city’s waste heat, hundreds of thousands of terawatts beamed to them from the Dyson swarm of solar collectors that had once been Mercury.
The Martians themselves were much like Telandros’ own people; a well-ordered Technate of demi-godly posthumans with a Saganian love of science and reason. They welcomed them home as prodigal sons, eager to learn of their long expedition and celebrate their courage and scientific spirit. Telandros happily spent his first few hundred days on Mars telepathically exchanging higher-dimensional semantic graphs with the hyper-intellectual elites, or soaring amongst the literal skyscrapers through the rarified atmosphere. He didn’t dare to dive too deep, however, for the fetid abyssal depths were long-neglected and were perilous for civilized beings to explore.
While Mars may now have been the heart of human civilization, the Earth would always be its cradle. Though Telandros fully intended to spend the bulk of his planned centuries in Sol on Mars, when the planet once again came into alignment with Earth, he decided to spend the next couple of years paying it a visit.
Earth was a strange planet, though in fairness it always had been. History that bordered on legend said that the first humans had once reached a population of around ten billion, but over centuries and millennia of low birthrates and high emigration to the exponentially growing numbers of idyllic centrifugal space habitats or Venusian cloud cities, the population eventually fell to under two billion and remained there. Most of Earth was a nature preserve, its climate and ecology now ironically kept in an unnatural stasis by its sapient population, who lived minimally disruptive lives either in self-sufficient city-states or rural homesteads.
The posthumans of Mars had not spoken highly of the locals, considering the (relatively) near-baseline transhumans who required an intact ecosystem to survive and prosper to be little different from the rest of the wildlife. To them, Earth was an undeveloped back-water, and kept so by a sense of posterity and sentimentality that their utilitarian minds found difficult to comprehend.
Telandros however had found the Earth folk eccentrically diverse in body and mind, a pleasant change from the insufferably homogenous and conformist Star Sirens he first met. Though they were simple by his standards, they at least didn’t think of him as a god or demon as some primitive aliens he had encountered on his travels had, and he generally found them accepting and helpful.
The vast nature preserves he visited were not completely unpeopled, but were home to indigenous tribes of techno-primitivist. One such tribe of genetically engineered Goliathans roamed the plains and woodlands, herding mammoths and terror birds, eschewing any technology other than what they could make with their own hands or the nanite symbiotes in their bodies. The men stood over eight feet tall and had strength enough to deadlift several tonnes, and feared not even the most ferocious of beasts. They were noble savages who used their superhuman intellects solely to philosophically justify their lives as noble savages, and Telandros had found them even more insufferably self-righteous than the Star Sirens.
But the being in front of him now was not one of the techno-primitivists. It was simply a primitive.
The creature was slight of build, though its torso was pear-shaped with strong gluteal muscles, and stood upon three-toed, digitigrade feet. It was only about half as tall as the Goliathan men, but seemed unlikely to be a pygmy relative. However, its dusty blue skin and silvery white hair were enough to mark it as a genetically modified being, even if that modification had occurred countless generations ago. It possessed pointed, articulated ears held high in attention, and its large, cat-like eyes glowed with a soft eyeshine in the evening light. It curiously sniffed the air with a large nose, which – when combined with its enlarged upper lip – gave it a noticeably rodent-like appearance. Most curiously of all, the thick, badger-like claws on its hands suggested that they were intended for digging, not tool use.
A quick analysis of the DNA particles floating in the air confirmed Telandros’ suspicion that the creature did in fact belong to the genus Homo, but a scan of its anatomy revealed its brain to be around seven hundred cubic centimeters in size; twice the size of an average chimp’s, but barely half that of a baseline human. Was this a species of human that had been engineered for lower intelligence, to the point of being sub-sapient? An utterly nihilistic and misanthropic concept, to be sure, but Telandros couldn’t deny that the results were at least scientifically interesting.
The creature let out a high-pitched yipping sound, and several others of his kin cautiously poked their heads out from over the tall grasses to examine the strange, shiny terror bird that was trespassing in their territory. One of the females had a miniature version of the creatures riding upon her back, one with a sloth-like body plan and disproportionately large head and ears, its long claws interlocking upon her clavicle. Telandros naturally assumed that it was an infant, and didn’t bother to examine it any closer.
Instead, he checked the up-to-date encyclopedia he had downloaded for any information it might have on the strange beings. He immediately found that they had been given the seemingly endearing name of Knollings and were descendants of some of the earliest eco-sapiens. These had been primitivists who had opted for genetic modifications to minimize their ecological footprints. Unlike the Goliathans, who had prioritized their own survival and well-being when redesigning their bodies for a stone age lifestyle, the eco-sapiens had wanted to have as little impact on the natural environment as possible. This meant not only making themselves smaller, but altruistic enough that they would willingly endure the sacrifices their lifestyle demanded of them for the benefit of an abstract concept of nature that could never consciously appreciate it. Their altruism eventually led to them becoming completely eusocial, and their utter dependence on their tribe – along with the demands for conformity – had actively selected against high intelligence. Electively cut off from civilization, they were at the mercy of natural selection, and over the aeons, their full sapience had been lost.
Tragic, but at least not atrocious, Telandros thought. He saw in his encyclopedia that they did still possess a simple language with a few hundred short words, which they would compound together when that vocabulary proved inadequate. The precise and information-dense phonetic languages of the other transhumans Telandros had met already seemed like oversimplified baby talk to him, but he supposed he could give this a shot as well. He carefully constructed the simplest semantic graph in his mind that still conveyed what he wanted, and vocalized it into the Knollings’ language.
“Hoot! Good-hoot! Very-good-hoot at sun-bye! Am far-man! Far-man go very-far in black-sky! Far-man go all around big star-family and see very many stars! Far-man come home after big-time! Far-man like new-things! You new-things to far-man! Trade stories with far-man? Hoot!”
The Knollings stared silently at him for a moment before exchanging confused glances with one another. They had never heard a terror bird talk before, he assumed, but they also lacked the intellectual capacity to be astonished by such a thing.
“What?” the first of them finally barked back.
Telandros hung his head in resignation. Productive communication between himself and the Knollings was likely not possible. As he wondered if one of the Goliathans might be able to serve as an interpreter between them, the baby babbled something that he didn’t bother to translate. His packmates, however, heeded the command and all turned their backs to Telandros in unison, dropping to all fours and scampering off through the tall grass.
Not wanting to let this unexpected opportunity pass him by, Telandros sprinted off after them in pursuit. He switched his focus to his infrared vision so as not to lose them in the grass, though they proved to be not much warmer than the surrounding environment. Keeping his distance and stooping well below the grass so as not to alarm them, he ran along the ground as silently as an owl in flight.
He watched as the Knollings all formed into a single file, then disappeared down a large tunnel into the earth. This was no doubt the warren that they had dug with their own claws, and according to his encyclopedia, there would be dozens to hundreds of Knollings spread throughout an extensive network of tunnels and chambers. Telandros retracted his limbs and elongated his torso to adopt a more weasel-like profile and slunk down the tunnel, eager to see the great Knoll Hole for himself.
He had been prepared to use his infrared and sonar sensors to view the warren, but to his surprise, he saw a glimmer of blue light twinkling just up ahead. Upon closer inspection, he saw that it was a log with large bioluminescent mushroom caps growing out of it, its placement suggesting that the Knollings were using it as a lamp. The regular placement of other such mushroom logs throughout the tunnel seemed to confirm this hypothesis, and soon Telandros came upon a chamber that was completely awash in the soft blue glow. Peeking his head inside, Telandros saw an immense and orderly stockpile of the logs, alongside storage niches filled with picked mushroom caps by themselves. He realized that the Knollings must have been farming the mushrooms for food and light, and most likely the shiny beetles he saw feeding on the rotting wood as well. This was likely a holdover from their eco-sapien days, and it made him wonder what other more complex behaviours these lowly creatures might still retain.
A pair of Knollings in the chamber spotted him immediately and began yipping, a warning cry that was echoed by a hundred other voices throughout the warren as they dashed off down another tunnel. Telandros could tell that they were heading towards some kind of large, central chamber, something he was determined to see with his own eyes before returning to the surface. Swiftly, he pulled himself along like some lizard chasing burrowing rodents, or at least that’s surely how he seemed to the Knollings. Soon the tunnel ended, dropping him into a vast subterranean cavern that had been dug out by claw generation by generation. A shaft of crepuscular light beamed down from the surface through a ventilation chimney, beneath which lay a hand-dug well that provided the Knollings with their water, and a hearth they kept for fire. Dozens of the Knollings had assembled in the central chamber, and all had gathered around a singular, venerated figure; their queen.
She wasn’t hard to spot, being not only larger than the others but taller as well – nearly as tall as a baseline human woman. It seemed that most of the Knollings were neotenic, never experiencing full puberty unless selected to breed. Only one female could breed at a time, and she dedicated herself fully to the responsibility. She was surrounded by a harem of several breeding males and wet nurses who cared for the offspring she produced.
The entire colony hissed and screeched at Telandros, trying to drive him off. One male, armed with a flint hand-axe virtually indistinguishable from one his Homo habilis forebearers might have used, leapt towards Telandros and struck him with it. The stone shattered to pieces, leaving his hand bleeding and Telandros utterly unscathed. Two more males tried attacking him in this manner, and experienced identical results.
The cries of the Knollings became increasingly panicked at this development, while Telandros remained utterly unperturbed. His attention was instead on one of the wet nurses and the infant suckling at her teat, an infant that did not look like the small being he had seen earlier. Puzzled, he surveyed the central chamber in its entirety, eventually spotting three of the large-headed, large-eared little ones seated in a circle of mushrooms that sprouted directly from the ground rather than from a log. All three were looking at him with a keen gaze that seemed more acute than what a Knolling should be capable of, let alone an infant.
Checking his encyclopedia once again, Telandros was startled to find that these small members of the warren weren’t infants or even juveniles, but rather shamans of the Gaia Trees.
The Gaia Trees were plants that had been engineered to be biological server hubs, and communicated with each other and more traditional internet cables through genetically modified and nanotech-enhanced mycelial networks. The mycelium also allowed them to communicate with the roots of other plants, shepherding their behaviour and continuously managing and optimizing the world’s biosphere. While this network was technically just a subset of the multi-layered noosphere that enveloped the Earth, the techno-primitivists revered the Gaian Overmind as their goddess. The Goliathan shamans were confident in their ability to interpret omens from her, but as far as Telandros had been able to tell, it was all superstitious nonsense.
But this was different. The fairy ring that contained the Knolling shamans was unquestionably an outgrowth of the Gaian mycelial network. Their luminescence waxed and waned in a deliberate pattern, and when the shamans placed their palms upon the mushroom caps, Telandros could detect electrochemical signals being exchanged between them.
He realized then that he had been wrong about these simple people. They had not sacrificed sapience and civilization to an abstract and indifferent concept of nature, but rather to an ecotechnological embodiment of her, and it was a sacrifice that had not gone unappreciated. The Gaian Overmind had shepherded these people’s evolution, sparing the intellect of the shaman caste so that they would have someone able to interpret her will for them. Even if most of them had the minds of toddlers, rationality and intelligence were never what their ancestors had truly valued about being human. Living as harmoniously as possible with nature and one another was what the eco-sapiens of old had valued above all else, and that was what their descendants now had.
And there was nothing tragic about that at all, he realized.
“Good-hoot, far-man!” one of the shamans greeted him in a high-pitched voice, the rest of the warren falling silent at the sound of his revered voice. “Big-mans no come to Knoll-hole, but you strange-man. You no know good-ways. You dummy-dumb, but Gaia say you spoke true of flying through stars. Stars very high, but very small. Gaia big, far-man! Gaia protects Knollings! Leave Knoll-hole, and we forgive bad-ways! Stay, and Gaia curse you! All things Gaia touches will be far-man enemies! Choose now, far-man!”
Though it amused him that the Knollings thought of him as stupid, given his earlier botched attempt at oral communication, he decided that it was better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open his mouth and prove it.
Instead, he placed his left forelimb onto a nearby log and extended his microscopic manipulators into the dead wood to draw out the carbon. Holding his forelimb high for all to see, he rapidly began assembling the carbon molecules into a stylized diamond figure of their sacred mushrooms. He intentionally designed its lattice to make it phosphorescent, so that it would always glow with the same light as the real things. When the idol was complete, and still hot in his hand, he delicately placed it within the fairy ring for the shamans to examine.
While the other Knollings – even the queen – gawked on in fear and wonder, the shamans knew through their bond with the Gaian Overmind that such a thing was not only possible but common among the civilized peoples. Each shaman inspected the offering one by one and, in turn, nodded their approval.
His peace offering accepted and his curse averted, Telandros bowed graciously before shooting up the chimney overhead. Launching himself straight into the air, he resumed his aerial theropod form and continued soaring across the grasslands. He meant now to study the Gaian Overmind in more detail, eager to discover what other unexpected interactions it might have with the ecosystem and its people. Earth truly was a strange planet.
But in all fairness, it always had been.

2023.03.25 22:10 A_Vespertine A Strange Planet

In the deep future, an advanced posthuman returns to Earth after an aeons-long sojourn across the Milky Way.

2023.03.25 22:06 petedee How should I help my son with play dates?

Hi all,
NT Dad here, long time lurker first time poster, please be gentle :)
My son is 5 1/2 and he is just starting to become social with other kids in his school. We had our first play date today with another kid coming over to our house. They played a bit on the trampoline then played some Untitled Goose Game until his Dad came to pick him up.
My sons special interest is crafting / junk modelling (think sticking toilet tubes and boxes together and colouring them in) he does it with his friend at school but his friend was more interested in playing Goose game, which seems to have maybe put my sons nose out of joint a little.
Anyway, we have now been asked if we would like to visit the friends house next weekend. When we’ve raised this with my son he hasn’t responded with a negative response but also hasn’t responded positively either. He has visited the house before for a birthday party and spent the entire time in his friends bedroom with my partner, away from the rest of the party.
He does warm up to people but it can sometimes take several hours, if we’re there he will often hide away, only talk to us, and ignore other people. Wether he would do this at his friends house or if he would be OK if left for a while we don’t know because we’ve never tried it.
It should be noted he is generally happy going in to school and nursery.
Any tips as to what we could to do to help him? I would like him to have some form of social life but I wouldn’t want to cause any long term stress or ruin his blossoming friendship.
