2023.03.29 21:44 wesleymjames OG UnderTow fun facts

OG UnderTow fun facts
I think the only reason I got the job was because both my company and Barter and Shake (ownership) were cast for a Discovery Channel show which aired shortly after we opened. To that date I had never designed or built a themed or immersive space. My practice was mostly custom modern homes and shipping container multifamily projects. Barter and Shake already had a fantastic name for the bar. It was a play on words as the bar was to be located in the basement of Sip Coffee and Beer which was housed in a former car shop and "tow" company building. The owner wanted a speakeasy style tiki bar with an emphasis on nautical decor because of the name they had chosen. I wanted to blow them away so I suggested that instead of putting decor up on flat walls that we actually recreate the cargo hold of a ship! They were honestly apprehensive to approved it but after creating renderings they approved it! I'm truly lucky that most of my work now is themed/immersive experiences, bars and restaurants. I'm hoping to do projects that we can operate ourselves. We're currently building a small escape room experience in the strip mall next to UnderTow Arcadia. Operating this will be a big first for us and I hope it's just the beginning of something much bigger! Attached are some photos of the OG UnderTow taken during construction and from the friends and family soft opening.

2023.03.29 21:43 woods_edge_ Info about Ithaca, Cornell and some takes on local hotels for Barton 5.8.23 concert

Although I am renting a room out myself. (It's posted on here if interested) Thousands of people will be coming to town, so I’m happy to answer anyone's questions about places up here, like if they are too funky or too far away. It's always hard to judge places if you don't know a town. Basic info...
Ithaca is small overall, and buses run to most places and lots of them go through the Cornell campus. The campus isn't that big. It’s walk-able for most, but hilly at some spots. (especially getting to the campus from downtown is hilly). If you are bringing a car, there shouldn't be any problem getting to campus, though Cornell might gouge you on parking. They said they will not be providing shuttle buses, so if people have mobility problems, they should contact the promoters.
Also, for anyone who is flying into Ithaca airport, it’s tiny, about a 10 -15 minute drive from town. Buses run from the airport to town and Cornell.
The bus system in Ithaca is called the TCAT, maps of routes are online, you can get almost anywhere by connecting buses.
Cheaper motels/hotels in town that have available spots as of my posting 3/29.
The Meadow Court Inn -$69 a night as of now. It is down by the strip with all the big box stores. You can easily walk to the center of downtown Ithaca where most restaurants are. It’s a good walk to Cornell/Barton, but if you walk a lot, it would be doable. Lots of city buses run down the street it’s on and many if not most will run through Cornell. The motel is old fashioned 70s style funky, but if you're a Deadhead you should be used to that, maybe even into it. I've seen lots of people staying there and partying outside the rooms during reunion week. This would be my first choice of the cheap motels with space on 5/8 and fair rates.
The Motel 8 is basically across the street and up a block or two, closer to downtown. It is too sketchy for me. If you've gotta stay there, okay, but it looks like they are price gouging for the event, so not worth it if high priced.
On the same stretch of road but further out from town and campus, and about a mile past the closest town bus stop are:
The Economy, the Roadway Inn, and the Grayhaven Motel all basically clumped together. Grayhaven is an upscale, redone, 1950s motel, it’s pricey.
The Economy Inn is a bare bones place. It's cheap and good enough for the price. It’s out of the action and not an easy walk to town or Cornell. You will need a car or bike. I stayed there for my first Ithaca visit. I locked all the windows and put a chair in front of the door before going to sleep. But it was fine.
The Roadway Inn is probably a little nicer than the Economy, it’s bigger, but it cost more.
On the other side of town, north of campus. Two hotels are listed.
The Trip Hotel, although having the ideal name for this concert, is completely closed and abandoned.
Cayuga Blu- has okay rates right now. It is a big newish box hotel. This area north of Cornell is about 3 miles from the campus. It’s not an overly hilly walk. Cayuga Blu is in an area with two slightly empty malls with a Target and 2 strip malls with supermarkets, so buses regularly run there from campus and downtown. This is where Cornell housed/quarantined students with Covid during the pandemic. Students complained about the hotel, but I don’t know, it’s an okay area, boring but okay.
Two other places close to campus, though no idea on availability or price. The Dorm is my favorite hotel near Cornell. You can't get any closer to campus (other than the Statler). Cross the street and your on campus, walk 5 minutes and your at the doors of Barton Hall. It is family owned by a Cornell hotelie who is a very nice guy. The Best Western on east hill is close to Barton Hall, there are a couple of moderate hills, but it is walk-able and might be almost as close a walk as the parking they will offer. It's about 1.5 miles to Barton. It's next to a few stores, a super market, collegetown bagels, a Chinese restaurant and a liquor store and a nice restaurant AGAVA.

2023.03.29 21:42 NavSock Catching up on financial planning

My spouse (33) and I (36) both work in higher ed. Due to long education and training phases, we only started making proper salaries last year. I make $130k/year and my spouse $60k/year gross. We have a 3 month old. We have no debt and we are currently renting ($2700/mo incl. util.). We own one car outright. We currently have about $120k in checking/savings accounts and ~$35k in tax-deferred retirement accounts.
We are just starting on a path of financial planning, and would love to receive feedback on what we have come up with so far.
Our goals are: 1. Save and invest for retirement. 2. Buy a house in 0-2 years. 3. Save for other smaller goals like travel, possibly another car, etc.
Retirement:
Our employer offers 401a with 7% match. We both contribute to our respective 401a plans (contributions are fixed at 7%). Additionally, my spouse contributes 7% to a Roth 403b and I have just started contributing 10.25% to a Roth 403b. We do not have any IRAs (traditional or Roth).
Should I/we be contributing more to 403b accounts and/or open IRAs? Does it make sense to add a taxable account to the mix?
I am thinking of investing my retirement contributions in vanguard-like low cost index funds in a 70 domestic stock / 20 international stock/ 10 bond portfolio, with bond % to be increased over time. Is that too aggressive for a 36 year old? We are fairly new to thinking about retirement so any advice here would be highly appreciated.
Housing:
Assuming interest rates will hover around 6-7% for the foreseeable future, would it make any sense to buy a house? The house we are renting (that we like living in) has a redfin price of ~$450k and we could probably put 20% within a few months.
I probably should have been more specific about some of the factors, but I'd be happy to add more detail in comments or edit the post as needed. Thanks a lot in advance!

2023.03.29 21:42 ShinyKnickers The Well Spa & Hotel

I am currently staying at The Well Spa, about 20 minutes outside of Oslo, and I can not recommend it highly enough.
The Well has about 10 different saunas and a number of swimming pools, other than a Tuesday all saunas and pools are textile free. You do wear a robe between saunas and in the communal areas but most people happily walk round naked between the showers and the sauna, the atmosphere is incredibly relaxed. I arrived today at 12pm and immediately stripped off to hit the Spa, it is not 21:30 and I am lying in bed still naked, I have little intention to wear clothes until I need to leave on Friday morning.
Besides the Spa, the hotel also has an amazing restaurant and brasserie, the restaurant is a dress up restaurant, however since the brasserie is attached to the Spa you can dine in your robe, an opportunity I jumped at. I had an amazing vegetarian meal, roast polenta, then gnocchi with blue cheese, they do have meat and fish on the menu and I plan to try that tomorrow.
I think there are about 10 different saunas across the Spa, my favorites so far are the Japanese meditation sauna, a mild sauna where it is easy to drift away, and the guarden sauna. The Guarden sauna is next to the outdoor pool which is not heated, you can soak up the heat in the sauna then jump in the pool to cool off. I care not think how cold the water is, but the air temperature is -3 celsius, so I guess 2 degrees celsius. Let’s say refreshing.
There is heated in door pool that has the most interesting jacuzzi bubbles, very relaxing but also somewhat stimulating, as a man you need to be careful. I would like to bet the ladies would rather enjoy them.
In all, The Well is an amazing place, friendly staff, amazing decor, fabulous saunas, I can not recommend it highly enough.

There was an initiative launched in 2021 in Calgary called the 'The giving wall'. It was a way to buy some meals for people in need. Is it still around? Anyone know any restaurants that participate in it currently?

2023.03.29 21:39 22every-day Windows 10 Pro PC won't boot - can only access safe mode via bios

Specs listed at the bottom - after a routine restart PC wouldn't boot, got stuck in the 'preparing automatic repair'/black screen loop. Clicked on remove all apps and keep files, didn't fix the problem. Eventually got into safe mode via bcdedit in bios but I still can not boot normally

Just looking for anything I can try to get to the root of the problem. I'm now getting no errors on a CHKDSK check (Although when I check the properties of my C: and D: drive it says repair this drive - and directs me to a CHKDSK log from a week AFTER my PC stopped booting - simply says run CHKDSK /f to repair, which I have), I have run an SFC and DISM with no success, tried to update all drivers none needed updating

Anything else I can try to work out what is causing the issue? I don't mind losing all files on my PC is necessary. Thanks in advance

2023.03.29 21:38 cherryandfizz It’s rude to respond to a text with “??”… if you don’t understand what I said, ask me to explain. Don’t fucking assume that I know what you don’t understand about my text message.

I think it’s really rude to respond to a text message with just question marks. It gives absolutely no context as to what you don’t understand about the message you’re repainting too, especially if there was more than one point in the message.
For instance. If I messaged you with “Hiya, do you know if Eloise is going to the football game tonight? She said she’d get back to me on Saturday but hasn’t. Also thanks for the flowers you sent, they’re lovely!” or I sent a Snapchat photo to you of the name of a restaurant I had been to that YOU asked for…
If you replied back with “??”… you are rude. I’m sorry, but it grinds my gears so so so much. Why are you sending me question marks? How do I respond? I have a great idea, how about using words the way we’re supposed to communicate! It’s rude because you’re assuming I know what you don’t understand about my message & it makes people feel like shit.
I understand if I sent it to the wrong person, or if they had absolutely no clue what I’m on about. But when they know what I’m talking about because we talked about it so many times, or if they were the one who asked me to send the text message to them - why? People who send that, tell me why. Please.
It’s just happened to me and made me really annoyed/sad because it makes me feel like I’ve done something wrong or have sent something bad etc. It’s really bummed me out.

2023.03.29 21:29 UVALawStudent2020 What's the COA at Harvard Law after interest? Answer (with math) will be posted at 5:00pm ET.

It is extremely difficult to wrap your head around cost of attendance after interest. As a recent law school grad with student loans, I post this every year to (hopefully) help 0Ls realize the total cost of their education and make better decisions regarding where to attend law school. Harvard is generally worth the cost and this is not meant to shame HLS (all law schools are expensive), but rather to demonstrate how COA actually imapacts those who are using loans to finance their law school education by example of the most popular and perhaps the best regarded law school in the country.

I work for a 135 carrier and am able to fly 120hrs/mo. My carrier counts this time by the minutes, rather than actual block. Currently I have a few days left in the month to fly and I’m scheduled at 120.3 but by the minutes I’m at 109hrs23min. They’re adding flying to my schedule. Is this legal?
