Sniper Elite in the Pacific: Manchuria 1945
2023.03.25 23:29 Phallus_Maximus69C Sniper Elite in the Pacific: Manchuria 1945
| Japanese Kwantung Army. After France, the series should go over the globe to the Pacific against the Japanese, local forces and the Soviets. The Soviets unleashed an all out offensive in August 1945 and routed the Japanese Kwantung Army. This scenario could have Karl fighting anyone and everyone in the hunt for some Japanese superweapon the West doesn't want falling into Soviet hands. The Soviet invasion was an armaggedon in the area and the chaos it produced is felt even today. The Soviets dismantled Chinese industries in their occupied sectors and brought back everything that wasn't nailed to the ground (just as they did in Germany) and this contributed to Mao's victory in 1949. The Soviets also conquered Korea, leading it to be divided in two countries. The Soviets also invaded the Japanese islands in the Kurils. Map of the Soviet movement. The Battle of Berlin ended in May 1945, while the Pacific campaign was still raging up; and it woulg go on to the first ten days of September 1945. US president Roosevelt asked Stalin to declare war on Japan and open a new front in Manchuria. Stalin asked for six months in order to shift his forces from Germany to the East. It is perfectly feasible for Karl to be sent to fight in Burma and China in special assignments for SOE and OSS. Those missions could be critical in stopping Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of Japan set for September 1946. One such invasion on Japanese holy ground would be an absolute blood bath (so many Purple Hearts were ordered they are still being awarded). The Americans planned to send in 5 million men in the operation, plus allied French, British, Canadians and ANZACs. Forces: The Soviets, Japanese and Chinese Soviet troops entering Harbin, 21 August 1945. The Soviet Red Army was the largest land force in the world, and fell like a hammer on the Japanese and their Chinese allies. The Soviets in Manchuria would fight with a mix of Soviet and US lend-lease equipment, plus modern and earlier Soviet equipment, as divisions would have come from Berlin and others from the Soviet east, and those would be equipped in 1939 equipment; such as the SSh-36 helmet " Khalkingolka". This would give variety to Soviet soldiers. The Shermans from Zombie Army could be recycled as Soviet lend-lease Shermans for the player to blow up. The Soviet Army also had the help of the Mongolian army, and the Soviet Naval Infantry (marines) had distinctive black uniforms. The Soviets also employed "Diversionary Units" ( Spetsnaz, special forces) deep behind the Japanese lines, which could also be an interesting plot point. SSh-36 helmet: some can be seen with Soviet soldiers in Manchuria. Soviet M4A2 Sherman crew fraternizing with Chinese Manchurian civilians. 'Landing in the Kuril Islands', painting by Russian artist A.I. Plotnov, 1948. The black and white uniforms are clearly visible. The Kuwantung Army was considered an elite and a source of pride in the Japanese military. The army was a Japanese force augmented by Chinese and Mongol auxiliaries (plus a brigade of Russians). Among those Chinese puppets was the Manchukuo puppet emperor Puyi's forces. They had similar Japanese uniform, with headgear slightly different and receiving some "passable" training. The Japanese had an extensive illegal trade of Opium in occupied China that grew steadily during the Japanese tenure, used in order to fund their occupation; this could be explored somehow to hamper their operations. The unforgiving terrain of the Pacific, with thick vegetation and gigantic trees, had its own rules for sniping. The Japanese were masters of camouflage and concealment, with Japanese snipers being found in trees, manholes, tunnels and fighting to the death. The Japanese could bayonet-charge your sorry ass in the game with some sort of animation for the player to escape/deal with it. Japanese tank column in China. Japanese tankers drinking sake. The Chinese Pro-Japanese Chinese soldiers armed with SIG M1920 submachine guns (Swiss-made MP18). They have mostly Japanese-style unifom, with one of them using a former KMT M35 helmet. Forces in this massive operation included not only the Soviet mechanized juggernaut and Japan's most intact forces in the mainland, but also the Mongolians allied with the Soviets, and the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo's Kwantung Army, both of them having Mongol horsemen just like in Medieval Ages. The Chinese fighting in the war were all over the place: - There were the Chinese of the Nationalist forces (KMT);
- The communist forces of Mao Zedong;
- The pro-Japanese troops;
- And the Warlord Armies, which were private and changed sides all the time.
Pro-Japanese puppet troops, including a Mongol horseman (left). Chinese puppet troops, Manchukuo puppet emperor Puyi in the center. Manchukuo Cavalry of Chinese Kwantung Army Auxiliaries. Allied intelligence in 1945 estimated over 900,000 men in Chinese puppet armies, a considerable force in the region. Soldiers of a private Warlord army in the movie The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). They wear those brassards because then they could change sides at short notice. Chinese KMT sniper school, 1937. All of those could either help or attack the protagonist according to changing allegiances, without prior warning to the player. Karl speaks Russian, so he can understand the Soviet, but he does not speak either Japanese or Chinese. This would force him to depend on a Chinese contact, an Zombie Army already gave us one: Jun. She is a soldier from the Kuamintang (KMT) and, according to her in-game headgear option, Jun's Cap option states she was once apart of the Eighth Route Army. This army was one of the competent ones of the KMT but it was only nomially subordinated to it: they belonged to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). So she could play a double game. Jun as seen in Zombie Army 4: Dead War. Wonder weapons Since Sniper Elite always has some sort of Wunderwaffe, one mission could be about destroying a Japanese Tiger. In real life, they could not ship the Tiger to Japan because the seas belonged to the Allies, but in this case at least one (or maybe 2?) could have arrived and its destruction would become a top priority, needing the sniper with the deepest voice to deal with it. Artwork showing a Japanese Tiger with German technicians in the Pacific. The main Wonder Weapon could be a toxic gas from experiments conducted by the dreadful Unit 731 who could give the Japanese the illusion of being able to defeat the Allies in the Home Islands, and thus keep fighting instead of surrendering - atomic bombs notwithstanding. The Japanese also had armoured divisions in China (yes, divisions), and they had some heavier tanks in the Japan proper for their planned last stand. For the sake of storytelling, they could garrison a few of those in Manchuria defending secret bases involved in their grand project. Unit 731 personnel conduct a bacteriological trial upon a test subject in Nongan County of northeast China’s Jilin Province. November 1940. Top: Japanese Type 3 Chi-Nu in 1945. Bottom: Japanese soldier posing with Type 4 Ho-Ro SPG and Type 4 Chi-To tank. DLC - Shoot Tojo.
- Shoot Stalin.
- Karl goes after Yamashita's Gold in the Phillipines, being supported by the Mexican 201st Fighter Squadron "Aztec Eagles".

2023.03.25 23:02 Morzo_Voidmaster Sassy Cola - three short stories describing a timeline where the future is guided by a soda company
3,659th Quarterly Meeting
Kilometer-long freighters docked and undocked from Port Vesta. Ventral doors opened to let in adamantine loading arms, the size of which existed only in tales of primordial titans for much of human history. Once reloaded, the ships departed for humanity's interstellar colonies at Tau Ceti, Aldebaran and Rigel. So choked with ship-induced warp bubbles was Vesta that stargazing was a fruitless pastime for many millions of kilometers out.
And all this was visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the most important conference room humanity had ever known.
Cool air circulated through the 40 by 20 by 5 meter room. 20.4 degrees Celsius, the perfect temperature to keep ambitious minds in line with corporate procedure. And no minds were more ambitious than those sitting in here.
9 of the most powerful human beings alive sat around the rectangular conference table, four on each of its long sides and one at the end farthest from the door. Their perfect faces were reflected in its polished black marble, craftsmanship reflecting in craftsmanship, one working in flesh and the other in stone. Their suits ran the gamut of subdued color, from black to gray to blue to beige to brown, though all but one had a metallic sheen. No one tried speaking before the meeting began. Everything that would be said today had been written and rewritten over the previous weeks. Today was a formality, a tradition practiced by an organization that had existed for 914 years.
Yet everyone in the room knew that the predetermined decision formalized today thrust their organization into foreign territory.
The man at the end of the table stood up. His dark brown suit was only two shades distant from his dark brown skin, most on display on his shaved and polished head. He removed his black-framed glasses from their perch 210 centimeters above the floor and tucked them into his breast pocket, 170 centimeters above the floor.
"Members of The Board," he said, "I declare this, the 3,659th quarterly meeting, open."
A woman, nearest on his left, stood up as he sat down. She wore a beige suit whose metallic sheen paled in comparison to her voluminous blonde hair. In her lilly white hands was the Quarterly Profit Report.
"Mr. CEO," she said in her most authoritative voice, "I'm proud to report that we have once again met the expectations of the founder. From July 1st to September 30th, 2999 CE, we maintained a profit margin of 80.0 %. As of September 30th, we hold a market share of 99 % and a market capitalization of 400 quadrillion credits."
The woman sat down. The other eight clapped their approval.
A man, nearest on Mr. CEO's right, stood up. His gray suit complemented the full head of silver hair installed on his scalp and chin. Strong and youthful hands, grown in a vat and transplanted onto this bicentenarian, held the Readiness Assessment Report from the R&D Department.
"The Instant Sassy program has achieved level 4 certainty as of August 16th, 2999 CE. They can now create a maximum of 1 kilogram of mass and replicate drink and bottle in one go. Mass production of the Instant Sassy vending machines awaits your approval, Mr. CEO."
The man sat down. Clapping ensued.
Five more members of The Board provided their tidbits of information, but everyone knew the best was saved until last.
A young man, actually young in contrast to everyone else's purchased youth, rose from his seat at the doorward end of Mr. CEO'S left side. He wasn't more than 30. He was only 160 centimeters in height. His hair and suit were both pitch black and without sheen. Most of the board wondered if the boy even combed. He certainly didn't shave. His delicate fingers held a one page legal summary.
"Mr. CEO," he said in a monotone lawyer-stating-the-facts voice, "it has come to the attention of the legal department that a small firm at Rigel is selling a 1-to-1 clone of Sassy Cola, though under the branding of Flash Cola. As there is no reliable intellectual property enforcement that far out, we suggest Sassy Cola Company perform a cease-and-desist operation."
The clapping that followed was, as planned, subdued to balance The Board's recognition of his work and the dire situation he described.
Mr. CEO stood once more to give the final address.
"Members of The Board, we stand at a precipice. Military action against a small firm is a bold move. Then again, the Sassy Cola Company is no stranger to bold moves. It was a bold move when in 2085 my great great grandmother started this company in order to sell her sassafras-enriched soda. It was a bold move when we spent the 23rd century expanding Earth's launch capabilities so that humanity could colonize the solar system and thereby create new markets for Sassy Cola. And it was a bold move when in 2610 we invented the FTL warp drive so that humanity could settle the stars and buy more Sassy Cola. So let's put this to a vote. All in favor of sending a cease-and-desist?"
Five members raised their right hand.
"All opposed?"
Three other members raised their right hand.
"Five for and three against. And I vote in favor, giving the issue the 2/3 majority it needs. A cease-and-desist will be sent to Rigel as soon as the ship is ready. I declare this, the 3,659th Quarterly Meeting, adjourned."
All nine stood and clapped, excessively, as if their noise could bury the question of ethics.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, a kilometer-long ship (built by Sassy Heavy Industries) docked at Port Vesta (technically Sassy Drive Yards) and loaded up with cargo containers (built and owned by Sassy Shipping) to be delivered to Aldebaran (Sassy Cola Aldebaran, subsidiary).
Dr. Megalomanovich
The walls and ceiling and floor of the office never stayed the same color for long. They meandered through the greens, brighter then darker, strolled along the beach with various tans, took a dip in the water with cyan blue and finished by going back to the greens. They were cymolds, cybernetic funguses, and they formed the surface of every room in the administration wing of Sassy Research Installation #544.
It wasn't a very well publicized installation. No research from here had ever appeared on Sassy Science Direct's Top 10 Breakthroughs of the Year. Of course, that meant what they were doing was very, very important. Another reason to locate the place so far from the rest of human civilization.
Far from civilization is a relative term. To be far on the surface of a planet, you got to be, eh, 100 kilometers away. To be far in the context of a star system, make that 100 million kilometers. To be far from humanity in the year 3535 CE, you have to be 100 light years away. And that's just what we were. 100 light years separated us from the nearest human outpost. Not the nearest built-up star system or lone asteroid city. No, I mean 100 light years from the nearest hitch-em-up, one warpship, sorry excuse for an outpost. Nothing lay in-between and no one was coming to rescue you if you broke down halfway.
But that was the price of admission if you wanted to meet Dr. Megalomanovich.
To the layman, his name means nothing. To the educated, resentment. To the dreamers, hope. He is the greatest mind of our time bar none. And, like all great minds, he has created controversy.
The cymold on these walls was invented by him while he was still in secondary school 150 years ago. He designed the meter-thick mycelium fibers which root Installation #544 to its carbonaceous asteroid in an undergraduate mycology class. Since then he has: led a team which developed an all-biological fusion reactor, led another team that made a proof of concept for matter-antimatter annihilation based metabolism and singlehandedly created a cow subspecies that produces Sassy Cola instead of milk.
This last accomplishment most impressed the one and only financial backer of all human science, the Sassy Cola Company.
It didn't matter that Sassy Cola was already made in the most efficient way physically possible, by assembling it, bottle and all, from the fundamental elements themselves via vending machine MDROM-derived replicators, because Sassy from an udder was cool to the average consumer.
And so Dr. Megalomanovich was scooped up and shipped off to Installation #544. Here he has remained for 120 years doing . . . something. I'm here to find out what.
A chubby man with pudge stuffed unsuccessfully into a white lab coat walked in to the office. His eyes had been replaced by cybernetics—not eyes, but an assortment of twitching miniature radar dishes and antennae. His thick white hair is gelled straight back like the racing helmet of a bicyclist. It took me a minute to realize that this man was the good doctor.
"Dr. Megalomanovich?," said I.
"Who else were you expecting in Dr. Megalomanovich's office?"
"No one. I mean you, but, but—"
"You have only seen my younger self. Likely from my exploits in producing that wondrous strain of cow which produces delicious Sassy Cola."
"I know you from more than just that."
"I don't know why, all my other stuff had nothing to do with Sassy Cola."
He ripped some of the cymold off the wall with one of his olive green gloved hands. Beneath it is barren rock, half-digested by the lithovorous cymold.
"I mean, the antimatter-powered life thing was pretty neat," said I.
"Pretty neat? PRETTY NEAT?!?"
I shrank in my seat and whimpered, "Yeah."
"I'll show you neat my boy. Follow me through the teleporter!"
Rubber fingers pressed a sequence on the door's keypad with inhuman speed. The metal door dissolved away and only a teleporter field remained.
For those who've not seen the new 2D intrabrane teleporters—or thresholds as their called—you're in for a treat. Not only are they compact and have ranges up to a light year, but they allow light to pass through so you can see where the hell you're going. Not all light; hard ultraviolet and above get filtered out as do large energy differences. So if you're traveling from a paradise planet to a spaceship and that spaceship's warp drive has an oopsie, the 1 billion kelvin nuclear fireball won't char your burgers.
We weren't traveling to a paradise planet, at least not in the traditional sense. To a neogeneticist like myself it was heavenly.
I noted three things when I first stepped through. 1, the whole environment was bathed in the orange light of a red dwarf star. 2, the environment was divided between land—the cliffside we were standing on—and a bubbling black sea of what turned out to be Sassy Cola stretching toward the horizon. 3, the animals.
I don't know why the animals stood out to me over what I assumed were plants. They weren't actually plants but a form of lichen—but, but, but the prejudice toward the animals was still there. In fairness, they were pretty enigmatic. One of them crawled along the ground with a head that was entirely tongue, licking up the lichen bulbs like pieces of candy. Another one looked like a tree, but on closer inspection was an amphibious anemone, its roots sunk into the shallow sea's floor and its tentacles reaching out of the water to grasp a third creature—a bird of some kind whose flight was aided by gas bags on its underbelly.
"Behold, my masterpiece," said Dr. Megalomanovich.
"It's beautiful beyond words," said I. "How did it come about?"
"By way of 120 years' hard labor. Shortly after my Sassy Cow achieved galactic fame, The Board granted me with a research installation of my own. In return, I was to do the impossible: abiogenesis."
"To create life from nonlife."
"Yes."
"You had gotten close with the antimatter metabolism trial."
"Indeed I had. And that is why I refused to take any hand-me-down help from Earth's biota. From the beginning I wanted my life to run differently. I couldn't find a way to replace carbon as the backbone, but I was able to swap out water for Sassy Cola."
"You're telling me that in every cell of every one of these creatures is Sassy Cola?"
"It is their water."
"How?"
"Do you have a few years?"
"Yes."
"Unfortunately, I don't. Even this little jaunt is wasting my precious time."
"Speaking of time, how did they grow so fast?"
"Accelerated evolution through computer-aided keystone transcription errors."
"What?"
"Again, I don't have years to waste teaching you. I waste enough time teaching the installation's staff."
"When do you plan on showing your masterpiece to the wider galaxy?"
"My masterpiece will show itself to the galaxy when it is ready. There is no doubt in my mind that a day will come when a creature on this world will take a rock and bash it against the head of another and say 'eureka!' before pondering the philosophical implications of taking a life."
"Anything is possible when your body is 70 % Sassy Cola."
The Bimillennial Celebration
Upon receiving the invitation, I couldn't wait to go to the Bimillennial Celebration at Sol, though I did worry how I'd be received in turn. Few humans outside my corner of space had ever met a nonhuman sapient before. It didn't help that I lacked so much as a species name to give them.
If it were up to me, I'd name us astrographically, by the planet we live on. In that case we would be called the Sasserines after Planet Sasser. It's not a good moniker; too nationalistic when our distinguishing characteristic is first and foremost biological. So I dropped the case and made it sasserine. Yes, much better. It's less proper, more grounded, more biological. It is this species name that I used in my travels.
The first stop on my journey was at the derelict Research Installation #544. Humans abandoned it long ago when the Sassy Cola Company's fortunes took a turn for the worse. Now it was kept up by us sasserines as a heritage site. I left a bouquet on The Good Doctor's shrine, shed a few sticky tears and moved on. The tiny warpship I had chartered had an impatient pilot.
That pilot turned into quite an annoyance during our two weeks together, for he asked questions that became more and more inappropriate with time. I'm not one to disparage curiosity—I'm a scientist after all—but I fail to see the scientific necessity of revealing which variety of Sassy Cola I urinate.
My next stop was Rigel, a blue giant star that shined 1 million times brighter than Sasser's red dwarf. Since Sassy Cola's monopoly of both power and soda had waned, I found many other brands on offering, including one called Flash Cola. Flash's slogan summarized its claim to fame: "Resist the Sass and Drink a Flash!" I briefly wondered what Sasser's biosphere would look like if it were based on Flash Cola instead of Sassy Cola. I purged this thought experiment from my mind upon realizing that the planet would likely be named Flasher and we the flasherines.
Onward to Sol by way of Aldebaran. This leg was much more pleasant than the last as I had booked a room aboard one of the last functioning warpships of Sassy Cruise Lines. Luxury abounded and even my rational mind almost succumbed to the temptation of using the rest of my money to stay aboard til death. But such an act would break the terms of the invitation.
Sol, the most ancient and most populous star in settled space, was the venue for the greatest party ever thrown by humanity. Derelict Sassy Cola freighters had each been converted into a single light bulb and arranged by the hundreds to create a sign at Neptune's distance from the sun reading, "2,000 SASSY YEARS!"
I'm not normally a party person. Secluded reading is my pastime of choice. Yet I couldn't help but crack a Sassy with every human who asked me to join them. Why not?, I thought. After all, without the Sassy Cola Company, I wouldn't be alive.
The solar system felt like it held the totality of settled space within its borders. Port Vesta alone held hundreds of distinct cultural groups from just as many star systems. I met 35 of them on my 5 kilometer walk from Sassy Cruise Lines' designated dock to the hotel where I was to be staying. Sassy Cola's monolithic corporate culture was no longer humanity's culture. People were being themselves again.
And that included being suspicious of outsiders, especially ones from a different tree of life.
I felt eyes all around me. I had drunk too much Sassy Cola, besting even the worst human junkies. I sweat the drink. I urinated the drink. Boys and girls inspected me like a zoo animal every time I went to one of Port Vesta's many street markets. It overwhelmed me and I left early for my meeting on Earth.
Orbital space around humanity's homeworld is so congested with infrastructure that teleporter range around Earth is limited, by law, to a mere 1,000 kilometers, 1 billionth of what it is everywhere else. To get to the planet's surface I had to leapfrog from orbital plate to orbital plate, often having to cross a single plate by way of a couple teleports. Yes, they are that large. Most contain surface areas and populations similar to Earth's 21st century nations-states. After visiting 57 nation-state-orbital-plates against my will, I arrived at Earth's surface.
At least I had reached the top surface. Earth is a shellworld with 15 surfaces, each named after a variety of Sassy Cola. I was on Sassy Orange and needed to get down to Sassy Cola Classic, 7 surfaces below. Teleportation law was even stricter here than in orbit. The technology was used exclusively to ferry people between surface levels and teleporters only existed in the atlas towers which held the next surface.
I was awestruck upon first seeing an atlas tower as they occur nowhere but Earth. From green pasture it rose into the cloud cover above. Through those clouds, ten kilometers up, lay gigatons of diamond hard plating topped with teratons of granite, soil, lakes, rivers and cities. I was under a planet-encapsulating house held up by countless pylons, themselves kept rigid only as long as the power flowed. Luckily, it always did.
The atlas towers also serve as propagandistic monuments, each shaped like a bottle of Sassy, though of the variety which matches the name of the surface level they exist on. The Sassy Cola Company had its detractors, but the fact that the corporate superpower had built Earth into what it is today went unquestioned.
I eventually arrived at surface level 7, or Sassy Cola Classic. The 7 surfaces above had replaced Earth's original troposphere and stratosphere. The 7 surfaces below existed where the planet's crust once did. Together, the 15 shells supported 20 trillion humans living in spacious luxury—though no one had more spacious luxury than The Board.
Their 1 billion hectare estate is a combination art piece, capital, pilgrimage site and tomb. No teleporters exist within its borders. The atlas towers there are disguised as steep mountains on their bottom halves and cumulonimbus clouds columns on their tops.
Dwarfed by these gigantic illusions are the many castles of the estate. One of these castles serves as the estate's north entrance and holds the Sassy Parliament Building. In here convene two houses, a lower house elected by the Sassy Cola Company's 100 trillion shareholders across settled space and an upper house chosen by The Board.
The lower house had drawn up the invitation program and voted 67,306 to 32,694 to pass it. The upper house hesitated, unsure whether they wanted "billions of yokels trampling through the estate." They passed it with the exact bare minimum of votes, 600 to 300.
The addition of a clause limiting it to 10,000 "yokels" that came in tour groups of 50 per hour was the deciding factor in passing the invitation program. Now I was part of one of those groups, an ordinary ambassador for the world of Sasser, though I doubted that cultural and economic exchange, two bullet point motives of the program, were occuring.
Oh well, I thought as I boarded the maglev train to the next destination.
The nine members of The Board lived in nine penthouses atop nine towers near the center of the estate. I'd remark on the penthouses' reported opulence if 200 stories of height and the estate's no-cameras policy hadn't isolated us from them. I imagine they like it up there, otherwise I can't fathom why they'd live so secluded from the rest of their species. I wondered what such recluses thought of Planet Sasser and the sasserines or the invitation sent to me by their personally selected managers. But I'd little time to ponder as the maglev neared my stop.
At the very center of the estate sits a diamondoid hemisphere 10 kilometers in diameter. Inside exists a full recreation of one late 21st century American small town. The maglev line terminated at the entrance to the dome where a bright green sign reading "Tupelo" hung.
The rest of the tour group was just as in awe as I when we walked inside and found ourselves surrounded by single family homes along four lane roads with no sidewalks. From the artificial blue sky above came laser beams which generated holograms of moving vehicles. They veered around our group even though the lasers would cause nothing worse than a slight tingle on the skin. A human dressed in a law enforcement uniform of the time led us to the predetermined sacred sites.
First we stopped at the hospital where The Founder was born, then the double wide trailer where The Founder grew up and, finally, the soda shop where The Founder introduced the world to Sassy Cola in 2085.
I obsessed over this last stop. Burned into my psyche is the memory of the artificial sun rays shining through the shop's stained glass windows and onto the stainless steel counter. I took in every scent and sound and touch; the bittersweet sassafras laying in sacks in the corner, the scratching of our shoes on the artificially cracked and yellowed linoleum floor and the coolness of the counter on my cheek when I laid my head down in defiance of the guide's orders.
At the end we all had a thimble full of Sassy Cola made from the recreated soda jerk. It was inferior to every drop of Sassy that I'd drunk since birth. Even my blood, filled with the wastes of cellular respiration, likely tasted better.
But taste alone didn't determine the value of this thimble. The drink represented conception, its serving the initialization of the two millennia of change that followed. Just as water was a prerequisite for all Earth life, so Sassy Cola was a prerequisite for all life on Sasser.
This soda was the origin of everything I am. I believe that's cause for celebration.

2023.03.25 22:23 Noy2222 Bad Actors
Title: Bad Actors
Genre: Action-Comedy
Logline: When the CIA suspects that a theater production is a front for a terrorist organization, two bumbling agents must go undercover as actors to infiltrate the troupe, but they soon find themselves entangled in a world of high-stakes drama, both on and off the stage.
Synopsis: "Bad Actors" follows the misadventures of CIA operatives, Agent Jack Hartman and Agent Susan Miller, who are assigned to investigate the Shining Star Theater Company, a traveling theater troupe that the CIA suspects is a cover for a terrorist organization plotting a major attack on US soil.
Jack and Susan are not your typical CIA agents—Jack is a charismatic but clumsy field agent with a flair for the dramatic, while Susan is a highly analytical desk agent who's more comfortable behind a computer than in the spotlight. Together, they must step out of their comfort zones and join the cast of the theater company's latest production, a Shakespearean tragedy titled "The Doomsday Masquerade."
As they navigate their way through auditions, rehearsals, and performances, Jack and Susan must balance their roles as actors with their mission to uncover the truth about the terrorist plot. Along the way, they encounter a colorful cast of characters, including the eccentric and secretive director, the prima donna leading lady, the diva-like stage manager, and the enigmatic playwright who may or may not be the mastermind behind the plot.
As opening night approaches, Jack and Susan find themselves embroiled in a series of unexpected twists and turns that blur the lines between fiction and reality. They discover that not all is as it seems at the Shining Star Theater Company, and they must race against time to stop the terrorist plot before the final curtain falls.
"Bad Actors" is a show that combines the high-stakes tension of a spy thriller with the humor and hijinks of a classic comedy. Filled with action, intrigue, and plenty of theatrical antics, this show will keep viewers on the edge of their seats, laughing one moment and gasping the next.
From botched line readings to daring stunts, from dramatic confrontations to unexpected romances, "Bad Actors" is a show that takes center stage in the world of espionage and entertainment. In the end, Jack and Susan learn that being undercover actors is no easy feat, and that in the world of theater, the show must go on—no matter what the cost.
Tagline: "Espionage and entertainment collide in a high-stakes performance where the spotlight is on saving the world."

The Leading Lady - Lupita Nyong'o Description: The prima donna leading lady of the theater company's latest production. Title: "A Midspring Night's Scheme" (Episode 1, "Bad Actors")
Synopsis: In the bustling city of Washington, D.C., we are introduced to the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) headquarters, where Agent Jack Hartman is receiving an urgent briefing on a potential terrorist threat. Jack, a charming but clumsy field agent, listens intently as his superiors inform him of suspicious activity linked to the Shining Star Theater Company, a traveling troupe that's set to perform in the city.
The CIA suspects that the theater company is a front for a shadowy terrorist organization, and they believe the group is plotting a major attack on U.S. soil. However, with no concrete evidence to justify a raid, the CIA must take a more discreet approach—sending agents undercover to infiltrate the theater troupe and gather intelligence.
Enter Agent Susan Miller, an analytical and introverted desk agent who's more accustomed to data analysis than fieldwork. Susan is surprised and apprehensive when she's paired with Jack for this mission. Despite her reluctance, she's determined to prove her capabilities.
To gain access to the theater company, Jack and Susan pose as aspiring actors and audition for roles in the troupe's latest production, "The Doomsday Masquerade," a Shakespearean tragedy. Jack, with his natural flair for the dramatic, lands a supporting role with ease. Susan, on the other hand, struggles with stage fright, but her quick thinking during a botched audition earns her a spot as an understudy.
As they immerse themselves in the world of theater, Jack and Susan meet a colorful cast of characters, including the enigmatic director who's passionate about his craft, the prima donna leading lady who demands perfection, and the suspicious playwright who seems to have ulterior motives.
As rehearsals commence, Jack and Susan must navigate the challenges of their undercover roles, including memorizing lines, handling prop mishaps, and managing backstage drama—all while keeping their true identities a secret. Tensions rise as they attempt to gather intel, and they soon discover that the theater is filled with hidden clues, coded messages, and a sense of unease.
As the episode draws to a close, Jack and Susan witness a cryptic exchange between the director and the playwright. The pair realize they've stumbled upon something much larger and more dangerous than they initially anticipated. With the curtain rising on opening night in just a few weeks, they know the clock is ticking on their mission.
The stage is set, the players are in place, and the agents must prepare for a high-stakes performance where the script is riddled with deception and intrigue. As the episode ends, we're left with a sense of anticipation for the dramatic and comedic twists that await in the episodes to come.

2023.03.25 22:22 AltruisticEnd9 Postseason Paths: Lessons from Denver Sports Teams
TL;DR: We should want all the smoke! Stop trying to scheme ways to avoid teams. Greatness comes from overcoming adversity in the playoffs.
As the postseason approaches, a lot of the discourse has now turned to how we hope the standings in the West will shake out. Much of the focus has been on crafting the easiest path possible for the Nuggets to win a championship, and maybe even figuring out if we can intentionally lose games to manipulate the standings. Personally, I think this is a mistake.
Look, I get it. Nugglyfe has sucked. The Nuggets postseason history consists of a lot of first round exits and four losses for the conference championship. We are the most successful NBA franchise to never make the Finals. This is the best Nuggets team we've ever had and we don't want to lose. The playoffs are scary. I'm getting anxious just thinking about it.
But I desperately want for us to play the best teams and the best players possible, and especially the teams that we already have a history with. I want to play a fully healthy Lebron-led Lakers team in the first round. I want to play a fully healthy KD-led Suns, Kwahi-led Clippers, or dynasty Warriors team in the second and third rounds, depending on which of those teams finish four, five, and six. And then I want to play the Bucks in the Finals. Those five teams have every Finals MVP since 2011 Dirk. BRING THEM ON!
To be clear, we could certainly lose. Hell we'd probably be underdogs against some of those teams. But the very best part of being a sports fan is when your team takes on playoff adversity and overcomes it; when we knock off reigning champions and topple dynasties; when we shut up all of the haters and doubters forever.
I'll go through the postseason history of the other Denver sports teams to illustrate this. Let yourself remember what these were like. In every example, a group of guys came together to play for each other and represent us. The entire city of Denver became electric and connected. And six times, a trophy was raised in front of a sprawling crowd of half a million people in Civic Center Park.
The Championships:
1996 Avs- This season is a bit of an anomaly, with the Avs winning a championship in their first year in Denver. We were the second seed with 104 points, and the playoff path included six-game wins over the Canucks and Blackhawks in the first two rounds, with a dominant four game sweep over the Panthers for the Cup. But the crowning achievement that I will forever love about this team is that we beat the Red Wings in six games in the Western Conference Finals. The 1996 Red Wings had one of the greatest regular seasons of all time with 131 points (!), but the Avs slammed the door shut on them. This series also kicked off the Avs v Red Wings rivalry from 1996-2002, which is one of the greatest rivalries of all-time in professional team sports, if not the greatest.
1997 Broncos- It might be easy to forget now, but this was a fantastic playoff run. Due to a brutal last-second Week 12 loss to Kansas City, the Broncos were a wild-card team with a 12-4 record. We easily dispatched the Jaguars in the first game, avenging the loss from the previous year. Then we beat the first seed Chiefs on the road in a game where we were outplayed, but not outmatched. We defeated the Jerome Bettis Steelers on the road. Then we took down the reigning champion Brett Favre/Reggie White Packers in a superb Super Bowl. We were 11 point underdogs. We were only the second wild card team to win the Super Bowl at the time. We ended the NFC's 13 years of crushing dominance. But Terrell Davis ran for 157 yards and 3 TD's and we beat them. John Elway finally got his ring.
1998 Broncos- I think this is the exception that proves the rule. After a regular season where we started 13-0, we were the number one seed and big favorites. In the playoffs, we dominated against inferior competition. We beat the Dan Marino Dolphins, but they weren't great and we won 38-3. We beat the Bill Parcells Jets, but they had six turnovers and gave away the game. Then we beat the Falcons in a game that was never close. BUT, we could have played one of the greatest offensive teams of all time in the Randy Moss Vikings that year. Now we'll never know who would have won that hypothetical Super Bowl. I obviously think that we would have, but we don't know. Instead we played Chris Chandler and the freshly arrested Eugene Robinson. Believe me, I'm not trying to diminish this championship at all. It was amazing that Elway got to walk off as back-to-back champion. But I'm just saying that the 1997 Super Bowl means a lot more to me.
2001 Avs- This team was magisterial. In the regular season, the Avs won the President's Trophy, Joe Sakic won the Hart Trophy, and we had six of the twelve starting All-Stars after we picked up Rob Blake. In retrospect, I'm a little bummed that we didn't play the Red Wings in the playoffs this year. BUT, this team still faced adversity in the playoffs. After sweeping the Canucks, we beat a scrappy Kings team in a grueling seven-game series. We avoided the Stars in the conference finals, instead beating the Blues in five games. BUT, then we were treated to one of the best Stanley Cup Finals of all time against the reigning champion dynasty Devils. It was Patrick Roy v Martin Brodeur, arguably the two greatest goalies of all time. Both teams were the number one seed in their conference, the only time that's happened since 1989. The series went a full seven games. It was absolutely sensational. And Sakic handing the Cup to Ray Bourque is unambiguously one of the greatest moments in sports history.
2015 Broncos- This season sucked lol. But honestly, it's probably my favorite. A disappointing 2014 finish led to a head coaching change. Peyton Manning's clearly deteriorating body caused him to have the worst season of his career and he missed six games. But thanks to one of the greatest defenses ever, the Broncos entered the playoffs as the one seed. Then we went on what should be heralded as one of the best postseason runs ever. We came from behind with eleven points in the last three minutes to beat the Big Ben Steelers. In the final chapter of Manning v Brady, we won the AFC Championship over the reigning champion dynasty Patriots in a game that came down to a defensive stop on a last-second failed two point conversion attempt. This might have been the greatest game of Gronk's career and we still beat them. Then we emphatically smacked down the 15-1 MVP Cam Newton Panthers, with Von Miller's two strips sacks essentially winning the game. Nobody picked us to win, and I mean nobody. But we were better and we won. DeMarcus Ware finally got his ring, Von Miller is a Bronco forever, and Peyton Manning got to walk off as a champion. Pure unadulterated greatness.
2022 Avs- My god, how fun was this run? Entering the playoffs as one seed with 119 points (but not the President's Trophy), the Avs were favored to win the West. But there was still A LOT of adversity to overcome. After handily sweeping the Matt Duchene Predators, the Avs played the tough physical, recent champion, Ryan O'Reilly Blues in the second round, where we had lost three straight years. Then the series became about so much more with the Binnington nonsense. The Game 4 Nazem Kadri hat trick, and the love we gave him back home in Game 5, will always hold a special place for me. Then Darren Helm's last-second series-winning goal was the most incredible combination of elation and relief. We swept the Oilers in a fun conference finals. Then we took on the two-time reigning champion (arguably dynasty) Lightning in an incredible Stanley Cup finals, with Kadri coming back from injury to get the overtime game-winning goal in the pivotal Game 4. Kadri is an Av forever, MacKinnon and Landeskog finally got their rings, and Cale Makar might be the best defensemen ever.
Lesson- All championships are amazing and incredible and wonderful. But they are even just a little bit better when your team faces adversity, takes on your rivals, and beats the best players on the best teams.
Won the Conference, Lost the Championship:
1977 Broncos- Craig Morton and the Orange Crush Defense went on a magical run through the Bradshaw/Steel Curtain dynasty Steelers and the John Madden reigning champion Oakland Raiders, before losing to the Staubach/Doomsday Defense Dallas Cowboys. This set the foundation for the Broncos to become such a successful franchise.
1986/1987/1989 Broncos- THE DRIVE. THE FUMBLE. John Elway still officially owns the city of Cleveland. There were other playoff games, including wins over the Patriots, Oilers, and Steelers, and Super Bowl losses to the Phil Simms Giants, Joe Gibbs R*dskins, and Montana/Rice dynasty 49ers, respectively. But all that matters now are the three insane, mythical, and historic AFC Championship wins over the Browns. The entire city of Cleveland didn't recover until 2016.
2007 Rockies- ROCKTOBER! The history of the Rockies has been bad. But in a month for the ages, they won 21 of 22 games and swept seven playoff games to win the NL pennant. No team had swept two playoff series like that before. And it included beating the Phillies, who won the 2008 World Series and the 2009 NL pennant. This was the crowning achievement for our boy Todd Helton, who'd better be in the mf-ing HOF next year. The Rockies were swept by the David Ortiz (arguably dynasty) Red Sox in the World Series, but that's not what I remember about this season.
2013 Broncos- After the most ridiculously amazing regular season of offensive football ever, we went into the playoffs as the one seed and presumptive favorites. Then we took on division rival Philip Rivers Chargers and dynasty Tom Brady Patriots. The Broncos mostly controlled both games, but had to withstand furious fourth-quarter comeback attempts. Another chapter was added to Manning v Brady, one of the greatest personal rivalries in the history of team sports. Everything went wrong in the Super Bowl, but I don't think that diminishes the greatness of this season.
Lesson- Rings culture is dumb and greatness can come in many forms, including overcoming playoff adversity to win your conference.
Bitter, Terrible, Awful, Crushing Defeats:
1996 Broncos- Thanks to the emergence of Terrell Davis, the Broncos were the number one seed all year and were widely expected to win the Super Bowl. But they were beaten in the first game by the Jaguars, who were only in the second year of their existence. This was an historic and cataclysmic loss. BUT, this loss was a huge part of what propelled the team forward to back-to-back championships.
1997/2002 Avs- Unbelievably frustrating losses to the Red Wings in the Western Conference finals. The Red Wings would go on to win the Stanley Cups both years. But the best rivalries pit greatness against greatness, with each side winning some and losing some.
2012 Broncos- I'm not going to lie, this one still hurts. After the year of Tebow and the magnificent overtime win by Demaryius Thomas (RIP brother), the Broncos became Peyton Manning's team. The most balanced team of the Manning-as-a-Bronco era went into the playoffs as the number one seed, having won eleven games in a row. In what was objectively an incredible game, and subjectively the worst game ever, we lost to the Ravens in the first game. Ugh I can still see Rahim Moore's outstretched arm. The Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl.
2021 Avs- After two second round exits that were fairly excusable for one reason or another, the Avs entered the playoffs with the President's Trophy and a four game sweep of the Blues in the first round. In the second round, the Avs went up 2-0 on the Vegas Golden Knights and looked ready to roll. But then they lost four straight games. There were no excuses. We just lost. God this one stung. Then the Knights didn't even win the next round either. BUT, this loss was a huge part of what propelled the team forward to the Cup last year.
Lesson- It's entirely possible that your team could suffer a catastrophic loss in the first round. We could have a disappointing loss in the second round. We could lose the conference championship, and it could even be to a bitter rival. BUT THAT IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY.
Nuggets Outlook:
The championship window is wide open for at least 3-5 years, if not much longer. We have the greatest basketball player in the world. Jokic is only now entering his prime and he'll be a Nugget until he retires. We have an incredible starting five that is arguably the best in the league. Jamal is 26, signed for three years, and probably isn't going anywhere either. MPJ is 24 and signed for five years. Aaron Gordon is 27 and signed for four years (player option in fourth year). KCP is 30 and signed for the three years (player option is third year). No matter what happens this postseason, it will not be the end of their story.
This core is also already battle-tested. We've gone through the bubble run, making history by coming back from two 3-1 deficits. Bubble Jamal against the Jazz might have been the greatest first round in NBA history. We overcame peak Damian Lillard without Jamal two years ago. We took a game off of the dynasty Warriors with a frontcourt of Facu and Austin Rivers last year. This. Team. Is. Very. Very. Very. Good. I have no doubt that this team has the talent and experience to win a championship.
Bottom Line: Believe in this team. Do not stop believing when we face adversity. Embrace the doubt and the anxiety and the pain, because it makes the summit that much sweeter. We cannot control who we play in these playoffs. But we should want to take on the best players on the best teams, so that we can take them on and beat them. Denver teams are winners. We can win. We will win. I believe.

2023.03.25 21:06 Technique005 28/PST/PC - Looking for a hangout group
Hello,
I am looking around to find some friends to hang out with, specifically interesting in playing games and watching each other streams or watch a TV show or anime over discord, maybe talk about books or anything they heard of recently. Multiplayer games I play are Age of empires 2 DE, FFXIV (Aether data center), Modded Minecraft (MC eternal/Engmatica 2), Monster hunter rise, Titanfall 2, Path of exile, OSRS, Forza horizon 5 and total war warhammer 3. If anything the only things I don't play are MOBAs, sports and Battle Royale games.
I almost down to stream on discord for people to just want to watch some gameplay and talk about whatever. Something about me real quick. I like collecting art books and have a crazy pin collection from conventions, most from Pax west and comic con finding whatever looks amazing or rare. If interested leave a message or dm me!

This whole development is remarkably hard to explain to people not already familiar with the particular highschool robotics programs involved, so here’s our best shot at summarizing.

Circa 1992, eccentric Segway billionaire Dean Kamen figured that America needed more students to go into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). To achieve this end, he founded the nonprofit For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, commonly abbreviated as FIRST.
To achieve Dean’s goal, FIRST decided to model a highschool robotics competition after a class the late Woodie Flowers taught at MIT. In this competition, hereafter referred to as the FIRST Robotics Competition or FRC, highschool students and adult mentors would work together for six weeks to construct a robot. This robot will then perform a series of game tasks (that change year to year) in 3v3 competition matches to try and score the most points. These competitions usually have a qualification match pool and an elimination bracket.
Despite the competitive element, the community values inter-team cooperation and sharing resources, as at the end of the day, the value is in student growth and development rather than trophies and banners. This sense of competitiveness without toxicity often gets thrown under Woodie’s favorite slogan of “gracious professionalism.”
The robotics competition element is something better shown rather than told, so here's the kickoff video for the 2022 season and here’s the final match of said season where you can see the robots themselves go.
The online FRC community is centered around ChiefDelphi, an early 2000s PHP forum converted to Discourse, and the FRC Discord, which mostly spectated events (a common theme of any dramatic happening in the FRC community). Much of the discourse around this story happens on ChiefDelphi.
Innovation First International
In the early years of FRC, Dean Kamen’s approach towards creating the initial set of teams was to go around to various engineering firms and academic institutions to get them to create teams with their employees to mentor them. Examples include the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Xerox, and Renesslaer Polytechnic Institute, but also a particular E-Systems Inc (now part of Raytheon). This company would then start a team in Greenville, Texas (now known as FRC 148, the Robowranglers) and get two local employees to mentor it. With their help, the team would go on to win the 1993 National Championship, and the two employees, Tony Norman and Bob Mimlich, would realize they worked really well together.
This partnership would become the company known as Innovation First International. They would mass produce control electronics for FRC robots in these early years, and would additionally produce server racks in collaboration with Dell under the subsidiary RackSolutions, Inc. as seen on Linus Tech Tips. (They use that video everywhere on their website, by the way). Additionally, they would create the Vex line of classroom robot kits, the more widely recognizable Hexbug brand, and miniature Battlebots models marketed under the Hexbug and Vex brand. While different divisions, they mix employees and generally all still report to IFI’s CEO. IFI’s culture is more or less unified across all their divisions, for worse or worse.
Over the years, their FRC-specific product lines (under the brand VexPro) have also included various gears, wheels, pre-drilled metal structure, and motors, and they have become an established vendor in a small industry that has popped up around selling parts specifically to build FRC robots as part of what we call the Commercial Off-The Shelf (COTS) Revolution. No longer does a team need to machine their own wheels and gears to compete – they can simply place orders online and have them shipped to their workshop.
The Vex Robotics Competition and RECF
The Vex Robotics Competition or VRC is a competition that IFI has significant involvement in. Basically, it’s a competition a lot like FRC, except with much smaller robots (they must fit in 18”/45.72 cm sizing cubes) that are built almost entirely out of the IFI-designed and produced Vex kit of parts. The Vex kit of parts is a lot like an Erector set, except if the parts were designed to be used to make robots.
The Vex Robotics Competition is run by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, (RECF), a nonprofit set up by primarily IFI for financial reasons — easier to get other companies to sponsor STEM competitions if the money’s going to a tax deductible 501(c)3 organization, after all. (protip: if you have a robotics team, make a 501(c)3)
Now, RECF claims independence from IFI, but practically speaking, this is debatable. Until recently, they even had the IFI CEO Tony Norman on their board of directors, and have historically had many prominent VEX employees at pretty much every level of their organization, from event volunteers all the way through their leadership. Their facilities even have an IFI logo on the floor, which they have recently bought a literal rug to cover up.
The Falcon 500
Sometime in late 2019, IFI’s VexPro brand would announce a new motor for the FRC market: the Falcon 500, or the “only motor you’ll ever need.” Its integrated motor controller made it one of the smallest motor + controller combinations on the market, while being lighter and more powerful* than its rivals. It even advertised this cool “Field Oriented Control” feature, that would totally not get released 3 years later behind a DLC paywall. But to say people were hyped about this was an understatement. After a quick confirmation that programming them would be the same as the previous motor controllers, teams were racing to spend the $140/motor, with a team pre-ordering 45 in one go.
Despite some shipping delays, the Falcons would eventually ship. And indeed, they were good motors…when they worked. On February 11, 2020 a user posted a video to ChiefDelphi of their Falcon 500 making a weird noise. Further posts of similar reports soon cropped up, and it was soon discovered that what had happened was the screws that held the motor’s output shaft had all become loose — in a few instances, they became so loose they rubbed onto other parts of the motor, destroying it as it tried to turn. One common cause of these issues were that sometimes, the motor’s screws would not have threadlocker applied when they should’ve – an often blue substance you add to screws to make them not loosen.
While VEX would eventually address these complaints, despite their assurances of fixing QC, these issues would persist in the 3 years hence. They would even sell kits that would help fix some of these issues. While teams still bought Falcons because they were good, there was building frustration with needing to make sure each motor you got was built correctly.
The open letter and IFI’s Glassdoor
On November 3, 2022, an alumni posted a thread to ChiefDelphi making a long post about the continuous QC issues both his former team and the wider community had encountered with VexPro products like the Falcon 500, the fact that VexPro sold fixes for their broken products, and finally recounted an incident where VexPro sent too much of a particular product and charged his team for it unless they were returned. This is illegal according to the Federal Trade Chall-sorry, Commission, but they didn't fight it because of the intimidation factor of going after a vendor they relied on to build their robot.
However, the greater FRC community didn't just see the thread as an opportunity to vent about exploding Falcons or poor sales practices. People saw it as an opportunity to dig into IFI itself.
In particular, the first link in the thread was to IFI’s Glassdoor page — a mix of some good reviews that were superficially short and some genuinely horrific ones. Some highlights include:
- "Toxic work environment"
- "Bullying management culture"
- "DANGEROUS culture for women… genuine harassment happens frequently"
- "Discrimination happens all the time"
- "Unless you are homophobic, like to abuse people, and are a cisgendered white man, you won’t be welcomed here."
- "Fear-based management structure"
- "Misogynistic executive level"
- "Textbook sexual harassment suit waiting to happen"
Now, this Glassdoor has actually been a bit of an open secret in the community for a while. And indeed, initial reactions point out the sampling bias a website like Glassdoor has — favoring people with strong opinions one way or the other to make a post.
And people had been more defensive of IFI in the past. On one past instance of discussing IFI’s ethics (in particular how they were flying employees on a private jet for golf trips in late 2020, mid COVID pandemic with no masks in sight), a certain [Lead Mentor] would say, "Tony Norman has personally made your life better, and you didn’t know it."
But something was different this time — a former VEX employee came forth and said:
To those here who are commenting about the Glassdoor reviews, as an ex VEX employee, I will openly state that the culture was sexist and homophobic. Folks openly made some racist jokes at the time and during my time there, I saw plenty of gaslighting, horrific behavior from management, and was gaslit myself specifically by my boss at the time.
This credence given to the Glassdoor posts would be the spark that lit the gasoline-soaked fire pit. Conversation shifted away from initial posts on VEX’s QC issues to ditching VEX products and the ethics of where FRC teams put their money. But more importantly, it paved the way for more stories to come out.
The floodgates open.
One well-respected mentor shared a story where he had recommended a recent female alumni of his team for a Vex internship, to which a (then?) current Vex employee warned in an email,
I’m not sure how well someone from an all girls robotics team will fit in with the ‘boy’s club’ we have going on here. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for breaking it up… and maybe this is the best way to do it, I just don’t want her to be uncomfortable with the situation.
An anonymous user posted "I was at VEX. I was bullied." and described in detail the deleterious effect of that bullying on their mental health. Later, they followed up with more information.
More damning and detailed posts would come out. One post detailed his experience as an intern at HEXBUG, discussing how:
- IFI hired interns and co-ops for cost reasons
- IFI management encouraged female interns to go to dinner with Tony Norman for their own career prospects
- Employees being berated by Tony for filing complaints to """HR"""
- Various threats of violence and abuse
- Tony celebrating a divorce in the office followed by tracking his ex-wife’s car
This was soon followed up by another prominent former VEX employee who detailed his own traumatic experiences, detailing how:
- …Tony Norman and those around him constantly harassed female employees
- …Tony would also just harass everyone else on "personal appearance, intelligence or [perceived] productivity"
- …booze and firearm-filled parties hosted by Tony were implicitly mandatory for career growth at IFI
- …an executive aimed a .45 gun at his back while working a long weekend, thinking he was an intruder, commenting "I do not know what would have happened that day had I not heard this executive announce their presence."
- …IFI’s preferred hotel in China when managing overseas manufacturing happened to be one busted for human trafficking
- …"Guaranteed" bonuses were just tools of financial retaliation by Tony if you stepped out of line
- …IFI’s own "Girl-Powered" initiatives aimed at promoting women within their own Vex robotics competition were just virtue signaling
- …said Vex Robotics Competition was definitely racially profiling teams at their events for checking that teams were adhering to competition rules
Of particular note is that this post ends with a contact email of [email protected][personal website.com]. Also not stated was how said employee ended up hospitalized from the sheer stress of working there, which a close friend in a followup post detailed.
A few other IFI employees would share their inputs. Each of these blockquotes are different people.
As a former IFI intern myself, I’m disheartened to see just how futile the efforts of those inside to fix the company were. Educational robotics should be one of the best places to work given how high reward the products’ potential impact is. It’s a shame that we’re at this point today.
I’m not ready to speak about my experiences here, as the road to recovery is a long and personal one that I’m still working my way through. But I do want to validate everyone who has spoken anonymously or openly about their experiences, your courage is awe-inspiring. Don’t let anyone cast any doubt on anyone’s experiences and trauma; what they went through was very real.
I was not enough of a part of the “in crowd” at IFI to have to deal with much of the toxicity, but it was there to see and hear in rumor around the office. The stories and experiences told here should be enough, but I’m sure anyone who worked there could go on…
The treatment was not just at IFI, the treatment came over to RECF, saw good people get hurt time and time again, including I who was a target by power hungry staff because I just did what I was told to keep things running smoothly, while still to this day allowed to be involved. I saw what protecting me was doing to my colleague and friend, and it was destroying him.
Initial community reactions
ChiefDelphi and #TeamIFI
To say that teams were appalled would be an understatement. Many teams immediately committed right then and there to phase out Vex products — even the powerhouse teams sponsored by IFI as influencers in the community as part of #TeamIFI. For context, these are some of the highest performing teams in the world. FRC team 254, the Cheesy Poofs, for example, has the most World Championship wins to their name of any team, while the others regularly make Einstein, the last final bracket that leads to Championship Finals.
Out of the 9 elite #TeamIFI teams, all but 2 of them would soon announce they were dropping IFI’s sponsorship and planning to divest their products. The first of these teams to drop, FRC 1678 Citrus Circuits, was at an offseason competition the weekend they announced their divestment and rumor has it they had taped over the IFI sponsor logo on their robot mid-event.
The two teams that remained, 148 and 3310, are very intertwined with IFI financially and mentor-wise, so it was expected they would not leave as it would likely kill their teams. They're likely equally worried about the question, "What if IFI leaves us?"
VexForums
The Vex Robotics Competition also has an online Discourse instance, called the VexForums, and they had been tracking the developments on ChiefDelphi closely given that their main competition has been run by IFI, and several of the former employees who came forward also posted their accounts on VexForums as well. They were also pretty upset too. Similarly to FRC, products sold for their competition also had massive QC issues and hostile business practices, such as batches of the only legal motor for their competition dying 30 seconds after first use, and their crackdown on resellers/secondhand sales of their products. Among other things:
- Community members were not happy that the #GirlPowered initiative was really PR speak and demanded answers from RECF
- They were also furious at Tony Norman’s general debauchery, such as the time he bullied the city government over a hanger lease for IFI’s private jet (that he mostly seems to use for himself), along with all the other previously described abuse of his own employees
- Fun fact: the private jet doesn’t even have a PIA, unlike Elon’s jet. For the past few months, it’s been supposedly sitting at a maintenance facility in Colorado.
- People discovered that two former toxic IFI execs who left got reinvited to run a competition for RECF with Tony Norman’s blessing
- A VRC student came forward and discussed another instance where Vex also violated FTC regulations regarding sending extra products to buyers and attempting to charge for the extra product or have it be returned
- An IFI employee claimed that these instances should have been impossible — it turned out that sales dept was so segmented the individual representatives were just doing this on their own without management’s knowledge, making these instances more of an incompetence rather than malice
- Several forum users started using an edit of the antifa logo titled Anti-IFI Action as their profile picture
But all of these things paled in comparison to the moment a student came forward and described how a former IFI employee and previous member of the game design committee for VRC had engaged in an abusive and predatory relationship with her, threatening to hurt himself when things went south.
Community members questioned the ability of VEX and RECF to provide a safe environment for their students — especially when a former coworker and acquaintance of the accused groomer came forward and straight up asserted that the person in question "was a key actor in the cultural issues discussed [in the original ChiefDelphi post about IFI culture issues in general]: during their tenure at IFI. Many no longer felt particularly enthusiastic buying parts from their one primary vendor. Some questioned whether they should continue their involvement in VRC at all. All in all, the community wanted answers.
IFI's Response
Of course, IFI and RECF weren’t going to sit there while in hot water. They would, in fact, respond to all the allegations.
The CEO of the REC Foundation, Dan Mantz, made a post to VexForums basically stating:
- That RECF is independent of VEX and IFI with their own "independent infrastructure, executive staff, operations, processes, HR department, employee handbook, etc"
- How RECF isn’t just VEX and they pick VEX because they think it’s the best option
- How IFI is going to make a response that will address community concerns
(Sidenote: pretty much all of the Discourses for RECF competitions are hosted on servers paid for and controlled by IFI and their employees.)
And soon enough, a response from IFI would indeed come, on both ChiefDelphi and VexForums. And boy, was it a response. This is in fact, one of the responses of all time, dare we say.
Just another day, completely not taking any responsibility, playing the victim, accusing everyone who spoke out as trying to sabotage them for their competition, and asserting how they have never had any complaints ever (and totally not because they were shredding the reports).
Let’s see some of the immediate reactions, quoted here verbatim:
The Testimony that killed the Vex Forums
Of course, everyone was Not Happy. But there was one last major bombshell post forthcoming from yet another former IFI employee and former alumni of FRC 148, one of the IFI house FRC teams. To summarize the post:
- 148’s lead mentor for most of the 2000s and 2010s was something of an idol. He had a popular blog (that went down the moment the IFI drama broke -- he's also requested takedowns of all Internet Archive copies too) and a figure many in the FRC community looked up to. He was also a relatively prominent figure within IFI,
- The same extended to to 148 itself — everyone wanted to be close with the Lead Mentor. It was the difference between collaborating with him on the robot design itself or just being yet another sheet metal fabrication body.
- As a result many students, including the post’s OP, would try and build close relationships to [Lead Mentor]. In retrospect, this practice was Really Weird — as said [Lead Mentor] would then attempt to date her after she graduated.
- 148, including [Lead Mentor] had a culture of their mentors above the age of 21 buying alcohol for mentors that were not at least 21 years old
- 148’s (as of now, current) mentor drive coach being something of a womanizer and a manipulative, irresponsible boyfriend
Immediately this, IFI would take down the Vex Forums, claiming they were going to transition to a new paid platform under the guise of “student safety.” They would quickly backpedal, and eventually put the forum back online, but now every post needed moderator approval.
Internally, IFI and RECF would make snide comments about this post, which would then also get brought to light, resulting in an apology from Dan Mantz.
The fallout
Things settle down at this point, especially since Thanksgiving was that week and IFI was on holiday. But things were not done yet.
Tony Norman would announce that he would step down as CEO of IFI, and RECF would remove him from his board. However, he still owns half the company, so he’s not really gone. To date, IFI has still not found a replacement CEO, and Tony still is likely to show up at the next Vex World Championship as usual.
A local paper would cover the story…heavily biased towards Tony. ChiefDelphi was, very reasonably, not very happy with this one.
#TeamIFI effectively no longer exists, as it is negative reputation for teams who care at this point. 148’s 2023 season robot notably did not show any sponsors in their reveal video.
IFI products now have a stigma in FRC. Some now call Falcons "bigot motors" as a joke. That said, IFI would continue to make at least a couple million on “new” Falcon 500 v3s, which were very expensive ($220), limited in total quantity for the entire season due to supply chain shenanigans, and still had QC issues.
The supplier West Coast Products, which sold quite a few products of their design under Vex SKU as a rather significant proportion of VexPro’s mechanical products, clarified that the products they make that are resold under Vex do not make Vex any money.
A side effect of this whole drama was that several other sexual predators in the FRC and VRC communities got publicly outed. Some of these had been banned from FIRST, but unlike some other youth organizations, FIRST generally does not publish their banlist so it remains to be seen if they will stay gone.
The [Lead Mentor] is no longer with 148 or IFI, but he’s still involved in the community – he now works for the company that makes the Falcon’s motor controller, and mentors a team who vehemently claimed he did not mentor them to others.
The entire Hexbug brand and Battlebots toys line was to be sold off to Spin Master.
In conclusion
Vex and RECF continue to exist, and IFI will still rake in money. But it’ll be harder for them to find impressionable interns to do cheap labor for them, and many FRC teams are now eyeing alternatives if at all possible, especially given the difficulty of buying new Falcons anyway.

2023.03.25 20:38 Dakkahead In search for Tanker articles
| Looking for articles(like this one posted) and similar material that I can plaster all over the company area. Reaching out to reddit for suggestions/guidance. I'm a nasty girl tanker and we have a company that is painstakingly finding their way to tanks, and tanking. It's very much a unit starting from the ground up, lots of passion from the Joe's level, matched with apathy from command. Me, along with some select NCOs, have been trying to conduct training where we can, chair drills, simulators, afvid, etc... Tldr looking for similar tanker articles (like the one posted) for plastering around the troop area. To mis-quote Gunny Highway, "when you start looking like tankers, when you start feeling like tankers, goddamnit you'll start acting like tankers..." 2023.03.25 20:22 TheMiddlePoli Walkability in the North Hills - Village at Pine, And advocating.
Hi all!,
I am a huge at advocating for walkability, Me and my SO plan to move to the west coast for a couple years but will be coming back to Pittsburgh to start a family/buy a house, Since we love it here and our family is here. I am completely familiar with city politics as I live in the city proper - But I was wondering in the North Hills specifically Is there any advocating amongst the various supervisors of townships for more walkability? I bring this up because I had to go pick up something in Wexford area, Which is the place I like the most in the North Hills - But still has nothing in comparison of walkability compared to the city proper or even south hills burbs like Downtown Mt Lebanon or Dormont. However across the Giant Eagle I noticed a really interesting neighborhood and found out it was called Village at Pine Townhomes, It had a walkable area with crosswalks and sidewalks to the area with various stores/grocery of the same name and also a rec center- and really interested me as me and my SO think ahead of time of where to buy a house (Since we really like North Hills since we grew up in the SH and also the air quality being bettemore thick nature in the NH + schools) What interested me about this as well is that it was obviously new/retrofitted to be walkable in probably about the best way they could do it for the infamous unwalkable NH.
Now I know North Hills will probably never in the near future be truly walkable with mix use zoning, Public Transportation to the city, No 4 lane highways (Though in Wexford there being less lanes is nice) or T rail. But this goes back to my question, Is there any advocating amongst residents or talk amongst supervisors in the North Hills to increase walkability kinda like this community seems to have? The motto on their site does mention "Urban style living in a suburban neighborhood" so obviously it was the point.

2023.03.25 18:45 jayhankedlyon Advance Wars COs as Commanders!
Hi all, WarGroove 2 news inspired a replay which inspired looking back to something I wrote up during quarantine: giving each Advance Wars CO the Commander treatment (minus Sturm, Von Bolt, and the Days of Ruin folks). Polished it up and figured y'all might enjoy!
Andy: Hyper Repair (Speed: Fast/Range: All)
All friendly units over the entire battlefield are restored by 20%. This is identical to his COP in a way most of my Grooves aren’t, but the unique field-wide effect differentiates it from Mercia’s, healing more units but at a diluted rate. Especially helpful on teams with high-range attackers and naval battles, as Andy can help units without being anywhere near them.
Max: Max Force (Speed: Medium/Range: 2)
All units within two tiles of Max get guaranteed critical hits when dealing direct damage for the rest of the turn. I feel like adjusting crit rate is more in line with Wargroove’s aesthetic than a stat boost, and while it doesn’t help units that would crit anyway, it allows you to bulldoze ahead with an all-out attack without thinking too hard, which is Max’s claim to fame.
Sami: Victory March (Speed: Medium/Range: 1)
Capture an adjacent property and bring it to 100% HP; remember that Strongholds are not captured but destroyed, so they are unaffected by this Groove. Rather than boosting infantry (which would be super broken in a game that’s full of infantry) Sami leans into her Super COP and the more active nature of Commanders in Wargroove by capturing bases herself. This is an incredible ability, taking the actions of at least two units (defeating a building then capturing it) and condensing it into one, while both cutting off an enemy supply line and bringing your own to full power. It can even be used to heal allies in a pinch by providing plenty of reinforcement juice. With this in mind, it might be more appropriate at a slower charge rate.
Rachel: Covering Fire (Speed: Slow/Range: All)
Three missiles strike the opposing army, which deal 30% of Rachel’s maximum damage to all surrounding foes (everything within two tiles of the center, in a classic diamond shape). The first missile strikes the healthiest Commander. The second missile strikes the most expensive enemy unit (again, by health). The third missile strikes wherever it would lower the most amount of total HP. This monster of a Groove is essentially the same as in Dual Strike, but with a focus on the opposing Commander instead of regular infantry. While similar to Koji’s Sparrow Bomb, it deals less damage with less control, but at a much higher range and radius with a guarantee to hit the Commander at least once.
Jake: Block Rock (Speed: Fast/Range: 1)
Place a 10 HP boombox on an adjacent tile that loses 2 HP per turn, like Emeric’s Elder Shield. All Plains tiles within three spaces of the boombox have their movement penalty for wheeled units and aquanauts removed, and ranged units on these Plains tiles have +1 Range. While this is situational depending on the map, this allows our Plains expert to roll out his artillery and wagons with ease, and create pockets of extra range to get the jump on distant foes.
Nell: Lucky Star (Speed: Slow/Range: All)
All units in the field have a 50% chance to crit, regardless of circumstances. Like with Max, adjusting crit rate gives it a groovy feel, and making it field-wide allows this to be a potentially devastating power, but only with luck. Charge rate can be adjusted depending on how well it works.
Hachi: Merchant Union (Speed: Slow/Range: All)
You may deploy ground units from any village on land, and naval units from any village in the sea. Like Teleport Beam, this allows for amazing deployment opportunities, but trades Nuru’s ability to place a unit anywhere (and have it move instantly) with the ability to potentially produce multiple units all over the battlefield.
Olaf: Blizzard (Speed: Slow/Range: All)
Changes the biome to Ice and causes severe weather until your next turn. I’m surprised we don’t have a weather-setting Commander already, but Olaf fits the bill just fine, using WarGroove’s mechanics to impair the opposing team (and your own team if you’re silly enough that you don’t activate Olaf’s Groove at the very end of your turn).
Grit: Snipe Attack (Speed: Medium/Range: 2)
All ranged units within two spaces of Grit can move and attack in the same turn, but cannot critically hit. This may seem OP (playtesting would be nice to confirm) but considering the cost of Ballistae and Trebuchets, and the fact that Nuru can essentially do the same thing with a single unit without even needing a unit to start with, I think it’s a neat way to give Grit a new tool that isn’t just adding range.
Colin: Gold Rush (Speed: Fast/Range: Not Applicable)
Multiplies Colin’s gold by 150%. Unit costs remain the same, but this is a way to keep Colin’s role as the money master producing units willy nilly. If it proves OP it can be slowed down or have the percentage tweaked, but I think it’s in keeping with what Commanders can already do in terms of value. Remember to use this power before buying units!
Sasha: Market Crash (Speed: Fast/Range: All)
Resets the Groove Meter of all opposing Commanders to 0. I love Sasha’s role as an anti-COP player in Dual Strike, and this is in keeping with that niche. Her power is making sure the other team doesn’t have a power, and with proper play she can keep the whole battle on an even keel.
Kanbei: Morale Boost (Speed: Slow/Range: 3)
Creates an aura that envelops all spaces within three tiles of Kanbei. All allies that are in this aura during the enemy Commander’s turn strike first when attacked if they’re able to counterattack. This is an excellent defensive tool, discouraging opponents from attacking your troops for fear of taking massive damage in the process. However, be sure you take account of ranged opponents! (This is closer to Samurai Spirit than Morale Boost in terms of the COP, but I went with the classic name.)
Sonja: Enhanced Vision (Speed: Fast/Range: Self)
Causes Fog of War to take effect until the end of your next turn if it isn’t already implemented. Sonja gains an additional five tiles of vision, which is unimpeded by forests, mountains, walls, and reefs. Adding Fog of War is new to her, but otherwise our recon expert is entirely too situational. At least she doesn’t have bad luck anymore!
Sensei: Airborne Assault (Speed: Medium/Range: All)
Spawns an active Spearman with 80% HP at every Village under Sensei’s command. This isn’t a 1-1 equivalent to his SCOP, as these units can’t combine for an income boost or heal themselves as easily, and your Harpies don’t get a boost (by the name, I’d like to think the Harpies dropped the Spearmen off), but with enough properties you can create a free army from scratch. Groove speed can be adjusted, but I figured Medium because there aren’t as many properties in this game as Advance Wars and the mechanics are different enough that I don’t want a Groove that charges slow and is only used when you can’t get much out of your new troops because they’re too far from the action. Happy to talk about adjustments for this one.
Grimm: Haymaker (Speed: Fast/Range: 1)
Grimm strikes an enemy with a blow that deals 200% of regular damage, but he is unable to counterattack until your next turn. Grimm's gimmick in Advance Wars is high power but low defense, and I don't want to lower his actual defense considering the value of commanders, but this ability gives a similar disadvantage without fully crippling him. It's a similar Groove to Sigrid's, but doesn't regain health, isn't a guaranteed kill, can't target aerial opponents, and requires planning around his inability to counterattack. However, it charges much faster and can hit enemy structures and Commanders (at full health, this Groove hits a Commander for 90% damage and a Stronghold for 80% damage, yowza).
Eagle: Lightning Strike (Speed: Slow/Range: 6)
All aerial units within six tiles of Eagle may move again, but cannot crit. Let’s face it, they gave this game’s version of Lightning Strike to Caesar. This alternative only affects aerial units as a nod to Eagle's specialty, but it has far greater potential than Caesar's due to its wider range. The inability to gain critical hits is crucial for balance, but other adjustments are welcome.
Drake: Typhoon (Speed: Slow/Range: All)
Causes fair winds until the end of your turn. Sure, this has nothing to do with Tsunami or Typhoon, but frankly there are few ways to implement those abilities well in Wargroove (can't reduce fuel and mass damage to opponents is more Hawke's MO) and I already gave Sonja the Fog of War buff. The goal here is to instead give Drake his weather duo status with Olaf while providing a weather that greatly enhances his navy for a turn.
Jess: Overdrive (Speed:Medium/Range: 1)
Use this Groove on an adjacent Wagon to enter the Wagon, even if it contains another unit. Any units unloaded by this Wagon during this turn may act immediately. As with Drake, the lack of a fuel feature hurts our means of making a proper translation of Jess's abilities (Green Earth in general has it rough), so this ability taps into her role as a mover and shaker to quickly transport units to and from the fray. The perfect Commander for Wagon fans!
Javier: Tower Shield (Speed: Fast/Range: 1)
Select an adjacent friendly property (not including your Stronghold). As long as it remains in your control, this property and all units within two spaces of the property take 50% reduced damage from ranged attacks. As there are no Com Towers in Wargroove, this gives Javier his signature indirect damage reduction while making use of Wargroove’s unique capture mechanic, bulwarking your properties from distant fire and creating safe zones to counter long range assaults.
Hawke: Black Storm (Speed: Very Slow/Range: All)
Reduces 20% HP from all opponents, and restores 10% HP to all allies. This is a tremendous ability hampered by a slow charge time, and I didn’t want to go too far by restoring 20% HP to your buddies a la Advance Wars, but this straightforward nightmare of a Groove packs a serious punch.
Lash: Terrain Tactics (Speed: Fast/Range: Self)
Using this Groove casts a buff on Lash for the rest of the turn, but does not take an action. For the rest of the turn, Lash ignores movement penalties (beyond seas) and deals 10% extra damage for every defense point the terrain she's standing on provides. This versatile Groove lets Lash move quickly to engage or escape, and hit hard using terrain advantages. Pairs well with Emeric!
Flak: Brute Force (Speed: Fast/Range: 2)
Creates a visible aura around Flak until the beginning of the following turn: all units, friend or foe, have a 50% chance to crit regardless of circumstances within this aura. This plays with Flak's good and bad luck by giving him decent odds at a great assault, but bad odds for the counterattack. A risky play for a risky commander!
Adder: Sidewinder (Speed: Very Fast/Range: Self)
Using this Groove casts a buff on Adder for the rest of the turn, but does not take an action. Adder has +2 movement range until the end of this turn. This lets him weave in and out of battle, and its breakneck charging speed is perfect for a slippery snake.
Kindle: Urban Blight (Speed: Medium/Range: 4)
Reduce the HP of all opposing properties by 3, and restore the HP of all allied properties by 3 (this does not include strongholds). Given units can't actually exist on properties in WarGroove, Kindle goes from a CO specializing in fighting in cities to a Commander specializing in dismantling and reinforcing Villages and other properties.
Koal: Trail of Woe (Speed: Fast/Range: Weird!)
Must be used on a road, and grants the full length of the road +2 Defense for allied units until the beginning of your next turn. A situational power that leans into the road aspect of Koal rather than movement speed, and lets you safely approach using terrain that's good for speed but normally not protection.
Jugger: Overclock (Speed: Very Fast/Range: 1)
Deal 1-10 damage to an adjacent unit. I wanted to distinguish Jugger from Flak better than AW does, so this interpretation of RNG is far more drastic. Sometimes Jugger can knock out a Golem from 1 HP, sometimes all he does is 2 against a dog, but at least he isn't counterattacked! Charges extremely quickly for many rolls of the die.

2023.03.25 18:45 Throwway-support What is a Republican and a Democrat in 2023?
In the mid-19th century, the Republican party was a regional organization popular in the Midwest, Western states, and Northeast. It advocated for government intervention to help big business and grow the nation’s economy. It’s well known stance against slavery was in part held because it was seen as threatening the modernization of the economy.
The Democrats were a regional party popular in Southern US states, and certain Northern Big cities. It advocated for Slave Power and states rights on part of the interests of it’s southern support. It also advocated for the interests of urban political machines who influenced the votes of recent immigrants and working class urban dwellers
Interestingly, both parties share superficial characteristics with their 19th century iterations. Namely Northern Urban support for Democrats, and big business support for Republicans
My question is, in your view, what today is Republican and what today is a Democrat?
Edit: I’m left wing. But these answers are more partisan then I was intending. I was looking for more demographic/geographic based.
Something like Democrats are strong with a college educated whites who live in Urban centers and people of color of all races and class. They are also strong with female voters and the young. The northeast and West coast are Democratic strongholds.
Republicans are strong with whites without a college degree who live in rural areas, suburban whites in the South and Exurbs. The south minus (Virgina and North Carolina), plains and mountain states are Republican Strong holds.
The upper midwest and the southwest are battleground areas

2023.03.25 18:33 ruinprophet1 Gaming PC
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Mostly FPS gaming and just personal use want to be able to hit high frames in FPS games. The game I mainly play is Valorant. From time to time I tend to play other RPG games. For personal use, I tend to use Youtube a lot and do a lot of multitasking where I have a lot of different tabs open. I currently use a PC that I built in about 2016, so all of the parts are outdated and I am running low on storage. It is getting kinda annoying that I can't run a game and watch a video on a second monitor or do anything other than my game without frames dropping consistently and my not being able to enjoy the game how it is supposed to play.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Between $1500-2250
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Most likely around two to three weeks, but possibly sooner as the micro center deals look good enough to start now.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Basically all new computer parts. I already have a ducky keyboard, mouse, and 144hz monitor. I do plan on purchasing a 240hz monitor.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
I have access to Microcenter in Tustin, California only problem is 7900x CPU is out so idk if I should go with 7950x for a bit more or 7700x for a bit less.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I will be reusing the ducky keyboard, hyperx Mouse and asus 144hz monitor and possibly could save my gb of hard drive so idk how that works with just plugging it in with the new pc
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I am not too familiar with overclocking, so I guess I do not plan on overclocking.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
want at least a 1gb of SSD and 32 gb of ram as its not that much more then 16gb now. Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
something that fits all the parts perfectly doesn't need RGB at all
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference? I have Windows 10 in my current PC. I would have to figure out if I still have the license for my current copy that I could transfer to the new PC, or if I should just buy a copy of the latest version of Windows?
I am really focused on the number of frames i am getting will also play the game on low settings for FPS games but want something that can play on high settings when its an RPG-style game.

2023.03.25 18:01 ManEffThisS Splatoon 3 Maps and how to use them
Ver. 3.0.1 I want to take the time to provide some tips on how to improve and make best use of the terrain. Talking strictly about turf war maps since other modes are just variations.
In general, use height in any available way to get the upper hand. If you are higher than opponent you have advantage. Utilize cover to dodge, recover, and hide. Your line of sight is key. If you can anticipate what your opponent will do you can counter. If you can't push, try to flank - even if you can't take anyone out reducing their mobility may be enough to help your team make a successful play. Check the minimap occasionally, especially when things seem too easy. Most importantly, play cooperatively with your team. Also knowing your weapon matchups helps a lot.
Now onto the stages Scorch Gorge: if you can't push directly through there are two spots from spawn that can drop down into the flanks, on the right and left. Both are solid options but if you have the range, go up under the big metal balls and snipe. Generally, if you can get even half of mid and a flank locked down you should be able to take the rest. Just pay attention to the mid's center high ground
Eeltail Alley: lots of people complain its too streamlined. I disagree. There are plenty of inkable blocks on bottom for both left and right to be able to climb into the next little pocket and plenty of cover to take advantage of. The upper path isn't always locked down by sniper. Throw a bomb and move. No bombs? No problem. Take the lower route and utilize its plentiful cover.
Hagglefish Market: with a very open mid it's easy to get discouraged. Duck behind corners and make sure you have an escape route if things get dicey. The side routes around mid are good if your team gets pushed back a little too far and you need to pincer the enemy.
Undertow Spillway: even if you don't have a lot of range, those upper flanks are a good way to annoy the enemy enough for distraction and get rid of their mobility. The back lower pockets are more for recovery and regrouping if you are getting overwhelmed in either of the two mid lanes. Having your walls inked is key in this map
Mincemeat metalworks: dropdowns to mid and flank are your best routes rather than the big metal bridge in the center. If you can get to enemy base and remove their long range capabilities you can shut them down pretty quickly, just don't stay for too long.
Hammerhead Bridge: Teamwork is key to this stage. Because of the limited flanking and straight path from spawn to spawn it is imperative that you not only push as a team but also stick together and don't go ahead alone. Always make sure you and your team have an escape route, and make proper use of the mid's differing heights and cover.
Museum d'Alfonsino: few things are as important as the spinning platforms that allow enemies to get into your base and vice-versa. However, you'll lose if you just camp on that edge so make sure to get down into mid and cover that ground. Flank routes are available but are pretty small so make sure the enemy is well distracted if you intend to use them.
Mahi-Mahi Resort: cover doesn't matter as much as height difference does here. Since cover is pretty much blown by the mid 3 wooden towers, and flank routes don't offer much in the ways of getting around enemies unless they are already in your base your priority should be securing at least enemy half of mid and the towers. From there the rest should fall into place as long as someone is inking.
Inkblot Art Academy: don't forget about the flanks. There is a concrete block at the top of those ramps that are inkable and perfect for taking cover. Dive behind corners for cover as well. You can pretty easily get to enemy base from the mid tower. A good sniper position is on top of the non inkable wall by the ramp that leads down to mid since it puts you right in front of enemy spawn and flank AND gives a good spot to drop down for cover. Keep pressure on enemy base and you should come away with a W.
Sturgeon Shipyard: with lots of options to get to and from mid its really just about picking the best route. It may not always be wise to dive into the whole enemy team on the middle ground, sometimes playing aggressive and heading around to enemy spawn is the better option even for a distraction. The upper flank to the right of spawn is a great getaway route.
MakoMart: With the really open mid it gets really important not to just rush in. Going around the outside will often prove useful since you can easily get to mid from anywhere since almost all the walls are inkable. Utilize not only your side lanes, but the enemies' as well.
Wahoo World: "All routes lead to mid. It's a snipers paradise" well yeah if you keep just going to the mid circle. Nobody says you have to. The small walls that surround mid are great for cover and height advantage. The brick wall is intended to be climbed up to suprise that pocket. You can use the inkable rotating wall to pop up anywhere around its circumference. Routes here are only limited if you keep trying to push in the same place coming from the same direction. This stage is great for circling around behind enemy lines.
Brinewater Springs: the whole map is super open making it sniper paradise. You can circumvent that with some precise squid rolls from the ramp off of flank. On the flip side, you can see everyone's movement from mid. Keep an eye on how your enemy is moving and where to anticipate and counter. Even if you make it up to enemy spawn they can just as easily take the long fall down to flank and then mid.
Flounder Heights: a little used route is from spawn staying along the left of the ramp going up and going up that inkable wall to mid. Whoever controls the higher ground here wins. But, don't forget you don't have to go all the way up. Sometimes quickly getting over mid and down to enemy base is what is needed. Best advice I can give on this stage is to try to use misdirection or force someone to move the way you want.
Um'ami Ruins: two routes to mid are straight down the ramp into mid, and around to the right by the circular platform. There is also that lower route though with the ink rail. This is similar to Undertow in that there are essentially 2 mid lanes. For all intents and purposes, your best bet is to focus on the lane on your side and then go from there. The mid platform is essentially what determines win or loss since your team can stick to that and just in front of enemy lanes to dominate the map.
Manta Maria: with all the inkable walls there is a plethora of ways to get around the map. What's more is that every spot has potential to turn the tides. This is my favorite map because of the many possibilities for flanks, suprise attacks, counters, sniper positions, and overall design. The stage is best suited to players who can fully utilize everything mentioned in the general tips. If one route is shut down you can always garuntee there is another that is wide open.
I will try to remember to come update this as more maps come out. If you can think of more or better suggestions please leave a comment. I'm not a pro player but I notice a lot of players struggling with terrain and matchups. These tips won't always help because sometimes the matches are just unbalanced in terms of weaponry choices and skills, but at least I hope this helps someone
