Missed this one - MUST-WATCH!

• Swarm (Amazon Prime) premiered earlier this month and for some reason it wasn't on my radar. Well, now it is BIG TIME. Another TV podcast pointed out we may like it, and I'm SOLD! It's creepy, disturbing, and it even includes actual bee buzzing audio tracks throughout which is super creepy and strange and I love it. I had no idea Swarm was loosely based on true stories of internet rumors, including inspiration drawn from Beyonce's hive. Definitely worth the watch! I know it's good when I'm not even looking at my phone while I watch. Billie Eilish (who I also love) makes an appearance this season, and her character is based on a real cult. Between the buzzing, upcoming cult and creepiness - this is a must-watch for Yellowjackets fans. Prove me wrong... I'd love for us to cover this show with another TV podcast - contact us if that's you and then I'll just need to convince Emily to watch it {hint hint, co-host ;-)}.

Premiering picks of the week

• Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. (Disney+) — Season 2 premieres on March 31. While this is the exact opposite of a series like Yellowjackets, my whole family loved the first season, me especially given I was OBSESSED with the original Doogie Howser, M.D. with Neil Patrick Harris. I literally had his poster on my wall as a kid. This is a cute watch, and it takes place in Hawaii which is my spirit location (like a spirit animal but a location, lol).
• The Power (Amazon Prime) — The show is described as "teenage girls suddenly and mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will." SciFi isn't normally my thing (with exceptions), but this looks interesting and has Toni Collette and John Leguizamo in whom I both love. Thought the teenage girls would also appeal to Yellowjackets fans.

Upcoming premieres of interest (in date order)

• Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime) — The final season premieres on April 14!! Here's a flashback to that time I actually bought the Tupperware placed in the show. Brilliant product placement with easy monetization! I love creative marketing.
• Firefly Lane (Netflix) — Season 2 part 2 will close out the series and will air on April 27, a couple of months earlier than planned. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did (not a huge Katherine Heigl fan, but I do LOVE Sarah Chalke). Never read the book, but am considering it after the series ends at the recommendation of one of our readers/commenters from last week.
• The Afterparty (Apple TV+) — Season 2 premieres on April 28 and I can't wait for this one! Season one was easy to watch and very funny with a little mystery mixed in. It's an easy watch.
• Fatal Attraction (Paramount+) — Season 1 premieres on April 30 and I may try it.

Casual, weekly, and occasional watches

• A Million Little Things (Hulu)— The final season is now in progress, new episodes drop weekly. It's moving a little slow which is even more indicative that it's a good time for this one to end. I feel like some of the storylines are contrived and just too forced. Looking forward to the end.
• Abbott Elementary (Hulu) — It continues to be a solid family watch. Comedy genius.
• Bel Air (Peacock) — Season 2 premiered and I've been watching with my husband and son. We enjoy it and look forward to the rest of the season, which now also features former The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Tatyana Ali who is NOT be playing her former role of Ashley Banks. Note, this is an adult drama series vs. the original which was a family-oriented sitcom. The reboot was definitely made for adults and original fans versus made for a younger, current day audience.
• Bones (Hulu) — I randomly started watching this as background/filler TV when I'm doing laundry, cleaning, falling asleep etc. Great show and I can't believe I've never watched it! For a show about bones and murder, it's pretty funny!
• The Company You Keep (ABC/Hulu) — I'm absolutely loving it and look forward to watching each week. Definitely worth a try if you're in the market for a weekly watch.
• Daisy Jones & The Six (Amazon Prime) — If you've read my prior posts you saw that I enjoyed this but don't think it's as edgy as the book. I finished all of the episodes. It was definitely entertaining but just not as good as the book. There's chatter of a possible second season or spin-off, which is surprising given it was dubbed a Miniseries. If you haven't read the book yet, I HIGHLY recommend you do after watching and I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy it more than the show. Order it here. You can also listen to the actual album from the TV band! Brilliant marketing.
• East New York (CBS) — This one tends to be more background TV. There's a lot of overacting but overall the stories are watchable and I tolerate them. I can see this moving off of my list when the season ends.
• Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) - John Oliver is one of our quintessential weekly watches, I love a good take on news with a comedy spin.
• The Last of Us (HBO) — WHAT A SEASON FINALE from a couple of weeks ago; I'm still reeling over it! I'm on the edge of my seat for a second season; Pedro Pasal and Bella Ramsey are both just so incredible. Major props to this series adapted from a video game - something I never expected to fall in love with, especially since I swore off post-apocalyptic zombie shows after I dropped off of TWD in Season 8. I'll keep this one on the list for a few more weeks for those who may discover it here and opt to watch.
• Lucky Hank (AMC) — Loved the first episode, now I need to find a way to keep watching it as I don't have AMC. If you have it, let me know what you think of the subsequent episodes. "From the executive producers of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Bob Odenkirk is Lucky Hank. An English department chairman at an underfunded college, Professor Hank Devereaux toes the line between midlife crisis and full-blown meltdown, navigating the offbeat chaos in his personal and professional life – oddly proving tantrums get better with age."— AMC Not to mention Mireille Enos from The Killing is in it! I LOVED LOVED LOVED The Killing and can't wait to see Mireille on my screen again with Bob Odenkirk who is also one of my faves. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 94%.
• The Mentalist (HBO) — My son has adopted this show as a new favorite so we've been watching it together a few nights a week. It's good, though dated; I've always been a fan of crime and detective shows so it checks that box for me.
• Mythic Quest (Apple TV+) — As someone who doesn't play video games at all I questioned whether or not I'd be into it, but it's more like The Office in that it's a comedy that takes place in a workplace. They just happen to be video game developers/producers which makes for an interesting story. The cast includes Rob McElhenney of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, along with Charlotte Nicdao as Poppy Li (LOVE her character), comic relief Jessie Ennis as Jo, and others. Worth a watch, there are 3 seasons in total, we're almost done with the available episodes.
• *NEW\* Nancy Drew (HBO) — Fun fact about me, one of my favorite possessions is a stunning full collection of the Nancy Drew books by Carolyn Keene. I acquired it after being interviewed by the seller to ensure I would not be turning around and reselling the collection. I passed the test! It's taken me too long to watch the series, but thanks to a nice nudge from one of my besties and fellow Nancy Drew fans, I finally started. I'm on episode 4 and loving it so far! It's a great balance of keeping some things from the book and making it more modern. There's a ghost element, but it's not "too much" — it's just right.
• Poker Face (Peacock) — Season 1 ended a few weeks ago but I'm going to keep this here for anyone looking for a new show. It's an easy one to watch, infusing a perfect amount of mystery and comedy into it. Natasa Lyonne is a freaking genius. A fun watch for Yellowjackets fans.
• Shrinking (Apple TV+) — Love this series, and the first season wrapped up nicely. Shrinking was renewed for a second season. I'll take this off of my list next week but will keep it for now to encourage others to watch. 5 Stars from me.
• *NEW\* Top Chef World All-Stars (Bravo) — The 20th season of this quintessential cooking show takes to London with worldwide contestants this season. I gave up on Hells Kitchen seasons ago, but have generally kept up with Top Chef*.* I love Padma, Tom, and Gail!
• True Detective (HBOMax) — My husband randomly put on Season 3 a few weeks ago and I'm in! I enjoyed the first season but never got into the second. I just can't stay away from murdery shows. We're casually watching when we can.
• True Lies (Paramount+) — I only watched this one because Steve Howey (Kevin from Shameless) stars in it. The first episodes are okay, but it didn't draw me in quite the same as another recent premiere (kind of similar) The Company You Keep did. Some movies should maybe be kept as movies was my first thought. Still haven't got past episode 3.
• Survivor (CBS) — Season 44 started on March 1 and wow what an interesting group of contestants! I'll drop my projected winner here soon.
• UnPrisoned (Hulu) — Season 1 premiered on March 10, starring one of my favorites, Kerry Washington! The pilot was good, I enjoyed it, but did find myself scrolling a bit. I've been watching subsequent episodes in the background and it's not bad, just not exceptional either.
• Will Trent (Hulu) — I've gotta say I have gone back-and-forth on this show, but it's a now a permanent fixture in the weekly watch category. This past week's episode was a good one!
• Wynonna Earp (Netflix) — A friend of the podcast is part of this fandom and introduced me to the series, and I'm still pretty early into it but it's a fun watch. If you were a Buffy person, odds are you will love this.
• Yellowjackets (Showtime) — Season 2 made its triumphant return on March 24 for Showtime app subscribers and March 26 everywhere else, with times noted above. • You (Netflix) — After taking this off of my watch list, I decided to give it another shot with ***You'***s 4th season after I had a hard time getting into the first couple of episodes. I'm glad I did; the twists have been enjoyable and I still have a lot to go. I guess Joe Goldberg is just too hard to give up...

New & other shows I plan to watch but haven't had time:

• *NEW\* Class of '07 (Amazon Prime) — Season 1 premiered on March 17 and this one wasn't on my radar until my friend Shari of TeenDramaWhore texted me the trailer and commented, "This looks like the comedy version of Yellowjackets," so naturally here I am adding it to my list! I put the first episode on the other night and fell asleep, but that had less to do with the show than it did my stress and exhaustion from that particular day (IYKYK...). I will try this one again, for sure.
• The Flight Attendant (HBOMax) season 2 — Is it even worth it? I heard it wasn't great...
• Jack Ryan (Amazon Prime) — I absolutely loved the first two seasons and am eager to get caught up on season 3. While I had initially thought I'd only ever see John Krasinski as Jim on The Office, I've gotta say he's rocked the role of Jack Ryan, the total opposite of Jim.
• *NEW\* The Night Agent (Netflix) — Season 1 premiered March 23 on Netflix. "While monitoring an emergency line, a vigilant FBI agent answers a call that plunges him into a deadly conspiracy involving a mole at the White House." I'll give this one a go - though with True Lies and The Company You Keep, I fear it may be one too many action shows in my rotation (though Netflix does coin it a "mystery, the trailer look very action-y.)
• *NEW\* Rabbit Hole (Paramount+) — Season 1 premiered on March 26. According to Paramount+, "Nothing is what it seems when John Weir (Kiefer Sutherland), master of corporate espionage, finds himself at the center of a shadowy conspiracy." I love Kiefer and this seems to be right up his alley given his time on 24 and Designated Survivor.
• Restaurants at the End of the World (National Geographic / Apple TV+) — Season 1 premiered on March 21. Kristen Kish (whom I loved on Top Chef) hosts, and "travels the world in search of the people, places, culture and traditions behind the world’s most remote restaurants." This will be a great background show once I start.
• Succession (HBO) — I've only watched a few episodes but it's been on my list to binge. Apparently I didn't get it watched in time for the season 4 premiere which happened on March 26. This season will be the last one for the series. Succession has won 13 Emmys and continues to be the talk of the TV town, I've gotta get on it! With them out of the way, hopefully that will open up some Emmys opportunities for our beloved Yellowjackets.
• Truth Be Told (AppleTV+) season 3 — Can I watch season 3 without having watched season 2? I just couldn't get into the last season.
• *NEW\* Up Here (Hulu) — Season 1 premiered on March 24. Now, I'm not normally a "musical rom com" person, but I do adore Mae Whitman from her days on Parenthood (that and Brothers and Sisters were my This is Us before This is Us) so I do plan to watch and see if the pilot draws me in enough to continue. My husband is not into musicals, so I'll really have to find time to fit this one in.

• The Bear (FX/Hulu) — Good news! We finally have a teaser and season 2 premiere date! There are 10 episodes coming at us this summer, and I cannot wait!!
• Cobra Kai (Netflix)
• Cruel Summer (Hulu/Freeform) — It looks like we can expect season 2 this summer, plenty of time to catch up on season 1!
• The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)
• The Morning Show (Apple TV+) — Based on our Google search, "Apple TV+ hasn't released an official release date for The Morning Show season 3. Filming just wrapped on February 9, 2023, so you can likely expect season 3 to premiere in mid to late 2023"
• Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) — We plan to cover this series in a podcast crossover episode coming in the next month or so. Stay-tuned!
• Severance (Apple TV+)
• Virgin River (Netflix) — Rumor has it Season 5 will premiere in July 2023.

While wandering around the Zone we may suspect that some mutants were created artificially, but we never really learn which of them exactly are the result of experiments conducted in laboratories. We can only guess that creatures like controllers or burers are not a "natural" result of the Zone's influence on living beings - as in the case of boars or blind dogs.
Oblivion Lost design documents can give us more insight into the origins of man-made mutants, as well into their early concepts, which often differ from the final results which we know from the games.
Due to the fact that these informations can only be found in desdocs it goes without saying that they shouldn't be considered as canon, but they can still give us hints about the devs intentions.
Test subjects and locations related to experiments
The main facility used by the Group for experiments on the living subjects was the X-18 lab, which collaborated with the Agroprom Research Institute - Agroprom was sending "materials" to the lab. We learn about that from documents and notes which we can find in Shadow of Chernobyl (Investigation report, X18 PDA entries).
In one desdoc from 2005, which describes the passage of the game, we can learn about the existence of "colonies" - facilities used for storage of the test subjects (source).

Laboratory X18. Lots of destroyed materials. What remains are only the remains of circuits and an indication of problems with overheating of experimental samples of Kasyanov's installations. Materials for testing installations on the "material" from the colony 1290. And the noted unexpected results of spontaneous changes in the human genome.

Labs working on psi-emitters also used human test subjects - we would learn about another colony named 1296-bis from the documents found in X-16 lab. Their contents were cut however, and don't appear in the game. Excerpt:

To continue research, we need a new batch of biomaterials, in the amount of: 10 animal specimens and 10 human specimens from colony 1296-bis. I also ask you to send additional guards, since it becomes problematic to keep the prisoners after the psi-influence. After the last experiment, some of them managed to escape.

In the laboratory at Radar we were supposed to find correspondence between the head of the lab, Prof. Vadim Mikhailovich Chubko, and the head of the aforementioned colony. Again, this document was cut from the game.

A message from the Professor to the head of a strict regime colony regarding the delivery of 20 prisoners for psi experiments.
- (...) We need 20 'sheep' from your farm. Preferably younger. (...) We guarantee payment. As always on time. Transportation is on us.
- Vadim Mikhailovich, be afraid of God, how much longer can we? They are already going to send a commission from the Ministry of Health to me because of such a death rate of life-sentenced prisoners. (...) I can no longer send people. I'm sorry, but I am afraid.
- You understand very well that you will send me this batch of prisoners and you will send it whenever I demand. And if you run out, you will find more with your work colleagues. Because, as you well know, if they find out about your deeds, then you will have to sit next to the people whom you massively import to us for death. And they have a hard time dying - trust me. Can you imagine yourself next to them in a cell? (...) I have already explained to you more than once - the president is not a decree for me and my people, let alone some fucking ministry. So relax, our dear Kirill Petrovich, and enjoy life. The issue with the ministry will be closed.

As we can see, the experiments were mainly carried out on prisoners kept in some colonies which collaborated with the Group members conducting the experiments. The correspondence also shows that the Group was very influential - to the point of complete disregard for the government.
Descriptions of man-made mutants
Those are 2003 descriptions (and early concept arts) of mutants created via experiments (I included only the interesting parts of the descriptions and omitted the mundane characteristics due to length; source).

Controller. 1.8 m. The result of genetic experiments carried out by special services on criminals under the program for the development of telepathic abilities in a person. Program "Universal Soldier". Dressed in the remains of a black lab suit.
- Hypertrophic forehead, pulsating blistering ulcers in the temple area.
- Attacks stalkers, scientists, military - kills and eats body parts or leaves them zombified.
- The damage to the victim's brain is almost always irreversible.
- If there are zombies nearby, he puts them into an aggressive state towards the enemy.

- Lives only in dark, gloomy undergrounds.
- Burer attacks with powerful limbs, inflicts an invisible telekinetic strike.
- When moving, makes small physical objects within a radius of 5-10 m. scatter to the sides.
- Telekinesis of physical objects of any size.
- Creates a gravitational field that protects against bullets and explosions.
- Harsh light blinds the burer for a while.

Izlom (Fracture). 1.9 m. Unknown mutations. Either the result of experiments, or the result of the influence of the Zone on the people remaining in it. Limb hypertrophy.
- Telepathy.
- He slouches and hides his pseudolimb under the cloak. From a distance he resembles a hunchbacked tramp.
- Attempts to lure stalkers by talking or pleading.
- If you share food, you can find out interesting informations about the Zone.
- Strong blows with the hypertrophied arm.
- Telekinetic strike.

There is a mention of relations of these three mutants with the rest of the man-made humanoid creatures:

All three are human-mutants in which much remains of a human. All three avoid the next group of complete freak-mutants: bloodsucker, pseudo-giant, poltergeist.

Bloodsucker. 1.9 m. Genetic waste left after the experiments, which continued to mutate throughout the years of the Zone existence. Incomprehensible radiations of the Zone somehow support the viability of these creatures (the whole group). A creature overgrown with hair, with a terrifying sucker-maw.
- Clever, aggressive creature, does not obey the controller.
- Eats anything that moves.
- It has a frightening effect on animals and slows down the reaction of a human.
- Primary action: ambush, attack, eat, hide.
- Sees better at night and in the dark.
- Becomes invisible. It flickers at first, and then completely disappears.
- Paralyzing blow (lowers the strength of the enemy, when the strength runs out the victim is paralyzed, and the bloodsucker is ready to suck blood).

Pseudo-giant. 2 m. Muscles+jaws - blunt power.
Atrophied lower limbs are replenished with powerful paw-hands. Have the manners of a buffalo in the arena.
- Hits to the head do not lead to the desired result. The brain is protected by a thick skull. In addition, many of the functions of the latter are performed by the spinal cord.
- Lives near military laboratories.
- In the area of lake Yantar.
- Moves quickly by jumping.
- Powerful, repelling strike with the paw.

Poltergeist. 1.7 m. "Intellectual" of this group.
- Basic state - lying down, dozing. "Pondering".
- When approached, the visitor receives powerful psi + physical field strikes. In this case, it is a kind of protective aura. This weak, crawling creature protects its life in this way.
- Turning on protective auras, it simultaneously tries to crawl into cover.
- Not found in open areas.
- Auras consume its energy. After that it is practically powerless. But it can deliver sensitive blows with the remaining pair of limbs.
- Creates psi-images - shadows that distract enemies from it. The shadows pass through the walls. Their presence is an indicator of the presence of a poltergeist nearby. Hitting a shadow causes the player's stamina to drop. No physical damage. Psychic harm.

What's interesting is that besides these six humanoid mutants, two animal-like mutants are also described as direct results of some experiments.

Chimera. 1.4 m. The result of genetic experiments under the "Universal Animal-Protector" program.
- Very smart, strong and fast creature.
- Hides, walks around from behind.
- The duplicated system of internal organs and the additional brain make the process of killing it very problematic.
- Regeneration.
- In motion it resembles a panther.
- The only worthy opponents in the Zone - the Chernobyl dog and the pseudo-giant.

Flesh. 1.2 m. The result of genetic experiments on domestic animals (pigs).
- Bone leg-outgrowths allow the animal to move around the "dirty" areas without harm.
- The hypertrophied intellect and eyes of a chameleon allows it to survive in the Zone.
- Vile, cunning and cowardly. Afraid of many.
- Seeing that the enemy does not see it, quietly sneaks up from behind and unexpectedly attacks.
- The rudiments of speech - mutterings similar to human language.
- Strong blows with bone outgrowths.
- Chameleon skin changes color depending on the detailed objects underfoot.
- Talks to itself in a calm state.

Flesh was planned to have some unique skills - chameleon-like camouflage and ability to speak. Both ideas were scrapped, but the fact that flesh could be genetically engineered and isn't just a result of the Zone's influence on pigs is actually hinted in Call of Pripyat, by Prof. Hermann:

"(...) Obviously, some mutations can be explained by radiation... But, excuse me! An ordinary pig would need hundreds, if not thousands, of years to mutate into flesh! In the Zone the mutation occurred in a couple of years. It's as if someone directly altered the genetic information in individual animals."

In any case, those eight creatures (seven of which appear in the actual games) were supposed to be lab-grown mutants - or at least, in the 'main' version of the story. There is a draft of an alternative story from 2003, in which all mutants would be described as results of experiments, but that's a different topic.
It seems that devs did not forget about the 'Universal Soldier' Program after the Oblivion Lost development, since we can find a mention of it in one of the desdocs of the cancelled S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 from 2011, in description of scenario idea related to the planned Mimic mutant.

The player finds a laboratory in which the mimics were created. (...) As a variant, the lab worked on the "universal soldier" project, doing experiments on prisoners (by-products of the project - controller, burer, mimic). Eventually, the player finds information about the successful completion of the experiment - a supersoldier was created, that looks exactly like a human.
