Organizational culture is the shared knowledge within the organization regarding the rules and norms that underpin the behaviors and attitudes of employees.
Organizational culture can be categorized into three main components:

1. Observable artifacts
2. Espoused values
3. Basic underlying assumptions or values

Observable artifacts include symbols, physical structures, language, stories, rituals, and ceremonies. Espoused values are beliefs, norms, and philosophies that the company expresses in written form. Additionally, basic underlying assumptions are the values ingrained in employees which they act upon without questioning the validity of their behavior in a given situation. That’s it.
A couple of facts:
Basic underlying assumptions may not always be apparent to organizational veterans as they are not always visible. Company culture is primarily learned from other employees. Without having worked there yet, there is no way for you to know what the culture entails. The ASA Framework suggests that potential employees are attracted to organizations that best align with their own personalities, and individuals who don't fit well will become unhappy and leave the organization. Simply, it’s the responsibility of the employee to leave if they feel they don't fit in.
Point is, if you have successfully navigated all hiring barriers and someone denies you a position because you’re not a good cultural fit, you need a very specific explanation otherwise it’s a veil for discrimination.

I hope I explain myself correctly. What do you think of photos in films of characters that are clearly promo photos /screen shots? For example in Scream VI there is a photo of Billy Loomis on the police board but it is a still / promo of when he was in the original film, not an actual ‘photo’ of him that would be evidence. You know? There’s also a really famous example too of Sonia in EastEnders in UK where she had a shrine to her dead boyfriend and because he was a bit of a heartthrob back then, all the pictures of him, instead of being ‘pictures’ she would have had, theywere magazine cutouts that didn’t exist in the EastEndersVerse (I went there!). Can you think of any other examples? Seems so sloppy.

4yo, started preschool last August. This triggered an onslaught of illness with it all peaking in Fall/Winter. We had it all. Croup, HFMD, RSV, Adenovirus, Pneumonia, Pink Eye, Norovirus, etc. His school had both HFMD & Pink Eye outbreak during that time. Flash forward, we have discovered he required ear tubes due to chronic ear infections (that came along with each illness). He got the tubes and also his adenoids removed 12 days ago. He was back to school one week after his surgery and he is sick again. Fever 3 days, worsening cough. Somebody please tell me this is normal, I am losing my mind. He is STILL getting sick just about every other week. Is this normal??? Is the school not cleaning/sanitizing? It’s one of the best preschools in our area but they are indoors a lot- even when it’s a nice day outside. They combine the two preschool classes a lot as well. Are they not monitoring parents who drop off their sick kids?
The only time my son is not sick is if I keep him home (which we did to quarantine for surgery). We have summer travel coming up and I’m tempted to keep him home ahead of time to guarantee he won’t get sick- it’s that bad. We’ve had blood work done 2x because I honestly thought he might have immune system issues. Everything came back normal. I feel like no other people I know with this aged child gets sick like we do. I give him vitamins every day, he eats relatively balanced meals. The only other thing I can think of is that I never produced enough breast milk for him. I almost died after he was born and lost over half my blood which caused me to be a microsupplier. In addition to the stress of all of this I am now blaming myself (again) for not being able to give him enough breast milk 😫 Is this why his immune system is weak?Somebody please tell me this will pass because I am truly at the end of my rope. I was not prepared for this chapter of parenthood.

Prompt ideas:

• Halo/Gears of War crossover: My Spartan-IV OC and her AI companion interact with Delta squad, having been thrown haphazardly into the Gears universe. Delta could either be out on a scavenging run or if they detected the energy spike from my OC’s arrival, they could be sent out to investigate that anomaly. Since there’s an 18 month gap between the second and third games, I’d like for the thread to start possibly 6-9 months into the gap. I would like for you to write as Baird, as I plan for this to be an OCxCanon ship. We can assign who’ll play other canon characters as well!

*Mass Effect 2 or 3: I created an original elemental race/character to use in the Mass Effect universe. This could take place during the second game and start off as a recruitment mission or start off with with third game after Shepard leaves the Mars archives. For either prompt here, I would like to try and follow Shepard's crew during both games. I'm currently not looking to do anything for Mass Effect: Andromeda at the moment.
*Halo/Horizon: Forbidden West: I've recently started my second playthrough of HFW and would love to try out a crossover thread where my Spartan IV and her AI companion get tossed into Horizon's universe to bump into Aloy on her quest to save the world. My initial idea would be to have my OC run into the Tenakth Sky Clan after disturbing a group of nearby machines with her sudden appearance.
Obviously the Sky Clan don't know what to make of this new arrival. Thinking she may be a Zenith, Kotallo would contact Aloy who would definitely like to speak with this humanoid creature before the Sky Clan tear into her.

Hi, I'm not trying to be too negative here.. long time GFer, and I've been thinking about why I have this disease.. * ~38% of the US population has the celiac genes, yet only 1% get it (or are able to get all the way through the diagnosis). There is an environmental trigger for activation. * This activation isn't well defined, but other virus infections seem to cause it. https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1007181 * I've read a hypothesis that Celiac disease allowed people to survive plagues because their immune system is already alert and can make other infections less deadly. This is known to happen between viruses and is called Viral Interference. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_interference * This increased the celiac genes frequency in the population. To ward off future pandemics. * Without an activation from a virus like common childhood rotavirus, it would remain dormant (presumably). Almost all children get rotavirus, but maybe the severity changes the likelihood of activation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotavirus * Virus transmission is higher in more populated areas. * Higher occurrence of Celiac is in places that eat wheat more like US and Italy (where they have routine checks for celiac in kids and up to 140 Euro grocery vouchers). But also in theory in more densely populated areas with higher virus transmission. (Especially as compared to when these genes were increased when people lived in villages). * There is some increase in Celiacs diagnosis related to greater awareness, but the gene incidence is the same. * So the increase in Celiacs is due to higher populations living in denser centers. Wheat as a staple could also be seen as necessary to feeding a larger population (in fact there is some history for why the Romans chose this grain related to celiac), but mainly it has increased originally as a result of pandemics, and is increasing now as "warning" for future pandemics, as viral transmission increases due to denser populations.

Hi, my name is Colton, live in FL, and I’m visually impaired and autistic. I guess I’m making this just to put my thoughts and emotions out there so I can calm myself down. I go to FSU and major in Commercial Entrepreneurship and work part time at a local Publix and HVAC company for penny’s on the dollar. (Not trying to complain about that, Ik everyone starts out only making $11-$12 an hour these days, although I’ve been working for 3 years now) I’m just disappointed in myself as a person and I’m also very concerned for my future. I was always the odd ball, never really socialized with many people up until the last 2-3 years, I always find people looking at me strange when I talk to them or just ignoring me flat out whether it be in real life or texting/phone calls. My eyesight never really helped me out much either, couldn’t ever really play sports or learn about computers, I have night time restraints on my drivers license, etc, but it’s honestly the least of my worries these days. I suppose if there’s one thing I could be thankful for it’s my family, they always try their best to help me out in any ways the can and have kind of spoiled me in recent years, but they never really could come to understand how my mind works no matter how hard they tried (which I honestly can’t blame them, I can’t even understand myself half of the time). All the friends I had in high school are either gone or don’t really want much to do with me anymore. I was never mean to them or anything, but I guess i was just too awkward and clumsy for them to be associated with anymore. They all just say their too busy whenever I try and talk to them or just never get around to responding. I will say that I’m not exactly an ideal person, I’ve said some crazy things to people I shouldn’t have and made some very irrational decisions in the past, (gambling thousands away in stock options, being way to assertive towards women on dating apps, snorting adderall and focalin to just feel happier while I was at school, cussing profusely at a professor over the phone) so I guess I’m a degenerate in that regard. And now I’m here, a senior in college about to earn a nearly worthless degree, gonna have to live with my parents for another 10 years like a freeloader because even if I worked 80-90 hour a week I still wouldn’t be able to afford rent for a one bedroom infested with roaches and rats in my city. It’s funny because when I was younger I looked so promising when I was younger. I made straight A’s in school up until my junior year in highschool and now I’m lucky to make a 90 in one of my classes in college. I’ve cried so much that I cant even tear up anymore. And idk if I wanna just end it all because it would hurt my family so much. I’m just going insane, I talk to myself alone for over an hour sometimes, I get angry so easily even over the most irritational ordeals, i feel so pathetic, I can’t even control what comes out of my mouth half of the time and I always come to regret it. I’ve thought about leaving college but my parents said they’d kick me out of the house if I did that, but I find it so unproductive and degrees are so much less valuable than they were when my parents were my age. But of course no one will ever think what I have to say is important because I’ve proven in the past to be such a problem. Even though they’re the ones that watch the news all day and make such big deals about the federal government and trans this, and racism that even though it has nothing to do with them and solves nothing and just makes everyone depressed with the world. Idk what the point of living is anymore. I can’t imagine life is much worse than hell. Every time there is even the smallest glimmer of hope, it just immediately gets crushed by reality, and life just continues on. Hello! 29f here, no medical issues, non smoker, slightly overweight. I will start by saying I'm a major hypochondriac. I noticed last night that the bone in the left side of the base of my skull is a bit swollen and tender. This has happened 8 months ago and it went away after 2 or 3 days of ice and anti inflammatory cream. I'm just wondering if this can be serious or not. Not sure if this is caused by ponytail, exercise or poor posture (that I've been trying to correct). Can someone please reassure me? Cheers in advance!

I'm BMI 29 at the minute, used to be BMI 37 but I lost a significant amount of weight (25kg/55lbs) very quickly and very unhealthily. I'm still balls deep in a restrictive eating disorder, but since I'm still well overweight it doesn't concern anyone. I've passed out multiple times and had an unexplained seizure before which I now highly suspect was due to hypoglycemia - I had been fasting for 4 days but couldn't understand how that would cause a seizure as I knew nothing about hypoglycemia.
My problem is I'm having bloods done to retest my iron and haemoglobin since I've been anemic for a long time (before my ED), but they test for a number of things at the same time - one being glucose. I regularly fast for long periods of time and my current one will be 3 days long when I have blood taken.
I'm expecting the results to show I was hypoglycemic when they were done but since I'm overweight and the test is meant to be random and not fasting, I'm worried they'll diagnose me as being prediabetic or diabetic as the 'obvious' conclusion would be I'm insulin resistant. I know for a fact I am not diabetic, even at my heighest weight, as previous blood tests have been consistent in showing my random glucose was well within normal limits.
I'm not a minor or underweight (of course), so no possibility of being forced into treatment if I disclose my disorder to explain low glucose, but I truly doubt they would believe me and that's not something I want to go through.
So question is, if they suspected I was diabetic would I be asked for a follow up appointment? My GP are reckless, don't actually care about my health, and I honestly believe they would mark me as having T2D without any other tests solely because of my weight. And am I even right for assuming they'd think I was insulin resistant? Not very educated on this topic.

As the title suggests I just realized I made such a big mistake and the guilt is eating me. I just balled my eyes out in the backyard while the dogs played. Let me give you the full story.
New client who’s never had a sitter before😭 4 days worth of drop ins, I just finished my last visit. 2 energetic dogs- one bigger and one medium sized.
They are fed two times a day. I did the meet and greet 3 weeks prior and she showed me the food cabinet. I remember her saying big food big dog, smaller food for smaller dog. Easy enough right! She left me a page of instructions that remind me of the cabinet they are in and say they are labeled by name which I completely looked over. 1000000% MY fault.
There are two big bins of the same size at the bottom of the cabinet. One has the big dogs food. I assumed the one next to it was the smaller dogs food. Well no. It is the CATS food(I am not caring for the cat she said he is set up to be self sufficient). I look up and 2 shelves up is a plastic cereal container of the smaller dogs food.
I have never made such a careless mistake. The smaller dog puked one time. I let the owner know and we both cracked it up to be anxiety.
I need to let the owner know. I am expecting and deserving of a harsh review. Imagine coming home and your cats food is sufficiently lower and one of your dogs is barely touched😭 She just thanked me for taking such good care of them💔

I honestly just need someone to listen and not think I’m crazy. I also have other reasons for wanting this written in a form that I’m not able to later change, for reasons that will become apparent.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alex, and I've been an active member of the 3D printing community for years. I've dabbled in various printing projects, from practical prototypes to detailed minifigs. I like to pretend I’ll use them for tabletop gaming, but if I’m honest, I rarely leave the house and don’t really have anyone to play with. Which is fine, I’m happy to be a homebody and have my little hobbies by myself at home. But recently, my 3D printing hobby has taken an… unexpected turn.
It all began a couple of months ago when I embarked on a new project—a 3D printed statue for my sister’s bathroom. Being a fan of Egyptian mythology, she wanted to incorporate an Egyptian theme, and asked if I could print a small egyptian statue for her. It had been a while since I used my printer, so it sounded like a fun project. However, I was having trouble finding a good free print on any of the usual sites, and I didn’t want to have to pay for a file. So I turned to a 3D printing search engine, Yeggi. That’s when I saw the Sebu statue for the first time. The site was in some kind of foreign language I didn’t speak, but the 3D model had an air of mystique yet simplicity that immediately drew me in, and I knew I had to print it. It was definitely egyptian looking, would be a simple print with few supports, and it was free. Perfect.
It had been a while since I used my printer, so I went through the usual process of re-leveling the bed, cleaning out the old filament (apparently the last time I printed I was trying out some flexible filament… no wonder I stopped printing!) and swapping in some bronze metallic filament. Usually I just print in white PLA, then prime and paint, but I wanted to try a nicer-looking plastic since this was a gift, after all. Plus I’m guessing it would eventually get wet, or work its way into my niece’s sandbox, so better a solid color than paint that would get rubbed off. Plus the statue was a really simple one, so a single color would be fine.
I sliced the file, saved it to my SD card, and started up the printer. The layers of filament slowly built up, taking shape as the Sebu statue emerged. It honestly looked amazing, I couldn't wait to see it on display in my sister’s Egyptian-themed bathroom, she was going to be blown away. Looking back, that was probably the last time I felt really, really good about anything to do with the statue. By comparison, everything now seems… cloudy? Probably best I give examples.
First, getting the statue off the print bed was a hassle, which rarely happens with my glass bed. I ended up trying to use a razor blade to separate it without ruining either the print or the bed (it took over 24 hours to print!) and ended up slicing my hand pretty good, which was fairly shallow but did get blood everywhere. Luckily I must have loosened the print at least, because when I went to rinse the blood off of it in the sink, it immediately popped off the bed without any damage.
I still needed to clean up the brim, but felt uneasy about using a razor blade right away (my usual method for trimming my 3D prints). I still had several days before my weekly lunch with my sister, so there was no rush. That’s when my memory started getting kinda uneven. I couldn’t remember where I set the statue down after I put a band-aid on my hand. But not just that one time, it seemed like every time I put it down for a minute, I’d lose track of it. Then finding I’d put it in weird places. You know how you find your keys in the fridge and can’t remember putting them there, but have a vague sense that you must have? Imagine that, but every time you put your keys down you get distracted by the most random thing, then can’t find them. And it just keeps happening
Of course, that happened every time I saw my sister, so I could never give it to her. Finally, I decided to just print my sister another one. But for some reason, the print kept failing. I went back to basics, printing some test prints like Benchy and Moon City. Those came out relatively fine, but no matter how I tried, I could not get the Sebu file to print again. I’d end up with thermistor errors, spaghetti prints, and even once it somehow printed a completely different file (I must have selected the wrong one I guess). I must have been back in the 3D printing mood because it seemed like I had the printer going nonstop for weeks. In some ways I felt like I did when I first got my printer, churning out all kinds of useless things for the fun of it. Looking back though, I don’t remember it being much fun, more just stressful, like I needed to get a certain number of prints done. I went through almost all of my leftover filaments, not just from the new roll but most of my old stuff too. I even managed a flexible filament Benchy!
During this time the Sebu statue continued to be a source of confusion for me. I’d find I had left it on the kitchen counter or perched on a shelf in the living room. Its presence became more and more unnerving. I would find it in my bedroom, sitting on my nightstand as if watching me sleep (obviously I had just forgot that I set it down there before bed), or in the bathroom, staring at me while I brushed my teeth (where I clearly just put it down so I could wash my hands). Its uncanny ability to appear seemingly out of thin air really started creeping me out though. I finally started just carrying it around with me. It couldn’t pop up unexpectedly if it was in my hands, right? I didn’t take it in bed with me or anything of course, that would be weird, Lord Sebu wouldn’t like that. Bedtime was my one escape from the damned thing.
I did start to notice strange incidents happening when I was holding the statue. It started subtly—a flicker of lights, objects slightly shifting position in my periphery. I’d find other 3D prints had moved from the big box I stored them in. However, I chalked it up to my niece playing with them and leaving them laying around.
I first started accepting that something unexplainable was happening when I began finding prints I had no memory of printing. Weird little articulated dolls and strange creatures. It didn’t make any sense, so I started a log of everything I printed. And yes, I checked the batteries in my carbon monoxide detector.
The most distressing incident involved a family heirloom—a precious dreamcatcher that had been passed down through generations. It hung above my bed, one of the only things I had to remember my Grandfather. Just a few days ago, I noticed it was missing from the wall. I found it under the bed, partially destroyed, as if some unseen force had torn through its delicate webbing and knocked it to the ground. Apparently I had also dropped a few prints down there, as they were lying on the dreamcatcher. Lord Sebu was also under the bed, watching. The dreamcatcher was given to me by my grandfather just a few weeks before he passed, when I was very young. I’d been having typical childish nightmares, and my parents were at their wits end as my sister was a newborn at the time and they were already getting very little sleep. It had been hanging on the wall of his living room for probably decades, but he brought it over to give to me. My parents say that ever since the night he brought it over, I never woke them up with nightmares again. It’s been on the wall of my bedroom ever since, even when I was in college. Its destruction left me with an overwhelming sense of loss and vulnerability.
Shortly after that was the bathroom incident. Some pills in my medicine cabinet had switched containers. It may sound insignificant, but it could have had potentially dangerous consequences if I hadn't noticed the mix-up. I’m not even religious, let alone superstitious. But that’s when I couldn’t ignore or rationalize it anymore, and really started taking things seriously. But try telling your GP that you’re worried you’re being… haunted? Luckily my sister is a NP, so I brought it up during our weekly lunch. She insisted it must be a result of stress and not getting enough sleep. That made sense, things didn’t really seem THAT bad until the dreamcatcher broke, and I’ve not slept well since then either. That kind of interruption to routine could easily have an impact on my mental health.
Sleeping pills were a lot easier to swallow (ha!) than beliefs in any kind of supernatural activity. So drugs to the rescue! She also promised to see what she could do about fixing the dreamcatcher for me, she’s pretty crafty (as her extremely well-decorated house will attest). The next day she came over and did a dang good job of mending it, and having it back on my wall plus some melatonin seemed to do the trick, I got a good night’s sleep again!
Things did seem a lot better when I was well-rested. But I was still feeling a little unsettled, and decided to start keeping a journal, especially since I kept misplacing my list of prints. Around that time I also noticed that some of my benchies were printing oddly. Instead of the little ‘3DBenchy’ text on the back, there was just a strange capital D with some lines coming off of it. I tried again, and got the same thing. This time the bottom also had the D, except it was turned on its side with a line coming from it, like a little umbrella with two handles? My best guess is some hacker figured out a virus to print their tag on everything coming out of a 3D printer?
I asked around on 3DPrinting but nobody had ever heard of such a thing. Adding to the growing list of peculiarities, I found myself unable to locate the original source file for the Sebu statue on my computer. It had vanished without a trace.
But the strangeness didn't stop at physical anomalies. I also noticed discrepancies in my handwritten journal, which I’ve been using to document my 3D printing projects, ideas, and experiences. Pages went missing, and others appeared to have been altered or written without my recollection. It was as if someone—or something—was tampering with my thoughts and memories.
The once-solid anchor of my journal is now a source of confusion and doubt. I needed a written record that I had no ability to change or destroy. That’s when I remembered reddit. Even if someone or something changes my reddit posts, there are multiple archive services I could use to go back and determine what the original contents were. So I started posting.
Unfortunately, when I tried to share my experiences on 3DPrinting, my posts were swiftly removed for being off-topic. I understand the mods’ position, but I needed answers and this all had started with 3Dprinting, right? Luckily, one user did manage to reply to one of my posts before it was deleted, and recommended a different subreddit—one that embraces the strange and unexplained: Nosleep. I’d never heard of it, and my first reaction was ‘that sounds like the opposite of what I want’. But it does appear you guys are more accepting of these kinds of posts. Perhaps some of you had encountered similar phenomena? Maybe you have theories or experiences that could shed light on my predicament. At the very least, I can post my experiences here and they won’t be changed. I can’t seem to log in to my old account either, but I think a fresh start with a fresh account is a good idea anyway.
So here I am, reaching out to you, those familiar. I need your help to understand what's happening. Have any of you experienced similar occurrences after printing certain objects? Is there a logical explanation I’m missing? I just want things to go back to normal.

I am starting to help my mom manage her taxable brokerage account and pushing her towards the boglehead approach. She has some existing mutual funds I want to sell, but I'm looking for some guidance here before proceeding.
One of the funds in her account is TWVLX; she holds roughy $100K in it. This makes up half of her brokerage account. Historically, I believe it has done "ok" for her. I would like to sell it and go with a 3 fund portfolio (VTi and VXUS, etc)... but I am wondering if it's the right approach? She's retired, owns home, extremely little expenses.
The main concern is the tax consequences. I'm not quite sure how to interpret what Schwab (her brokerage) shows for that fund. It shows the cost basis is ~$117,000, market value is ~$118,000, and the gain is ~$1,000? How is this calculated? She has had the fund since 1997.
I have to admit, I'm not familiar enough with mutual funds and its distributions to know what's going on. That mutual fund pays dividends quarterly. I"m confused to why Schwab is only show a $1,000 gain?
I'm also confused when I click on the lot details for that fund. Screenshot is attached. You can see the quarterly dividend reinvestments. But why is the Cost/Share column always $8.12, and the Price column always at $7.60?
And if I do sell all the shares, is it all really reported as just a $1,000 capital gain?

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won reelection in a runoff Sunday, following a nail-biter first round two weeks earlier. Having secured another five years, Erdogan now faces a host of domestic challenges in a deeply divided country, from a battered economy to pressure for the repatriation of Syrian refugees to the need to rebuild after a devastating earthquake.
Here’s a look at the challenges ahead.
ECONOMY: HOW MUCH LONGER CAN ERDOGAN’S UNORTHODOX POLICIES BE SUSTAINED?
Inflation in Turkey hit a staggering 85% in October before easing to 44% last month — although independent experts think the latest figure still masks how severe the cost-of-living crisis is in a country where people are having trouble paying skyrocketing rents and buying basic goods.
Critics blame the crisis on Erdogan’s policy of keeping interest rates low to promote growth. Economists generally recommend raising rates to combat inflation.
Despite a faltering economy, Erdogan won the election, in part by softening the effects of inflation with public spending that experts say is unsustainable, including minimum wage and pension increases.
“The Turkish economy has been partying for a long time and well beyond its means. And I think in the period after the election, this is when we are going to pay for the feast that we consumed,” said Selva Demiralp, professor of economics at Istanbul’s Koc University.
Moving forward, the government will need to decide whether to stick to low rates, as Erdogan has promised, make gradual hikes, or combine small increases with other measures. All will be bring an “unavoidable slowdown” in the Turkish economy and higher unemployment rates, according to Demiralp, but the question is whether it’s a controlled slowdown or a sudden stop.
The Turkish lira plunged against the dollar Monday, though stocks rallied.
EARTHQUAKE: ERDOGAN HAS VOWED TO REBUILD — BUT AT WHAT COST?
Erdogan’s overwhelming victory in the provinces hit hardest by the Feb. 6 earthquake that killed some 50,000 people came despite criticism that the government’s response was slow and ineffective.
Voters in nine of the 11 provinces affected by the quake backed the president, including in especially hard-hit Hatay. In his victory speech, Erdogan said rebuilding efforts would be a top priority for his government.
The World Bank estimates that the earthquake caused $34.2 billion in “direct damages” — an amount equivalent to 4% of Turkey’s 2021 gross domestic product. The recovery and reconstruction costs could add up to twice that much, it said.
Erdogan’s two-decades in power have been marked by a huge boom in construction. Despite criticism that the lax enforcement of building codes contributed to the deadliness of the quake, many of his supporters believe he has shown that he can rebuild. But geologists and engineers have warned that a speedy construction campaign could also pose risks.
SYRIANS: ERDOGAN UNDER PRESSURE TO SEND REFUGEES HOME
Erdogan is deeply aware that sentiment has soured on the 3.4 million Syrians who fled violence at home for Turkey, especially as the country grapples with an economic downturn.
In his victory speech, Erdogan said some 600,000 refugees had already voluntarily returned to Syria, where his government is creating so-called “safe zones” in northern areas that it controls. An additional million would follow thanks to a joint resettlement program with Qatar, Erdogan said, without providing details.
But Emma Sinclair-Webb from Human Rights Watch said Syria is still not safe for many refugees — while the polarizing discourse in Turkey is also creating a dangerous situation for them.
RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS: ERDOGAN SIGNALS CRACKDOWN TO CONTINUE
Erdogan’s presidency has been marked by a crackdown on freedom of expression and increasing hostility toward minority groups: Mainstream media is pro-government, internet censorship is widespread, new social media laws could limit expression online, and he has frequently targeted members of the LGBTQ community and ethnic Kurds.
In the aftermath of the 2016 failed coup attempt that Turkey blames on a U.S.-based Muslim cleric, the government used broad terror laws to imprison those with links to the cleric, pro-Kurdish politicians and members of civil society.
Sinclair-Webb, the human rights campaigner, said Erdogan’s victory speech was a “taste of what’s to come” when he targeted the imprisoned pro-Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas, as crowds chanted slogans for capital punishment.
He similarly used another victory speech to stir up anti-LGBTQ sentiment.
Erdogan once called the mistreatment of gay people “inhumane” but now refers to members of LGBTQ community as “deviants.” Since 2015, his government has banned pride parades, as officials have increased the use of discriminatory language while trying to strengthen their conservative base.
Erdogan’s government has also withdrawn Turkey from a landmark European treaty protecting women from domestic violence, bowing to conservative groups that claimed the treaty promoted homosexuality.
Anti-gay rhetoric only escalated during Erdogan’s campaign.
“Mentioning it again at the first opportunity in the balcony speech on victory is a chilling reminder of how he’s really putting LGBT people at great risk,” said Sinclair-Webb, the human rights campaigner.
Turkey’s oldest LGBTQ association, Kaos GL, said that Erdogan’s win would not silence them.
“Even though they promise to shut us down, we came out once and we are not going back in,” the organization and others said in a statement.
