2023.04.08 23:33 cannonfunk [DeepDiscount] Major Blowout Bin re-stock across various websites! Cheapest prices compiled here!

The prices vary from site to site, but the links I've provided here are the cheapest options available for each album. Shipping is free ($25 minimum via DeepDiscount)!
Also, if you're not already using Rakuten when you browse the web, it can save you a good bit of money on all of these sales. Right now they're offering $30 for signing up (when you spend at least $30) using a referral link, plus 3% cash back. It's pretty simple to set up - just use the referral link to sign up, install the web extension, and a popup will appear at check out asking you to activate the $30 bonus. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask! I always put a good bit of work into compiling these lists for /vinyldeals, so it's a great way to tell me "thanks"!
If you see anything I missed, feel free to add it in the comments! I've only included the newer additions to this post, so you may find something leftover from a past sale that grabs you too.
Now on with the show...

Introduction

K-dramas are meant first (or primarily) for Korean viewers and only second for international viewers. Just like in other dramas, the historical, cultural, and political references in “Mr. Queen” are well known to the Korean viewers. On the other hand, we, the international viewers, must dig deep into Wikipedia and other sources (or post questions in forums like this) so that we can understand what’s going on.

For example, some people who have seen “Mr. Queen” said that they couldn’t stand the court politics or the infighting between the different factions because the drama didn’t provide any context. Well, the court politics and the infighting between the different factions happened between the Andong Kim and Poonyang Jo clans, which are well known to Korean viewers and thus, no context was necessary.

When “Saimdang” was first broadcast in 2017, I joined the on-air discussions of the drama in the Soompi Forums. In that forum, whenever I had questions about the drama, I had two go-to persons: for questions about Korean language, culture, and history, I asked “gerrytan8063”; whenever I had questions about Chinese characters used in the drama, I asked “liddi.” I haven’t joined the Soompi discussions after I found reddit, and so I don’t know if “gerrytan8063” and “liddi” are still active there.

Where can we turn to when we, as international viewers, have questions about Korean language, culture, and history as they relate to K-dramas? There’s Quora, of course; “bodashiri” in Tumblr has a form in his website where he/she says, “Ask me anything.” Also, since 2012, the “Annals of the Joseon Dynasty” is being translated in English, with the project supposed to be finished in 2034. Certain portions of the English translation are available online, as you can read in “Globalization of Korean history” from the official Korean government history website.

Oh, maybe we can also use ChatGPT in learning about the historical, cultural, and language issues that we come across in K-dramas.

The very first K-drama that I watched in full was the 2014 blockbuster “My Love From The Star” starring Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun. In this drama, I first heard the term “Joseon Dynasty” and learned how the dynasty heavily influenced what Korea is today.

Before “My Love From The Star” however, I had seen one or two brief scenes from the 2003 blockbuster drama “A Jewel in the Palace” (aka “Dae Jang Geum”) starring Lee Young-ae. Sometime in 2005 or 2006, “A Jewel in the Palace” began sweeping the Philippines. Every night at around 6 o’clock, the streets would become empty, with people shouting to each other as they rush to their homes, “Jang Geum na!” (in English, “It’s Jang Geum time!”). Since that time, “A Jewel in the Palace” has been broadcast in the Philippines five times; that’s how popular it is among Filipinos.

I watched “A Jewel in the Palace” in its entirety only in 2015. Since then, I’ve seen each episode around four or five times already; whenever I feel depressed, I rewatch Ep. 6 where Jang Geum was exiled to the herb garden outside the palace. Needless to say, Lee Young-ae is the love of my life. Next to Lee Young-ae, I love Han Hyo-joo (“Dong Yi”), Han Hye-jin (“Jumong”), Han Ga-in (“The Moon That Embraces The Sun”), Moon Chae-won (“The Princess’s Man”), Park Shin Hye (“The Royal Tailor”), Shin Se-kyung (“Six Flying Dragons”), Park Ha-sun (Queen In-hyun in “Dong Yi”), Nana (“Into The Ring”), and Go Ara (“The Joseon Magician”), in that order.

A. The historical figures who were fictionalized in this drama; lawsuit filed by descendants of a historical figure against “The Princess’s Man” (Soompi); the rivalry between the Andong Kim and Poonyang Jo clans and “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics)

The main characters in “Mr. Queen” are So-yong (Queen Cheorin), played by Shin Hye-sun, and King Cheoljong, played by Kim Jung-hyun. Some of the secondary characters are Queen Sunwon (Grand Queen Dowager) of the Andong Kim clan and Queen Shinjeong (Queen Dowager) of the Poongyang Jo clan.

“Mr. Queen” is fictional, with the following genres: historical, comedy, time travel, and body swap. But its characters and background events are inspired by historical figures and events. For example, the lead character (King Cheoljong) and his background facts — growing up destitute on Ganghwa Island, puppet of the Andong Kim clan, relatives persecuted as Catholics, etc. — are all based on history. Also, the conflict between the Andong Kim clan and Poonyang Jo clan is historical.

King Cheoljong in “Mr. Queen” is a highly fictionalized character that’s different from the historical King Cheoljong. The drama portrays him to be secretly plotting to establish himself as a strong ruler against two warring political factions — the Andong Kim clan (led by Grand Dowager Queen Sunwon) and the Pungyang Jo clan (led by Dowager Queen Sinjeong).

A-1. Historical figures who were fictionalized in “Mr. Queen”:

(1) King Cheoljong

The 25th king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea (25 July 1831 – 16 January 1864), he was a second cousin to the heirless Heonjong of Joseon, as well as a great-great grandson of Yeongjo of Joseon. He was chosen to become King by Senior Dowager Queen Sunwon (King Sunjo’s widow) and the powerful Andong Kim clan because he was illiterate and thus easy to manipulate.
Cheoljong ascended to the throne in 1849 at the age of 19 after King Heonjong died without an heir. As a distant relative of both the recently deceased king as well as a descendant of King Yeongjo, Cheoljong was selected for adoption by the Senior Dowager Queen Sunwon (King Sunjo’s widow) at the time and to allow him to ascend to the throne. The future Cheoljong was found on Ganghwa Island where his family had been in exile since the Catholic Persecution of 1801.
When the envoys (dispatched in order to seek for the future king) arrived on Ganghwa Island, they found the exiled remnants of the royal clan barely surviving in wretched poverty, and in the midst of that degradation, 19-year old Yi Won-beom was proclaimed King. Though from the start of the Joseon Dynasty Korean kings had given top priority to the education of their sons, Cheoljong could not even read a single word on the notice delivering congratulations to him on his elevation to the royal throne.
As part of the Andong Kim’s manipulation of Cheoljong, in 1851, the clan married Cheoljong to Kim Mun-geun’s daughter, known posthumously as Queen Cheor’in.
Cheoljong died at the age of 32 in 16 January 1864 (by suspected foul play by the Andong Kim clan, the same clan which made him king), without any surviving male heirs. Once again, it became necessary to search far back in the Yi lineage to find a candidate for the throne.

The only surviving [cropped] image of King Cheoljong
(2) Queen Cheorin: wife of King Cheoljong, also known as Queen Dowager Myeongsun (27 April 1837 – 12 June 1878).

Queen Cheorin belonged to the Andong Kim clan.

(3) Grand Dowager Queen: Queen Sunwon (8 June 1789 – 21 September 1857), also known as Queen Dowager Myeonggyeong, was the spouse of Sunjo of Joseon. She served as regent of Korea from 1834–1841 and from 1849–1852.

(4) Queen Dowager: Queen Shinjeong, also known as Queen Dowager Hyoyu, (21 January 1809 - 4 June 1890) was the only wife of Crown Prince Hyomyeong of Joseon and mother of King Heonjong of Joseon.

Queen Shinjeong belonged to the Poonyang Jo clan.

A-2. “Mr. Queen” was criticized for distorting history. Among the things that was criticized is the drama’s portrayal of the Queen Dowager (Queen Shinjeong in history) as being heavily involved in shamanism.

From “Descendants of Sin Sook-joo sue The Princess’ Man” (Soompi): “According to the Seoul District Court, 108 descendants of old Sin claimed a damage suit of KRW 3 billion [2.2 million US dollars] against the broadcasting company and the writer for negatively distorting the image of their ancestor Sin Sook-joo from the Chosun era.”

This lawsuit was filed in 2011; I couldn’t find any information about what happened to this lawsuit.

A-3: Andong Kim clan, Poongyang Jo clan, and “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics)

From New World Encyclopedia:

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Andong Kim clan, who had provided the Joseon state with several queens, had seized power almost everywhere in Korea. The social stagnation that resulted was a breeding ground for unrest. Corruption and embezzlement from the treasury and its inevitable exploitation were taken to extreme levels, and reached staggering proportions. One rebellion after another was accompanied by natural disasters.
The only aim of the Andong Kim clan was the preservation of their influence. Their fierce campaign to dominate the royal house had led to a situation in which almost all of the representatives of the royal family fled from Seoul. When the royal family produced intelligent and appropriate candidates for the accession, they were either accused of treason and executed or sent into exile, so when Heonjong died, leaving no son, no acceptable candidate could be found to succeed to the throne.

From “Exactly how much power did the Andong Kim Clan have in the Joseon court? How did they attain such power?” (Quora, by Michael L. Best) :

“How did the Andong Kim clan attain power? By intermarrying with the royal family, enthroning young and easy to control men as king, purging political rivals, and, very likely, killing off any king when they begin to threaten their power.”
“After Queen Jeongsun stepped down [in 1805 as regent of King Sunjo], Queen Sunwon’s father, Kim Jo-soon, began to make his move. Kim Jo-soon, who at that time was already of high rank within the royal court, began to purge all his political rivals to help secure the position of his family and political faction. At the same time corruption in the civil service examination increased, likely in the form of bribes to the Kim clan.”

The term “sedo politics” (royal in-law politics) describes the period 1800 to 1863 when national politics in Joseon was exclusively led by a few powerful royal in-law families, most notably the Andong Kim and Poongyang Jo clans.

From“Collusive Oligopolistic Politics: Sedo and the Political Structure of Early-Nineteenth-Century Choson Korea” by Tae Yeon Eom (2012 thesis, University of British Columbia):

In contemporary Korean historiography, the reign periods of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834), King Hŏnjong (r.1834-1849), and King Ch’ŏlchong (r. 1849-1863) are generally called “The Era of Sedo Politics” in Chosŏn Korea (1392-1910). In contemporary Korean historiography, the political theme of sedo predominated after the death of King Chŏngjo (r. 1776-1800), when national politics was exclusively led by a few powerful royal in-law families, most notably the Andong Kim and P’ungyang Cho clans, for sixty-three years. Obviously, those two major clans enjoyed extensive political authority and high social status in the nineteenth century.

Notes:

(1) Queen Shinjeong was portrayed by Chae Soo-bin in the 2016 hit “Moonlight Drawn By Clouds” aka “Love in The Moonlight." Queen Shinjeong’s husband Crown Prince Hyomyeong (King Munjo) was portrayed by Park Bo-gum.

(2) In Season 2 , Ep. 4 of “Kingdom,” Crown Prince Lee Chang visited in Ganghwa Island his distant relative Prince Noseong, an impoverished member of the royal family. The drama portrays Prince Noseong as a lowly fisherman but who’s a well-read man. This character was probably based on King Cheoljong (1831-1864), the last puppet king of the Andong Kim clan. Unlike the drama, however, in history, King Cheoljong was illiterate, which made it easy for him to be controlled by the Andong Kim clan.

“Kingdom” Season 2, Ep. 4
B. Eps. 8 and 10: References to the persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty

B-1. In Ep. 8, at around the 43:00 mark, Bong-hwan (Queen Cheorin) remembers what he learned in history classes about King Cheoljeong; among other things, he remembers that King Cheoljong’s “grandmother and aunt got killed by getting baptized.”

In Ep. 10, at around the 46:57 mark, the Royal Chef tells Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) that he lives alone because all of his family were killed in 1839. Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) then recalls that he was referring to the “Gihae Persecution.”

B-2. Some of the well-known persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty were the Sinyu Persecution of 1801, the Gihae Persecution of 1839, the Byeongo Persecution of 1846, and the Byeongin Persecution of 1866.

Relevant discussions:

From “A Brief History of the Catholic Church in Korea” (WSJ) : “The Sinyu Persecution - In 1801, more than 300 people were killed as the ruling Joseon Dynasty, under newly ascended King Sunjo, staged a clampdown on the Catholic Church in Korea, ostensibly because the religion clashed with ideals of Neo-Confucianism and threatened the social hierarchical system. Yi Seung-hun was among those executed.”

From “Korean Catholicism marked by volatile history“ (Korean JoongAng Daily) : “Catholic believers suffered numerous rounds of persecution - the Sinhae Persecution (1791), the Sinyu Persecution (1801) and the Byeongin Persecution (1866) to name just a few - with about 10,000 missionaries and believers killed over a century.”

B-3. The only K-drama I’ve watched that depicted the persecution of Catholics during the Joseon Dynasty is “Yi San, A Wind in the Palace.” In Eps. 60-61, the brother of FL Sung Song-yeon and his fellow Catholics were blamed and arrested for an assassination attempt against King Jeongjo.

C. Ep. 8: Korean seesaw (“neolttwigi”)

In the early part of Ep. 8, Queen Cheorin and her attendant play on a “neolttwigi” (Korean seesaw).

2nd photo from National Geographic by W. Robert Moore, circa 1931
From Folkency: “Neolttwigi (lit. jumping on a board) refers to seesawing, a traditional entertainment practiced mainly by women during the Lunar New Year season. A large rectangular board is supported in its middle by a round hay bundle and two players take turns pushing hard on their end of the board with their feet in order to make the other end spring up.”

It is thought that Yangban women developed “neolttwigi” to see over the walls that surrounded their homes, as women in traditional Korea were rarely allowed out of their living compounds, except at night. (Wikipedia, citing Rodney P. Carlisle, Encyclopedia of Play in Today’s Society, Volume 1)

D. Ep. 12: Surit-nal (Dano Festival); ceremonial robes and head gear of Joseon kings

In Ep. 12, King Cheoljong presides over the Royal Banquet during the celebration of the Surit-nal (Dano Festival). His ceremonial robe is called “gujangbok,” while the head gear is called “myeonryugwan” (The Talking Cupboard) .

https://preview.redd.it/kpaoer4z13pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9a1e536f919350963e9de1ecd4fbf2ba20d6cfa
The robe and head gear were worn by the King and the Crown Prince during special events; with the head gear, the more the number of strings, the higher the rank. The jade object that he’s holding is called the “hol” (or “okgyu” depending on the type of jade used to make it.

E. Ep. 14: Ice was a valuable commodity during the Joseon Dynasty.

In Ep. 14, the Grand Queen Dowager tells Queen Cheorin (Bong-hwan) that ice is a valuable commodity in Joseon.

From “Summer on ice: How ice became an essential part of summer life in Korea” (Korea Herald):

During the Joseon era (1392-1910), ice was a national asset under the control of the king, and accordingly, a luxury for noblemen.
Harvested from rivers and ponds in the winter, ice blocks were stored at facilities called “binggo.” They were used for ancestral rituals, for medical purposes and to keep food cool. Seoul districts Seobinggo and Dongbinggo have their origins in the history of ice storage.

From “Keeping food cool, the ancient way” (Korea JoongAng Daily) : “Since the year 505, or the 6th year of King Jijung’s reign, until the arrival of freon and electricity centuries later, Koreans used stone bunkers to store blocks of ice throughout the year. These seokbinggo, literally “stone ice storage,” were located around the country. Local governments sometimes delivered ice to palaces, but mostly used ice as a means to prevent special local products from spoiling on the way to a palace.”

From “Feeling the heat: The luxury of ice” in Joseon (Korea Times) by Robert Neff:

The Korean government maintained two large ice storage facilities at Seobinggo and Dongbingo, where huge slabs of river ice (nearly two meters long and about 12.5 centimeters thick) were covered with straw and preserved throughout the year. Court officials and others who possessed “bingpae” ― an ice ration card ― were regularly able to obtain a certain amount of this valuable commodity (based on their rank) for their own use.
The common people, however, had to either purchase ice on the black market or from ice merchants. The black market ice ― obtained illegally from one of the government ice storage facilities ― was probably considered to be safer but much more difficult to obtain and so most people had to rely on local ice vendors.

Notes:

(1) “The Grand Heist” is a 2012 South Korean historical comedy film about a gang of 11 thieves who try to steal ice blocks from the royal storage, Seobingo, during the last years of the Joseon era.

(2) In Ep. 9 of “A Jewel in the Palace,” crisis hits as Lady Han falls sick and Jang Geum, with Keum Young, is left to prepare the food for the king and his entourage in the royal hunt. When the Head Eunuch tells Jang Geum and Keum Young that the king wants cold noodles, he asks them if they brought ice with them. (When I first saw this scene back in 2015, I thought, “What’s the big deal with ice?”)

(3) In Ep. 2 of “The Tale of Nokdu,” Yul Mu prepares for Dong Joo a dessert for breakfast. The gisaengs around him become awestruck after the package that his bodyguard brought turns out to be a small block of ice.

What Yul Mu prepared for Dong Joo is similar to “patbingsu” (“bingsu).” Bingsu was introduced to Korea during the Japanese colonial period, but according to “Snowy delights and variations on bingsu” (Korea Herald) , shaved ice treats existed even during the Joseon Dynasty.

https://i.redd.it/n78c477zy2pa1.gif
This is a bit off-topic, but notice two things after Yul Mu’s bodyguard finishes chopping the ice into smaller pieces:

(a) Before sheathing his sword into the scabbard, the bodyguard makes a downward slash with his sword and with a quick wrist flick; he did this to get rid of the water that may create rust in his sword. A swordsman also does this after slashing an enemy; blood may also cause the sword to become rusty.
(b) The bodyguard sheaths his sword into the scabbard with the bladed side up. Why? Two reasons. One, if the bladed edge is sheathed with the bladed edge down, gravity will pull the blade down into the scabbard, causing the blade to become dull. Two, it seems that when a sword is sheathed with the blade up, it’s easier to unsheathe the sword and quickly attack an enemy.

(4) In Ep. 7 of Mr. Sunshine, Ae-shin and her servant Haman enjoy “patbingsu” (“bingsu”) in the French bakery.

F. Ep. 14: Donghak (religion, movement, peasant revolution)

In Ep. 14, the ministers threaten King Cheoljeong that if he does not order the execution of Dam Hyang (the little girl who saved Queen Cheorin from being poisoned), they will consider him as a supporter of the “Donghak” religion and its followers.

From Wikipedia:

Donghak (lit. “Eastern Learning”) was an academic movement in Korean Neo-Confucianism founded in 1860 by Choe Je-u. The Donghak movement arose as a reaction to seohak (“Western learning”), and called for a return to the “Way of Heaven.” While Donghak originated as a reform movement and revival of Confucian teachings, it gradually evolved into a religion known today as “Cheondoism” in Korea under the third patriarch.
Choe was alarmed by the intrusion of Christianity (Catholicism), and the Anglo-French occupation of Beijing. He believed that the best way to counter foreign influence in Korea was to introduce democracy, establish human rights and create a paradise on Earth independent of foreign interference.
In 1892 the small groups of the Donghak movement were united into a single Peasant Guerrilla Army or Donghak Peasants’ Army. The peasants worked in the fields during the day, but during the night, they armed themselves and raided government offices and killed rich landlords, traders, and foreigners. They confiscated their victims’ properties for redistribution.
Choe Je-u was executed as a criminal by the government. The movement was continued by Choe Si-Hyeong (1829–1898), who systematized its doctrine. He too was executed.

G. Ep. 16: Difference between “Jo” and “Jong” in the posthumous (temple) names of the Joseon kings; the Joseon kings’ royal portraits and dramas such as “Painter of the Wind” and “Saimdang”

G-1. In Ep. 16, during the Royal Portrait painting session, Queen Cheorin wonders about the difference between between “Jo” and “Jong” in the posthumous (temple) names of the Joseon kings. The subtitles say that “jo” is added to the name of a king who’s honored for doing something great; on the other hand, “jong” is added to the name of a king who’s honored for his virtue. Well, this is just one of two reasons for the difference.

The website “dramasROK” in its in-depth article cites Korean historian Sul Min Suk who gives two reasons for the difference:

(1) Relationship of the king to his predecessor:

“If the successor was the king’s son – or next in line to the throne – then that king was given a posthumous title ending in JONG.
“BUT if the king was not next in line to the throne and started a new line within the Yi dynasty then his posthumous name was JO.”

(2) “The ending JO was given to the founder of the dynasty – Taejo – for great achievements establishing a new dynasty. And then his descendants were supposed to be named JONG. So in a way, the title JO could be considered superior to JONG. And from now on this was the case. JO was seen as a more elite title to JONG. It started with King Seonjo…”

Relevant discussions: Why was King Sejong named "Sejong" instead of "Sejo"? and “Rulers of the Joseon Dynasty and KDrama Interpretations”

G-2. The Joseon kings’ royal portraits and dramas such as “Painter of the Wind” and “Saimdang”

Only seven portraits of five Joseon kings remain today as the others were destroyed during the Korean War (1950-1953). These surviving portraits are those of King Sejong, King Yeongjo, King Jeongjo, King Cheoljong, King Gojong, and King Sunjong. You can view these portraits at the Royal Portrait Museum in Jeonju, Korea.

https://preview.redd.it/0nxhjw1ez2pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51dd5a7e7da44d8ca156664e85c355c1b13dbc6c
For a more detailed depiction of how the Joseon kings’ royal portraits were drawn according to strict standards, you can watch “Painter of the Wind” (2008; Eps. 10-11) and “Saimdang” (2017; Ep. 22).

H. Ep. 16: Secret Royal Investigators during the Joseon Dynasty; secret royal investigators as depicted in “100 Days My Prince” and “Under The Queen's Umbrella”

H-1. In Ep. 16, King Cheoljong sends his trusted man Hong as a secret royal investigator to the most corrupt place in south Joseon. In his confrontation with a nobleman in a gisaeng house, Hong displays his “mapae.”
From “Amhaeng-eosa - secret royal inspector in Joseon Kingdom”:

“They were undercover officials directly appointed by the king and were sent to local provinces to punish corrupt officials and comfort the sufferings of people while traveling incognito. The amhaeng-eosa system was one of the most excellent inspection systems in the world, the likes of which is very unique and hard to find in other countries.”
The “mapae” was the badge of the secret royal inspectors, and the number of horses carved on it indicated the number of horses that they could requisition from the royal stables (“saboksi”) in pursuit of their assignment. The secret royal inspectors also used the “mapae” to summon soldiers.

The book “Corea, The Hermit Kingdom” (1888) by William Elliott Griffis states several interesting things about the secret royal inspectors. They were called “The Messengers on the Dark Path,” and to prevent them from abusing their powers, they were secretly monitored by a “yashi” or “Night Messenger.” Griffis states:

“An E-sa, or commissioner, who is to be sent to a distant province to ascertain the popular feeling, or to report the conduct of certain officers, is also called ‘The Messenger on the Dark Path.’ He receives sealed orders from the king, which he must not open till beyond the city walls. Then, without even going to his own house, he must set out for his destination, the government providing his expenses. He bears the seal of his commission, a silver plate having the figure of a horse engraved on it. In some cases he has the power of life and death in his hands.
“Yet, even the Messenger of the Dark Path is not free from espionage, for after him forthwith follows his ‘double’ the yashi or Night Messenger, who reports on the conduct of the royal inspector and also on the affairs of each province through which he passes. The whereabouts of these emissaries are rarely discoverable by the people, as they travel in strict disguise, and unknown.
“This system corresponds almost exactly to that of the ometsuke (eye-appliers), for many centuries in use in Japan, but abolished by the Mikado’s government at the revolution of 1868. It was by means of these E-sa or spies that many of the Corean Christians of rank were marked for destruction. The system, though abominable in free countries, is yet an excellent medium between the throne and the subject, and serves as a wholesome check on official rapine and cruelty.”

H-2. Secret royal inspectors as depicted in "100 Days My Prince" and "Under the Queen’s Umbrella":

In Ep. 7 of “100 Days My Prince,” a royal secret inspector (“Amhaengeosa”) saves Yul and Hong-shim from the corrupt magistrate and Master Park. Hong-shim previously recognized that the man sleeping in her father’s room was a royal secret inspector because he was holding a “yuchuk” (a brazen ruler that inspectors used for several purposes, including making sure that the measurement system for taxation was correctly followed).

https://preview.redd.it/fp2wmm7kz2pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbb8423675f5ae42963be7a4c1843021afde71bb
In Eps. 8-10 of “Under The Queen's Umbrella, as part of the contest, the Grand Princes and the princes disguise themselves as “secret royal inspectors” (“amhaeng-eosa”) in pursuit of the assignments given by King Lee Ho. In some scenes, you can see the inspectors’ seal (badge) and tool: the “mapae” and the “yuchuk.”

I. Miscellaneous notes: Ep. 11: the fight with fans as weapons; “jangot” or head covering for noblewomen during the Joseon Dynasty ; the beautiful bridge across the pond in Ep. 1 and other episodes

I-1. Ep. 11: During the festival, King Cheoljoeong and Kim Byeong-in fight using fans as requested by the Grand Queen Dowager. While they’re using ordinary fans, there’s actually a martial art system using a fan as a weapon.

https://preview.redd.it/xifgh51b23pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58765eca5345effd9c2f3bbc9d82699a523d54f2
From Wikipedia: Tessenjutsu (Japanese; lit. “iron fan technique”) is the martial art of the Japanese war fan (tessen). It is based on the use of the solid iron fan or the folding iron fan, which usually had eight or ten wood or iron ribs. The use of the war fan in combat is mentioned in early Japanese legends.

In Ep. 11 of “Saimdang,”Lee Gyeom fights off Min Chi-hyung’s men using his fan.

I-2. “Jangot” (alternative spelling ”changot”): similar to the outer jacket of a hanbok but with a collar and a ribbon for tying both sides; according to the principles of the Joseon Dynasty’s Confucianism, women were ordered not to show their face to men, so they would cover their faces in many ways while going out. (Wikipedia)

https://preview.redd.it/r06c2mioz2pa1.jpg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=975e4ba5fdaafc0a05a793fdc61010abc336fdbd
From “Veiling of Korean Women: The Neo-Confucian Influence in Comparison to the Veiling of Muslim Women” by Hye Ok Park (Claremont Graduate University, Department of History) :

Different types of veils
“There were several different types of veils, Sseugae, worn by Korean upper-class women: Nuhwool, a black sheer silk framed veil to cover from head to waist (Figure 3), Jangot, a head and face-covering in the shape of overcoat, usually made of green pure silk with purple collar and chest straps to be tied at the chin (Figure 4), and Sseugae chima or shorter Jangot, worn by the lower-ranking upper-class women (Figure 5).
“Lower-class common women were not subjected, or allowed, to wear any headdresses except for the purpose of protection from weather, hot or cold, in which case they wore a simple square piece of cloth, called cheoneui, folded in half diagonally and tied in the back of the head. It was common that they did not wear anything to cover their heads or faces when they went out on their own or accompanying a noble woman as seen in Figure 1 above.”

I-3. The beautiful bridge and pond shown below are used as the location for several scenes in “Mr. Queen”, starting with Ep. 1. This bridge is located in the Gungnamji Pond (Historic Site No. 135) in Seodong Park; it is Korea’s first artificial pond and was created by King Mu from the Baekje Dynasty. The bridge and pond have been used in other dramas such as “The Flower in Prison,” “The Joseon Gunman,” and “The Tale of Nokdu.”

2023.01.24 00:27 BearanTheDefender Sakamoto Days JAA and JCC Rule Compilation (Directly Mentioned and Implied)

Sakamoto Days JAA and JCC Rule Compilation (Directly Mentioned and Implied)
Weeks ago u/AmadeusVanKleiss asked for the list of rules the JAA had which were mentioned by the characters, mainly Order members.
I've decided to finally upload the list I did when searching for them plus some JCC rules mentioned along the story. To make things better I've decided to sort them in 4 categories (JAA Directly Mentioned, JAA Implied, JCC Directly Mentioned and JCC Implied).
The list is in chronological order and there are 20 of them in total, now let's begin:

1) You can't leave the JAA once you have entered the organization. If you do, the JAA is free to hunt you down. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Of course, if you become a JCC instructor or you're that good as Taro Sakamoto or Satoru Yotsumura you can get away with it.
Page 22, Chapter 1
2) Bounties are officially decided at Assassin's Conferences. However, you can still get hunted down without one of these. Bounties are made for serious business and provoke certain restrictions for those they are aimed at. (JAA Implied)
Page 8, Chapter 6
3) Order members are free to do as they please even skipping certain JAA assignments if they feel like it and if other members are on it. They are on a different level, specialize in preventing killings via killing and do not follow the same rules as normal assassins (their pay must be that good so they don't need to take extra jobs).
However, they must not question orders directly given to them, they're essentially JAA main elite squad and lap dogs. (JAA Implied)
Page 12, Chapter 6
4) Order roster is not publicly revealed causing the group is treated as an urban legend among many assassins. Among those who know their existance, they know the group exist, but they don't know who they are or how many are part of the group at the time.
This is probably done to protect the roster identity and save them from the unnecessary trouble of meddling with amateurs trying to kill them for their position. (JAA Implied)
Page 14, Chapter 6; Page 4, Chapter 9 ; Page 9, Chapter 96
5) Order members are only called for action whenever the order of the assassin industry established by the JAA is in danger. Whenever civilians are in danger they are gathered to act. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Page 10, Chapter 15
6) Assassins are free to hunt themselves down without The Order interfering, but when the damages are too great they are assembled to ease the situation.
This is also seen in the Death Row Prisioners Arc when Hyo mentions that anyone who causes damage on their turf is dead meat (Page 14, Chapter 38,) and when Osaragi declares to Dump that in the name of the Order she must die (Page 3, Chapter 43). This is also related with 5). (JAA Implied)
Page 14, Chapter 14; Page 8, Chapter 15; Page 10, Chapter 31; Page 14, Chapter 38; Page 3, Chapter 43

7) Manufacturing illegal weapons without the JAA consent and using hostages for extortion is prohibited by the JAA. It is punished by execution by Order if you confront the association. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Page 6, Chapter 26
8) Non JAA affiliated individuals are not allowed near buildings belonging to the JAA. They are deemed as intruders and punished by execution. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Page 15, Chapter 50
9) Similar with 8), sharing information belonging to an outsiders is prohibited by the JAA. It surely is deemed as treason and punished by executions if found guilty. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Page 17, Chapter 55
10) The association management is free to change the JAA regulations if it is found needed. This includes but is not excluded to removing bonuses, ignoring certain regulations or admitting loopholes between the existing regulations.
Before this chapter the Order members had yearly bonuses in the JAA regulations but after Slur's attack they most probably lost them due to budget issues. (JAA Directly Mentioned)
Page 2, Chapter 56

11) For some reason the JCC admits actual Order members to serve as Test Admins in the JCC Transfer Test. However after the whole Kanaguri incident it is doubted that they'll ever allow it again. (JCC Directly Mentioned)
Page 18, Chapter 59
12) The test admins from the Transfer Exam may disqualify a appliant if they are found of violating rules established in the exam. (JCC Directly Mentioned)
Page 4, Chapter 67
13) The Order member status can be achieved of you manage to kill a previous member. The assassin would swap places with the previous member and keep their place in the roster. (JAA Implied)
Page 9, Chapter 73
14) JCC regulations establish that anyone with a bounty cannot be admitted into the JCC. It may cause damage to the installations if the bounty hunters manage to get in the JCC. (JCC Directly Mentioned)
Page 2, Chapter 74
15) JCC Cafeteria tests the students skills by sorting their meals accordingly to their shooting techniques. If you're good enough you may get the Steak Lunck, if not you get the JCC Bowl. (JCC Implied)
Page 6, Chapter 76
16) The JAA regulates the assassin market. The association decides who gets to be an assassin, who gets to live or gets to be killed and receives a 30% tax from other assassin's companies. (JAA Implied)
Page 5, Chapter 77
17) Order members does not need to be graduates from an assassion formation center.
Sakamoto, Nagumo and Hyo are from the JCC, Shishiba is a drop out from Kansai, Osaragi is from the country side, Kanaguri is not from any, and Takamura is probably the same old man from Garaku so he isn't from any either. (JAA Implied)
Page 11, Chapter 77
18) Based on what Nagumo says, assassins are categorized in a "Gold, Silver, Bronze" ranking system other than being "Order level and Non-Order level". (JAA Implied)
Page 16, Chapter 77
19) The JCC ,as the JAA in 8), is free to eliminate any intruder invading their space whether this is terrestrial or aerial. (JCC Implied)
Page 17, Chapter 83
20) JAA states that harboring a fugitive, destroying evidence, and neglecting an enemy to end an enemy's life is considered as treason and punishable by death. This regulation was applied to Yotsmura when he was framed after killing Shino. (JAA Directly Mentioned)

안녕하세요. KDRAMA Mod Team입니다.
As we approach the end of 2022 and prepare to welcome 2023, we are kicking off our special year-end discussions and activities! This post will outline upcoming plans and also serve as the first post in our 2022 Year In Review post collection.
Introduction and Background
If you have been with our community for a few years, you might know that we used to hold our very own subreddit KDRAMA Awards around this time of the year. However last year, our subreddit awards -- which has always been an informal and fun activity for our community members -- was caught up in a fraudulent voting controversy. In the aftermath of the controversy, the mod team ended up issuing an official statement and doing an alternate mod-vote-only award as replacement. The controversy took its toll on the mod team and we have decided, after much discussion, that we will not be holding any community-voted awards this year.
In lieu of the awards, we will continue with our Year In Review series of themed discussion posts which we introduced last year along with three new-ish things we want to trial:

Looking Back on 2022 in Kdramaland
We invite all of you to look back upon 2022 with us at the many things that took place in kdramaland and Korea and share your thoughts and reflections on this past year. To get us started, we have curated a list of events and news from this past year. The following list of events and news has been curated with consideration of how the events/news affected kdramaland and our community. While we welcome input from the community in the comments, we do ask that community members do not make the curation of this list into a political or ideological issue. If there are any events or news that you feel should be remembered, please feel free to share in the comments!
THE WORLD entered into 2022 while still grappling with the effects of COVID-19, especially as Omicron surged and swept through the world. For kdramaland, January meant plenty of anticipation for the dramas to come in 2022, especially as various streaming services ramped up their efforts to take a (huge) bite of the kdrama market. When Netflix announced a record setting 25 Korean-language originals for 2022, which was followed by Disney+'s announced lineup of 12 Korean-language originals, it seemed that the "Great War of Streaming Services" had truly started.
Meanwhile, Squid Game was still feeling the effects of its record-breaking popularity and would sweep many award nominations, along with many wins that would keep the drama in the spotlight on the world stage, starting with O Yeong-su winning best TV supporting actor at 79th Golden Globes to become the first South Korean actor ever to secure an acting trophy at the American awards show. In February, Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon took home best male actor and female actor, respectively, in the TV drama category at the 2022 SAG Awards. And then in September, history was made once again when Lee Jung Jae won best actor and Hwang Dong-hyuk won best director at the 74th edition of Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first non-English program ever to win the Emmys.
In February some of us took a break from kdramas to follow the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing where South Korea finished with two gold, five silver and two bronze medals, all of them from short track and long track speed skating. Meanwhile, kdramaland celebrated the news that Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin were getting married and marveled at the CLOY levels of heart-fluttering-ness of their wedding photos in March. Later on in the year, further good news came along as they announced that they were expecting their first child, a boy, whom they welcomed into the world at the end of November.
And something must have been in the air or the water because this year we also saw Park Shin Hye marrying Choi Tae Joon in January featuring a congratulations message from Kim Tan and OST song by Lee Hong Ki followed by the birth of their first child, a boy, in May. And that wasn't the only long-dating couple to wed this year as there was also the marriage of School 2013 co-stars Park Se Young And Kwak Jung Wook, actor Namgoong Min and model Jin Ah Reum, and actress Hwang Bo Ra and Cha Hyun Woo, who is the son of actor Kim Yong Gun and younger brother of Ha Jung Woo. Beloved actress Gong Hyo Jin also got married this year with Kevin Oh after catching the bouquet at Son Ye Jin's wedding. While actress Son Dam Bi married former speed skater Lee Kyou Hyuk in a romantic tale of past lovers reuniting befitting any kdrama. Several other actors also announced their marriages with their non-celebrity partners this year including Lee Jae Yoon, Kim Min Cheol, Lee Hak Joo, as did actress Go Sung Hee and multi-talented goddess Jang Nara.
The baby news was also abundant with actress Sung Yuri giving birth to twin girls, becoming the first member of Fin.K.L to become a mom. Shinhwa’s Eric and actress Na Hye Mi announced that they were expecting their first child, as did actress Jeon Hye Bin and Honey Lee. While actresses Hwang Jung Eum and Park Han Byul welcomed their second child as did actor Lee Pil Mo.
While kdramaland had much to celebrate this year, Korea had much to discuss. In March, Yoon Suk-yeol was elected as South Korea's next president, replacing Moon Jae-in, who signed two (very) controversial prosecution bills into law in May before he left office. These two bills would limit the investigative powers of the prosecution, which has long been accused of abusing its power and authority for political purposes (as seen in kdramas). With the change in president also came a change in the presidential office as Yoon announced that he would move the presidential office from Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House) to Yongsan, perhaps signaling that future kdramas will (soon) need a new symbol of the nation’s presidential authority.
As if in reply to political changes in the country, the entertainment industry welcomed a slew of investment and development related news beginning in March with more news of kdramas being licensed to be streamed and broadcast in China. KT Corp., a major South Korean telecom operator and operator of Korean streaming platform Seezn, announced plans to invest 500 billion won (US$410 million) over the next years to expand its lineup of intellectual property in media content. Whereas SLL (Studio LuluLala) announced it will invest 3 trillion won (US$2.4 billion) in producing TV series and films over the next three years. SLL, formerly JTBC Studios, is the production arm of South Korean cable TV network JTBC and has 15 subsidiary studios including Climax Studio, which produced the hit Netflix original Hellbound, Film Monster, which made the zombie thriller All of Us Are Dead, and Zium Content of the popular drama Itaewon Class.
Meanwhile, the industry wasn't just focused on splitting the current kdrama pie, the companies want to bake a bigger pie by expanding the market, such as the market for queer web series as local streamer WATCHA's Semantic Error became a bonafide hit. Other connected markets also gained attention, such as the rise in sale of script books, which are published screenplays of dramas. Or for major hit dramas like ENA's Extraordinary Attorney Woo, adaptation into webtoon and musical -- all of which highlight the importance of IP rights and ownership, as content creators have learned the hard way. As Astory CEO Lee Sang-baek tells us, based on their experience with Netflix's Kingdom, "IP helps a studio earn sustainable money and keep growing. Without IP, the company has to depend on outsourced deals."
As kdramaland was racking up various achievements, Chungmuro was also doing their thing bagging wins at Cannes and other notable film fests while the domestic box office was dominated by blockbuster sequels as the film industry struggled to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the kpop industry plowed ahead on its world domination while it enjoyed a booming market of new debuts, said temporary adieu to BTS group activities, and welcomed back the goddesses of Girls' Generation (SNSD) on their 15th anniversary as they told all of us that they are Forever 1.
As the warm summer months faded into chilly autumn, Korea faced a change in its legal system as it was announced in October that the government would lower the criminal age limit by 1 year from 14 down to 13 meaning that under the soon-to-be revised laws, 13-year-old middle school first or second grade students, for instance, will be subject to criminal punishment if they commit a crime. Age of criminal liability has been a perennial issue in Korea as serious crimes by under 14-year-olds have repeatedly taken the news spotlight and is a topic frequently explored in kdramas, such as the Netflix series Juvenile Justice, released in March.
The issue of age of criminal liability ties directly into another pressing social issue -- school violence. Back in February 2021, a wave of school violence accusations against athletes signaled the start of a social movement that became known as 'School #MeToo' (학투). The accusations soon reached the entertainment industry, including numerous actors and actresses, which we covered via a series of news megathreads. While some of these accusations have reached a conclusion this year with definitive results, other accusations have faded into silence without any definitive conclusions. The prevalence of school violence is directly reflected in kdramas as many dramas feature this issue year after year. While some dramas focus on depicting school violence as being experienced in the present, in explicit depictions that have drawn criticism, other dramas focus on the trauma that extends into adulthood. Whatever the focus, a notable and praiseworthy trend in recent times is that broadcast and content creators are presenting school violence as inexcusable rather than something excusable or even humorous as in the past.
Heading into the last quarter of the year, pandemic restrictions were eased, signaling the return of more in-person activities. And then tragedy struck as Halloween festivities in Itaewon on Oct. 29 resulted in a deadly crowd crush incident that has resulted in the loss of over 150 lives. While the nation mourned for this devastating loss, especially as most victims were in their 20s and 30s, calls for accountability and better preparedness, such as more CPR training, abound.
In November as kdrama watchers everywhere coped with the numerous broadcast delays due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Red Devils, the supporters' group for the South Korean national soccer football team, took over Gwanghwamun Square to cheer. Sadly, Korea bowed out at round of 16 after a loss to Brazil. Meanwhile, North Korea revealed leader Kim Jong-un's daughter for the first time in photos showing them attending the test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), a somber reminder of the tension between North and South Korea. While the World Cup dominated headlines, kdrama The King's Affection made history as the first Korean drama to win an International Emmy.
In December, kdramaland welcomed its biggest hit this year in terms of domestic viewership ratings as JTBC's Reborn Rich broke the 20% mark. Adapted from a web novel and aired on a novel Friday-to-Sunday schedule, it is a corporate drama featuring a revenge plot by a common man who is reincarnated into a rich family and uses his knowledge of history to his advantage. With its deft incorporation of some iconic tales of chaebol leaders and their sprawling business empires, and the nation’s modern history, the drama has attracted viewers of a wide range of age groups at home and abroad.
With the year drawing to an end, looking back a lot of dramas premiered and events transpired this past year. Kdrama has been shining ever brighter on the world stage and our community has felt its effects as we have grown by over 100k+ users just this past year. Now we can look forward to 2023! Things to anticipate next year include the continued "Great War of Streaming Services", including the anticipated merger of two Korean streaming services TVING and Seezn, even more kdramas as more services and channels get into the kdrama game, and the battle of two Kim Soon Ok dramas tvN's Lady and SBS's Escape of Seven!
We thank you for being with us this past 2022 and hope to see you around in 2023! Early best wishes for the New Year -- may your dramas be great, your duds be few and far in between, and your PPL purchases include Subway ramyeon!

2022.10.16 16:12 Possum_Soul Love letter to engies about how to platform the rocks during escort and not cost everybody the mission in the process.

Hyo! So I just got finished with an escort mission, hazard 4, double exp, two stops, was set to get a clean 28k+ exp.
We start the drill and get to the rock phase. Now this is where the one star silver engie messed things up. Because, yes, you CAN build platforms out from the wall and stack them on top of each other during the rock phase to have them avoid hitting dotty, which is why I would advise taking more platforms in the last tier of the platform gun as opposed to the pheromone upgrade.
This is a very valid strategy. It lets the driller (which I am currently maining) focus on bugs, and gunner and scout can offer single target support if need be. But what you DON'T DO is stand directly underneath the rocks to build the platforms.
Whatever you do, don't stand on top of Doretta during the rock phase!
What I usually do is stand on the bridge I built to dotty and build up from there and if they get too high, jump down to the side and stack them from there. Don't worry about covering the top of dotty up beause she can still be repaired from the side, and the rocks will take you out pretty quickly if you get on top anyway. Don't bother building the plats all the way out before the rock phase starts because the shockwave is going to break them after the first phase anyway, but it's a good way to get a good starting point. Just stand on top before the drill starts, and build out to dotty at about head height, (same strat as for omen platforms). Get on top of the bridge you just built when the rocks start, and start stacking. You don't have to spam them, just keep them stacked up well enough so the rocks don't get through the holes they blow in the platforms.
The rocks are the only stage I ever really worry about during escort. The lasers do almost no damage and there's usually three classes competing to see who can take them out quicker anyway. The rocks are the ones that can end the mission the quickest, and engies have the best tool to get the team through it, so long as you do it properly.
Thanks lads. Rock and Stone.

2022.10.14 01:25 spinnybingle Joseon, the predecessor of modern Korea(s): neo-Confucian orthodoxy and the origin of the hermit kingdom [1392 - 1910] [Part 1]

History of Korea (0) pre-historic influences
History of Korea (1) Gojoseon [around 1000 BC ~ 108 BC]
History of Korea (2) Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla) and Unified Silla [around 100 BC ~ 935]
History of Korea (3) Goryeo, Korea's medieval kingdom [918 - 1392]

** the whole post exceeded the text limit, so I divided it into different parts.

Wow when I started writing this, I didn't expect that this would evolve into this giant monstrously long post. Also, I realize that the whole post reads a bit like "History of the Loss of Vietnam" that was written in 1905. It is said that the book, written by a Vietnamese anti-colonial thinker, negatively assessed the Nguyen dynasty turning to ultra-orthodox conservative Confucianism which led to the failure to modernize.
This post definitely reads a bit like that. Neo-Confucian orthodoxy (I will later explain what it is) led to Joseon Korea's five centuries of isolationism and gradual impoverishment of the nation, which had a violent end in the beginning of the 20th century by annexation to Japan.
This post is comprised of a long introduction on what is neo-Confucianism, and 22 time periods that involve events well-known to the Korean public, which typically involve one or several monarchs.
This post is extremeley long, but I hope one can have an overview of what kind of place Joseon was by just skimming the section titles and emboldend sentences.
At the end of the post, I discuss a bit about how the legacy of neo-Confucianism and Joseon still remains in present-day South Korea and North Korea.

---------

The Goryeo-Joseon transition at the end of the 14th century occurred smoothly without any large battles, as an aftermath of the Mongol dominance and the decline of Mongol Yuan empire. A new "retro" sort of ideology commonly called Neo-Confucianism grew in popularity among the aristocratic class.

History of Korea (4) Joseon, the predecessor of modern Korea(s): neo-Confucian orthodoxy and the origin of the hermit kingdom [1392 - 1910] [Part 1]

0. Neo-Confucianism

Before going through stories, I'd like to discuss how neo-Confucianism transformed the Joseon society, which is still an important substratum in today's modern Korean societies.
What's Confucianism?
(Most rulers are) Mediocre rulers. These mediocre rulers ... need to hold to the [universal] law. If you wait for a Yao or Shun to come, ... it will only be one generation of order in a thousand generations of disorder.
** Interestingly, the civil service exam itself was not the product of the Confucian tradition; it was more of a Legalist idea in the beginning

** Another idea of Confucius was to judge (and thus control) a ruler's behavior by means of history writing. His history book Spring and Autumn Annals provided the style and criteria of evaluating a ruler. The Chinese (and Korean) practices of giving a king a "posthumous temple name" according to their behaviors, and having an office of historiographers who kept the records of state affairs every day, originated from this.

What is neo-Confucianism?
** In both China and Korea, the rise of neo-Confucianism tended to go with the harsher oppression of women
The lord is yang, the retainer is yin; the father is yang, the son is yin; the husband is yang, the wife is yin. The way of yin cannot proceed any where on its own.... Therefore, the retainer depends on his lord to gain merit; the son depends on his father; the wife on her husband, yin on yang, and the Earth on Heaven.... The Three [Fundamental Bonds] of the kingly way can be sought in Heaven
** "Men are the Heaven, women are the Earth" is a Korean proverb that originated from this idea - any modern Korean person has heard of this phrase

Was Confucianism a bad ideology?
Confucianism as a political and state ideology is dead in all modern East Asian societies, as monarchy was abolished and no one considered the ancient agrarian Zhou society as an ideal anymore.
The intention of Confucius and Confucianists was not bad. They idealized the Zhou dynasty because they viewed it as more moral than the pre-existing, more ancient Shang dynasty where bloody extravagance and (allegedly) human sacrifice had been performed. They also thought that governance by "rites and ethics" was more humane than governance by impersonal law and systems.
Confucianists were concerned about peace, stability, and overall welfare of the society. Any serious Confucian politician would try to reform land distribution, store grains to give out to poor people in bad times, and lower the taxes for poor people.

In the face of modernism, many Koreans started viewing neo-Confucianism as something obsolete and oppressive - also, a "wrong" kind of ideology that significantly weakened Joseon in comparison to Japan.
In retrospect, we might think that Confucianism attributed a wrong factor to the peace and stability of the early Zhou society. The Zhou society was stable and peaceful "not because" the people had the right ethics and social norms, but because it was just lucky in its timing and location. Early-Zhou (bronze age) China did not have a lot of external threats. The bronze age civilization was relatively safe and well-protected from the outside world, the same way Egypt was - only under that condition, a purely agrarian society ruled by "divine" rites without military and commercial power could peacefully exist.
Confucianism also had an idealistic view of human beings (at least men) as being innately good or as having a potential to be good. Neo-Confucianists constantly debated about human nature throughout Joseon Korea. This idealistic view, sadly, proved to be incompatible with the advent of the global market economy and the rise of new military powers (Japan, Western powers)
Overall, the intention behind the idea of Confucianism was good, but idealizing a 2,500 years old bronze age society was essentially anachronistic - especially in places like 15th~19th century Joseon. Orthodoxy was a problem in Joseon Korea. Over time, the focus of the Confucian debates in Joseon moved from the substantial welfare of the people to the literal application of obsolete norms, which turned out to be unproductive and oppressive.
** Although Confucianism died as a political ideology, it is still very much alive as a collection of social norms and symbolism in South Korea, and also in North Korea. Even the South Korean flag is based on the ancient Confucian mysticism (based on a divination book mentioned above)
** There is also an interesting overlap between Confucianism and communism. A society of happy farmers with equally distributed and communally owned lands -- doesn't that sound familiar? That was exactly the ideal of Maoism. "The agrarian utopia on Earth" -- to some extent, the Maoist ideal society was essentially an old Confucian ideal without the scholarly class and monarchy.

How did neo-Confucianism transform the Joseon society?
Impact:

Overall, neo-Confucianism as a retro ideology dominated the Joseon society for 500 years, and its legacy still lingers on. Many Koreans believe that this laid the foundation for the social conservatism and patriarchy that's still deep-rooted in South Korea, and isolationism and three generations of patrilineal succession in North Korea.

-------------------
Oh well this was a very long intro, lol. The history of the Joseon is extremely well documented, but many materials are still only available in Korean.
In this series of post, I'll introduce the 500 years of Joseon history at a level that most Koreans are familiar with. The whole post got crazy long so I had divide it, but still this is not that much deep. I divided the history into 5 phases and 22 time periods that involve a major event or monarch. Most Koreans are familiar with the way I described Phase 1~4. I went a lot deeper in the Phase 5 (the last phase before the annexation to Japan), and provide a little bit different interpretation than what most Koreans are familiar with, especially with regards to the role of the last queen Myeongseong.

-----------
The post continues with

I will post later.

In this post we are going to talk about another Japanese trading technique that is quite interesting and at the same time little known in the West, which is usually combined with Heiken Ashi charts . It is called Ichimoku Kinko Hyo charts
This system was created before World War II and its purpose is to be able to determine in a single graph where the price is going and what is the right moment to open or close a position in the market. In Japan it was widely spread in the mid-1960s, despite which until recently it began to be known in Western countries. The creator of Ichimoku Kinko Hyo was a Japanese journalist named Goichi Hosoda.

How to create an Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart

This type of chart is made up of 5 lines based on the midpoint located between the previous lows and highs. These lines are calculated using the following formulas:
Tenkan-Sen: (Conversion Line) – (Highest High + Lowest Low) / 2, calculated over the last 9 periods.
Kijun-Sen: (Baseline) – (Highest High + Lowest Low) / 2, calculated over the last 26 periods.
Chikou Span: (Retarded Distance) – Current price moved back 26 periods. However, it is an optional line which is not normally displayed on the chart.
Senkou Span A: (Forward Distance A) – (Tenkan-Sen + Kijun-Sen) / 2. Draw 26 periods forward.
Senkou Span B : (Forward Distance B) – (Highest High + Lowest Low) / 2. It is calculated over the last 52 periods and is drawn 26 periods forward.
The vertical blue and red stripes are known as Kumo, or cloud in Japanese, and make up the space between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B . These stripes are blue when Span A is greater than Span B and red if Span A is less than Span B.

Interpretation of the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart

Now comes the most important part, how to interpret an Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart? The reality is that these charts work in a similar way to moving average crossovers.
In this way the signals to enter and exit the market are as follows:
  • It is considered as a general rule that the market has an upward trend when the prices are above the Kumo and that the market has a downward trend when the price is below the Kumo.
  • You have a buy signal when the Tenkan Sen crosses the Kijun Sen from the bottom up.
  • You have a sell signal when the Tenkan Sen crosses the Kijun Sen up and down.
  • The strength or weakness of these signals will depend on your position in relation to the Kumo. Thus, if the buy signals are above the Kumo, they should be considered as highly relevant signals in the same way as the sell signals produced below the Kumo.
  • Both the buy and sell signals that occur within the Kumo should be considered as normal signals of medium importance.
  • Finally, the buy signals that occur below the Kumo and the sell signals that occur above it are weak signals that it is best to ignore and wait for better trading conditions.
  • The Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart serves as a means of anticipating resistance and support for which the Kumo is used. In case the price penetrates the Kumo from below, the trader can consider that the Kumo will act as a resistance until it breaks to the upside. On the contrary, if the price breaks from below and penetrates the Kumo the trader can expect it to act as a support until it breaks down.
At this point it is necessary to clarify that the parameters used to calculate the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo lines were devised at a time when the Japanese market sessions lasted 6 days. Because of this, it is advisable to modify these parameters if this trading technique is to be applied for daily charts. The recommended modifications are the following:
  • Where 9 periods is used, it should be changed to 7 or 8 periods.
  • Where 26 periods are indicated, it must be changed to 22 periods.
  • Finally, where 52 periods is used, it must be replaced by 44 periods.
In this way our Ichimoku Kinko Hyo charts will be more up-to-date and can be used with a higher level of confidence in our operations in the market.
