2023.03.29 21:00 Brad1895 VM Disk Speed Is Super Slow

Background: A little while ago, I finally setup lancache on a VM inside TrueNas Core. I have multiple people living off the same internet connection, and we frequently hit data caps installing games.
Specs: 2x Intel Xeon e5-2667 v2 cpus (32 Threads total) 64GB of ECC DDR3 RAM 8x HGST Ultrastar 8TB drives (stripe of mirrored vdevs)
Problem: While I can transfer at full gigabit speeds over SMB to the share, the VM housing lancache peaks at about 40MB/s read/write with the same pool. I did try iperf between my desktop and the VM. That yielded 1gb/s.
I have already swapped to virtIO for the system drive. The VM has 16GB of RAM and 16 cores assigned. It's also running Ubuntu Server 22.04.
I have absolutely no idea why this is happening. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

2023.03.29 20:46 Free-Society7680 Kernel power 41 shutdowns and restarts

My computer is shutting down while gaming or gpu benchmarking. The temperatude of cpu while gaming is normal (around 55 celsius) and the gpu is around 80-85 with some peaks at 90 on benchmarking. The pc is just violent shutting down and restarting without warnings, i see on the event visualizer of windows the KERNEL POWER critical error. My psu is brand new as the entire build (assembled two days ago), its an 850W 80 plus gold. What should i check? Faulty gpu or faulty psu? I have my ram set on XMP1 3600 (stock frequency), no overclocks or undervolting anywhere. Gpu linked with 2 pcie cables (no daisychain). CPU stability test is passed with temperature around 33° celsius. Also today i tried Rams and they are good, memtest found no errors. Also i tried with xmp off but the problem is still there. So Rams are not faulty and they are good i think. I checked the voltages and they seems good on all rails 3v, 5v, 12v (not checked under load honestly). I have installed missing drivers from Intel ME. Yesterday i have played for a game almost 1hr with no problems, game runs smooth i also tried some undervolting/oc and it worked. I played Battlefield 2042 quality all max out with ray tracing turned on to give an high load on the gpu. Everything was good. But then, i started a stress with Superposition and the computer after 1min shutdown immediately. Same after with Heaven Benchmark. So something still working bad .. I checked the wattage of the gpu but they seems good, around 180/190 watt and temperature around 65/70 in junction and 55/57 into the core. I am really going to lose my mind. Tomorrow the corsair Rm850x arrives and I will try that.. maybe the psu even brand new is faulty.

2023.03.29 20:14 jmp242 P16 laptop config - core i7 vs core i9 compared to Xeon prev gen

We have been getting Lenovo P50 through P15gen2 workstation laptops with the Xeon processors to get the nVidia quadro cards. With the P16, Lenovo stopped putting in Xeons and offers core i9 instead. With this, price went up $1k (well, everything is more expensive). However, Lenovo's own doc says https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/faqs/intel/intel-core-i7-vs-core-i9/
i7 is for heavy CAD users. So I'm wondering if I can save some money and spec out an i7. I've reached out to Lenovo to see what they does to the pricing, and if I can slot either CPU in keeping other things the same.
Assuming all else the same, should I stick with the i9 to "match" the Xeons, or would it be reasonable with current tech to drop down to an i7 processor?

2023.03.29 18:24 catchallt3rm the Omen 40L desktop arrived two days ago and there's been problems with the fans

for reference, these are the specs for the HP OMEN 40L GT21-0385xt: intel i7-12700K , GeForce RTX™ 3070
There were a few issues with Microsoft apps in the beginning that got solved after an update (photos wouldn't start). The PCs fans start running while it is on sleep mode for some reason, and I don't know why. They're very loud and obnoxious. They'll run at what seems like full speed for two seconds, stop for a moment, start running again and continue to do so indefinitely. It's weird. It doesn't do this during normal operation, or at least it hasn't done this since yesterday.
When I used the gaming hub to turn on 'performance mode' temps shot up to 70C at once point, despite the fact that I wasn't doing anything resource intensive, no gaming or running benchmarks. I turned it off after a couple of hours. This morning, while on MSi Afterburner, the "mem" column spiked from 405 mhz to 7000 for a fraction of a second. could this be a hardware issue? I thought that I'd accidentally turned on some feature at first. I don't think that's the case.

Is this for £200 a good deal?
Mostly buying it because I like the design over any large performance needs, but would be nice to be able to run things like blender or fusion360 on it/ games on windows. Graphics cards are dual d500, any idea on the performance in the current day?

2023.03.29 16:57 EnvironmentalAd3385 Where are the improvements in PC going to come?

Consumer grade PCs are getting more power hungry by the day. High-end CPUs from intel and AMD have both entered into Threadripper and Xeon territory. With GPUs, even AMD is touching high power levels. I understand Moore’s law been dead, just wondering what marketing teams will cook up for sales.

2023.03.29 16:43 ALANatWork123 Low GPU and CPU Utilization(4080FE & i7 9700K)

Hello,
I have recently upgraded to a 4080FE from a 2070S. I have an i7 9700K for my CPU(yes I understand that this creates a bottleneck). I have not attempted to do a DDU yet. My full system specs are listed below.
When playing at 1440p Extreme settings(no upscaling), I fluctuate anywhere from 80-100fps after landing from the plane. Lowering settings and/or enabling upscaling doesn't raise my FPS whatsoever...and DLSS at quality setting looks like hot garbage. For contrast I was getting the same FPS (at low settings) with my 2070S. Surely I should see a larger increase in FPS with the GPU upgrade?
CPU utilization is about 12% and GPU usage struggles to get over 50%. The card doesn't get over 45°C.
I haven't had time to check other games to see if it is a problem with the card specifically; benchmarks trigger 100% utilization on the card so I don't believe it is a power draw issue.
I'm wondering if I need to shell out the ~$700 for CPU/MOBO/RAM to get the FPS boost I'm looking for, or if there is something obvious that I'm missing here. If the CPU is indeed creating a bottleneck, I didn't expect it to be so drastic, or for the utilization on the CPU being so low.
Any help or suggestions on upgrades would be appreciated. I was thinking about a Ryzen 7 7700x and going to AM5 MOBO and DDR5 if it was absolutely necessary.

2023.03.29 16:09 MaintenancePanda Processor choices

Hey all! Hopefully a simple solution/answer here.
I'm currently running Plex on an Intel NUC with an Intel Core i7-6770HQ which of course, works great for me.
However I have just come into posession of a HP ProDesk 400 G5, which has an i5-9500T TC.
My main thought was power consumption, I assume the HP i5 will draw less power? My second thought was processing power, assuming the i7 would be better I popped them both into CPU Benchmark, to my surpise, the i5 came out at 8212, over 1,000 higher than the i7.
Sorry for the rambling...! I guess my question is this - would you say it's worth migrating my Plex instance over to this HP unit, based on power saved & higher CPU PassMark?

2023.03.29 15:30 Doge-Believer Xeon cheaper option missing in PX-Line

Hi, I have seen some newer processors in Intel and AMD line with flashy new i9-13900 processors and DDR5 ECC RAM. Are they also upgrading PX-Line to newer processors?
At present i can see only the costlier option which doesn't include disk drives. How long does it take to show the cheaper option in PX line, i am excited thinking that they will be releasing newer Xeon processors :)

Price doesn't matter. Both cost the same, as well as the motherboards. Regarding benchmarks, 90% of the time the intel wins. However, the the ryzen is more efficient. I know that AM5 will be supported for longer, but I usually don't upgrade my PC very often (like not for at least 5 years). What CPU should I get? I tend towards intel...

IS there a banchmark for beginner ? A website where you choose your needs and give you the choices ..

2023.03.29 09:49 MrObviousTalks 4090 Laptops seem stupid to me

The concept of a "4090" (really is just a 4080) Laptop is absurd to me. Even assuming the hardware was the same. (its not) all that power in a laptop means that its going to overheat, be loud, and have zero battery life. I can't understand why anyone would want this. I got the Legion 7 from Lenovo. It has a AMD Ryzen™ 9 6900HX (3.30 GHz up to 4.90 GHz) processor and a AMD Radeon™ RX 6850M XT 12GB GDDR6 graphics card. The card actually doesn't have very many benchmarks done on it, but in theory it should be somewhere between a 3080 and 3080 ti in power. It's a little less powerful than its intel counterpart, but it has like more than double the battery life. I can get around 8 hours on a full charge on battery just browsing typing or watching videos. Meanwhile, the intel version has a 3080 ti and gets 4 hours on a good day.
Oh did I mention the intel version is double the price?
I can't imagine how bad the battery life must be on a "4090" laptop. I'm already seeing companies make them and they are charging a humble $5000 dollars. It makes no sense. You probably get like 2 hours of battery life tops. It's not even true 4090 due to size/hardware/heat limitations and in reality its useless as a laptop., it may as well be a paperweight. Sure you can game on the go, for like 5 minutes. (lmao)
I think its stupid that we keep cramming all this powerful technology into laptops when it defeats the entire purpose of a laptop. You need a balance of poweefficiency and good battery life. But let me sum it up.
1) because of flight laws batteries are never made bigger than 99.99 wh, which severely limits battery size. In other words, we have reached the point where you just can't just keep cramming in powerful hardware because these batteries are not allowed to be bigger.
2) AMD is half the price, double the battery, and the power of a 3080+ can basically play any game and even do advanced things like modeling, rendering, etc. simulations etc. anything you could need. You don't even NEED more power.
This whole 4090 laptop thing just seems so stupid to me.
